Registration of such motor vehicles for the new year will begin Monday, Jan. 14, and will be simultaneous with the opening date of registrations for pleasure cars.

It was stated. This certificate must be presented at any of the branches of the division located at Oakland, San Francisco, Fresno, Los Angeles and San Diego. FOREIGN CARS PLAN
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 12.—A surety bond equal to the market value of the car will be required by the division of motor vehicles on non-resident automobiles before such cars can be registered and 1924 license plates issued.
This was announced today by Will H. Marsh, chief of the division, who stated he had made this requirement as a means of protecting the California public from fraud through the purchase of cars not owned by the seller. Such bond must be signed by at least two men of known responsibility or be executed by a bonding or surety company, Marsh said.
"Many instances have occurred where easterners have driven automobiles to California, which had been stolen or only partly paid for," said Marsh. "These cars would be sold to local people and then later the rightful owner would turn up and demand his property. Some of the eastern states do not keep complete records; therefore, it has often been necessary to turn the car over to the legal owner. The innocent purchaser thereby lost the price he paid."
"A surety bond gives the purchaser protection against such deals and firmly establishes his title and interest."
Marsh said a similar bond would be required from persons applying for a duplicate certificate of ownership. He said he was proceeding on the authority given him under section 37 of the new motor vehicle act, which gives the division the right to demand evidence of ownership before a car can be registered.
Chief Cause of Death So. Calif., Says Auto Club
"Jay-walking" was responsible for more deaths in 1923 in Los Angeles than any other cause accident in the 486 fatalities corded. Motor vehicles are charged with 219 of these deaths, and it is believed that this ratio will be maintained throughout Southern California.
Fatal accidents were 48.6 in 1922. This decrease came while hazard from motor vehicle increased materially.
Among the 32 causes of accident compiled by the safety department of the Auto Club of Calif., jay-walking led with a rate of 52 lives. These are listed crossing the street not at crosswalks. Eleven more met crossing streets carelessly.
Railway crossing deaths show that in a majority of cases coroner's jury fixed the blight upon the drivers of the cars which the fatality occurred competent handling of vehicle cost 27 lives, a heavy decrease from the 73 deaths in 1922 toxication resulted in seven deaths.
While the total figures indicate that safety programs are greatly reducing the number of fatal accidents, it is pointed out that the Auto club that scores of life are still being sacrificed annually through carelessness and other preventable causes.

Harry D. Riley, Anaheim, Fullerton and Orange distributor of Studebaker cars, never has had on hand a better collection of used cars than at present, owing partly to recent large sales.
There isn't a bit of junk in the whole number, says Harry Twitchell, manager.
These cars are all carefully reconditioned, particularly in point of mechanical equipment and are thoroughly dependable. Many of them are Studebakers of recent model.

NORTHERN ROADS HARDLY PASSABLE
With a warning to all motorists who contemplate traveling either north from San Francisco or south from Washington or Oregon that they should be fully advised of road conditions before making an attempt at the trip, P. S. Steenrup, Buttick factory representative on the Pacific coast, is back in San Francisco after a tour of the northern territory.
Steenrup, in spite of heavy travel conditions all the way, reached San Francisco in 26 hours' running time from Seattle. He reported to R. F. Thompson, general manager of the Howard Auto Co., Builek distributors, that snow, mud and boggy fields are blocking travel over the Silkyous, in the Cow Creek canyon, between Ashland, Ore., and Hornbrook. Between Yreka and Weed, Calif., Steenrup says he spent some little time on a boggy detour through a field. The tour, while not long, stuck several motorists who were going through.
The road from Seattle to Portland is now in perfect condition. Steenrup said, quite a difference from travelling through a foot of snow over the mountains with one track, deeply rutted, for automobile travel.
Road authorities of Washington, Oregon and California, as well as the automobile clubs, will keep motorists well informed as to the condition of roads during the coming winter months and Steenrup advises all car owners who are planning a trip through the northern country to keep in touch with the authorities on both sides of the mountain ranges and be fully prepared for any emergency that the road conditions may bring about.
Steenrup drove one of the new 1924 Builek models with 4-wheel brakes, reporting the car as having no trouble on the trip.

REDDING COMPANY WINS STAR TROPHY
Quite a tribute to the sales executive ability to A. W. Cummings, of the Auto Sales Co. of Redding, is contained in the announcement that his company has been awarded the 1923 Star sales trophy from among the competition of dealers throughout six western states.
The award is made on the percentage of population sales basis, and on this rating the Redding Star organization stood far and above the second place winner. The factory announced the competition long ago, and the announcement of the winner was made yesterday. It is chiefly to reward the aggressiveness of the dealer who gets the most business possible from his territory.
Cummings is one of the best-known of dealers in northern California, and his representation of Star in the Redding territory is naturally highly prized by factory sales executives in the Oakland branch factory.
Big Makers Plan 50-100 P. C. Increase Over 1923
That 1924 will be another automobile business year if forecast made by the leader of the motor car manufacturing industry.
Basing their motor vehicle building campaigns for this year on their confidence in the accuracy of this forecast big make, the quantity production group preparing to increase their output from 50 to 100 per cent over of 1923, says a contributor to Plain Dealer.
Wise men high up in fire and trade prophesy not only continue but an increase in business prosperity during next twelve month. It is therefore likely that the Mellon plans for legal reduction in taxation and practical certainty that can will be compelled by virtually unimaginable public opinion to through legislature to this will of itself assure a new even better times for the U.S.
Fear that the presidential election of 1924 will bring the usual quadrennial slowdown in trade is not proving political stage the business bugaboo of former leap year. For this the country is indeed to the world's great maker of motor cars, who eliminated himself as a prestigious candidate—and by his dawnal reduced the danger triangular fight of dubious come to the minimum.
Makers of passenger cars are preparing for such enormous production increases this point to the fact that there now 12,880,000 automobiles listed in the United States that this means that on one of the recognized six age life of a motor car 2,000 new passenger cars will needed this year. This will allow a 1,644,000 balance of the output of passenger cars on to look for gains in 1924.
The gain of 1922 over 1922 50 per cent. With the figure which increases must be low from a percentage stand having grown to such an enormous proportion last year it will be a miracle if the 1923 per cent increase was maintained 1924.
The National Automobile Council of Commerce estimates total motor car production of senger cars and trucks in 1924 have been 4,014,000 as age 2,659,064 in 1922. It will seen that a gain equal to year's increase of 1,354,926 w only mean a 24 per cent gain 1924 over 1923. Accordingly cannot reasonably look for

The National Automobile Co. of Commerce estimates the total motor car production of senger cars and trucks in 1921 have been 4,014,000 as age 2,659,064 in 1922. It will seem that a gain equal to year’s increase of 1,354,936 would mean a 24 per cent gain in 1924 over 1923. Accordingly cannot reasonably look for year’s big percentage gains the repeated very generally this.
Due to more rapid wealth and population than probably be credited to the states of the Union due to the “westward-ho” trend of immigration the three states lying in the Pacific will probably have reckoned in a class by the selves in forecasting motor business prospects for 1924. As far back as 1921 California 192; Oregon 150; and Washington 136 cars in use to each of population, compared with in the entire United States. Then the Pacific coast has gone by leaps and bounds in magnitude as a present, progressing potential motor car market.
California for instance 208,646 new passenger cars the first eleven months of year which was a gain of 56 cents over the correspondent months of 1922.
Whether the complete 1922 ures when compiled will show coveted 250,000 to have been trained or not registrations surely reach a quarter of a million in round figures. It may not evenuate, though it is as though it would that California led the United States new passenger car registration last year, but the Golden State bound to be recognized as America's greatest prospective motor car market for 1924.

Makers Plan 50 to 100 P.C. Increase Over 1923
That 1924 will be another big automobile business year is the occasion made by the leaders of motor car manufacturing industry. Basing their motor vehicle adding campaigns for this year their confidence in the accuracy of this forecast big makers of quantity production group are pouring to increase their output in 50 to 100 per cent over that 1923, says a contributor to the in Dealer.
Wise men high up in finance trade prophesy not only a diminution but an increase of business prosperity during the twelve month. It is their belief that the Mellon plans for radial reduction in taxation and the technical certainty that congress be compelled by virtually unconscious public opinion to put tough legislature to this end of itself assure a new era of better times for the United States.
Year that the presidential campaign of 1924 will bring about unusual quadrennial slow down of trade is not proving at this critical stage the business man's raboo of former leap years.
This the country is largely debated to the world's greatest maker of motor cars, who has dominated himself as a presiden-candidate-and by his withdrawal reduced the danger of a singular fight of dubious out-come to the minimum.
Makers of passenger cars who preparing for such enormous deduction increases this year at to the fact that there are 12,880,000 automobiles registered in the United States and it this means that on the basis the recognized six years aver-life of a motor car 2,000,000 passenger cars will be ded this year. This will leave 644,000 balance of the 1923 out of passenger cars on which book for gains in 1924.
The gain of 1923 over 1922 was per cent. With the figures on such increases must be based on a percentage standpoint grown to such an enorm-proportion last year it would a miracle if the 1922 per cent increase was maintained in 4.
The National Automobile Chamber of Commerce estimates the motor car production of passenger cars and trucks in 1923 to be been 4,014,000 as against 9,064 in 1923. It will be that a gain equal to last year's increase of 1,354,936 would mean a 24 per cent gain in 4 over 1923. Accordingly one not reasonably look for last Harry L. Turton, Anaheim Oakland dealer, shot the contents of a fire extinguisher upon the side of an Oakland 6-54, and allowed the liquid to remain there several minutes.
In commenting on the test, Turton says: "When the strength of the acid had died out, there was not a mark left, much to the amazement of the spectators. A few rubs of the rag, and the last spot of the soda compound also vanished.
The demonstration showed plainly that the new paint job on the Oakland six marks a big step forward in automotive body finishing. In addition to the sulphuric acid which the extinguisher contained, muriatic or hydrocloric acid was also applied without blemishing the finish.
"This new Dugo paint system in which all Oaklands now are finished has several advantages to the buyer of a motor car. It means his car will always have a newness of appearance that in the past lasted but a few months. When he desires to sell his car it will look new, and he will be able to get a better price for it than if it had to have a paint job before it could be sold. He also can take greater pride in its ownership, because it will always look nice and up-to-date, as compared with the other cars on the road."
Bably comes pretty near to being true also of Oregon and Washington; so whatever big gains 1924 has in store for the motor car retail trade will no doubt particularly conspicuous on the Pacific coast.
Supervisor Schumacher to Act at Ranchers' Request
Another Fullerton - Anaheim thorfaire is likely, Supervisor W. M. Schumacher intimated today, following an interview which property owners of Fallerton and Orangethorpe had with him. Schumacher was niked to use his efforts to have the county cut thus Highland-ave from Orangethorpe to Anaheim and have the read made into a first class boulevard. He was assured that they would look after the rights-of-way.
The distance would be approximately three quarters of a mile, as in the case of North Lemon-st and Harvard-ave extensions, and the paving material would undoubtedly be nephthal.
The Highland-ave boulevard would connect with Anaheim at Five Points. There would be of course no rights-of-way necessary in Anaheim, but the local city councell would have to act.
Another improvement which Schumacher will recommend will be the re-paving of Brea boulevard from Brea city limits to the State boulevard, a distance of approximately a mile and one-half.
This paving he hopes to obtain at about the same time as that of the Ball road between the State boulevard and Euclid-ave.
Proceedings for it, and the Ball road will be started within a month, say.
