Saturday, January 12, 1924 ASCOT SPEEDWAY ENTRIES MULTIPLY LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12.—New Ascot speedway, a steeply-banked, ollied macadam course, flanked by the largest seating stands of any speedway in the world, will open on Sunday, Jan. 20, with a program of eight motorcycle and automobile races. Similar programs will be offered each following Sunday and on holidays. A prize list totaling more than $200,000 will be hung up during the season by George R. Bentel, who is sponsoring the newest style of motor race courses. Bentel owned and operated the original Ascot Park speedway, which fell a victim to subdividers three years ago. Many famous pilots of the modern cars of juggernaut will participate in the initial meet. More than 35 entries have already been received. Fifteen of the most daring motorcycle riders will also match their skill and daring with the scythe-wielder. The events will be run under the rules and sanction of the International Motor Contest Ass'n, and points scored at Ascot will count in the national championship table. A dozen prominent eastern and middle-west drivers are already in Los Angeles awaiting the start of the first race. Eddie Pullen, hero of many of the old Ascot speed duels, will act as starter. The course was built by Paul Derkum, noted motorcycle racer of a decade ago. Speed fans declare Derkum has produced a masterpiece of speedway construction. The speedway is situated in the center of a 170-acre tract, the remainder to be used for a fair grounds and amusement park. Ascot is less than three miles from the center of Los Angeles, being located adjoining Lincoln park. AUTO TRADES TO MEET ON JAN. 18 The association's general meeting will take place on Jan. 18. CAMEL IN RECORD RUN TO BIG BEAR Travel to Bear valley is not very heavy these days—the chilly days and cold nights have deterred almost everyone but duck hunters from making the jaunt—yet the valley was never more beautiful. To date, king winter has barely touched the valley, and the folks who have visited Big Bear only during the heat of the summer when the usual mobs trek to the famous lake and the air is heavily dust-laden, would get a thrill if they visited the region now. Gone are the crowds—everything is quiet and peaceful—and the valley seems far more natural. OAKLAND SALES Three Oakland touring cars were sold this week by Harry H.
