Schureman of the Knaheim Citrus Fruit Assn has sent the following letter to members: "We are deeply interested in the welfare of the Orange-co Farm Bureau because we have found that its constructive work, both in the state and nation, as well as the county, has been of great and direct benefit to our association. We understand that the Orange-co Farm Bureau expects to start the annual membership drive during January. You are doubtless aware that the Farm Bureau maintains a citrus department which was of material assistance in getting the establishment of the fertilizer and soils laboratory and the county insectary for the biological control of citrus pests. It is among other things of interest to education and we believe merite the support of every grower in the county. Its benefits will increase in direct ration to the support given it. In the past the Farm Bureau has been forced to use about 25% of its time, energy and money to conduct membership drives and in order to assist them in this work, and in the interest of economy and efficiency, it has been suggested that this association honor orders drawn against us for payment of the membership dues each year for an indefinite period, subject to the cancellation of the member who signs. Thus, if a member can be signed for an indefinite period and yet have privilege of withdrawing at the end of any year by written notice it would seem that the cost of securing members would be reduced to a minimum and the energy thus saved given to more constructive work of the bureau. DINNER STORIES An old story down—or up—where the Wabash flows, is the one about the traveler who noticed that a farmer was having trouble with his horse—a horse which would start, go slowly for a short distance and then stop again. Thereupon the farmer would have great difficulty in getting it started. The traveler approached and asked solicitously: "Is your horse sick?" "Not as I knows of." "Is your horse sick?" "No. But he's so danged 'fraid I'll say 'whon' and he won't hear me, that he stops every once in a while to listen." The toll-gate keeper in a certain section of Alabama is an aged darkey. In The Matter of the Estate of A pretty face isn't sufficient equipment for life," says a feminine writer. That's true. Some very pretty girls have very ordinankles. LEGAL NOTICE IN THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE COUNTY OF ORANGE, STATE OF CALIFORNIA. (No. 16193) In the Matter of the Estate of Peter Lehnen, also known as Pierre Lehnen, deceased. Notice for publication of time of proving will, etc. Notice is hereby given that Friday, the 18th day of January, 1924, at 10 o'clock am., of said day, at the courtroom of this court, Dept. No. 2, in the City of Santa Ana, County of Orange, State of California, has been appointed as the time and place for hearing the application of Elizabeth Lehnen, praying that a document now on file in this court, purporting to be the last will and testament of the said deceased, be admitted to probate, that letters of administration with will annexed, be issued thereon to Elizabeth Lehnen, at which time and place all persons interested therein may appear and contest the same. Dated Jan. 4, 1924. J. M. BACKS, County Clerk. WM. P. WEBB, JR. Pub. Jan. 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16. The toll-gate keeper in a certain section of Alabama is an aged darkey. When recently, a farmer of that district sought to pay toll by the offer of a dime, the coin was returned to him by the keeper with this statement: "Scuse me, boss, but I can't take disme. It's bent an' de county's got a strict rule agin our taking mutilated coins." "Indeed?" said the farmer. "Well, let me tell you that you gave me that very bent dime yourself in change yesterday!" "May be, may be," murmured the old darkey, "Dere ain't no rule agin my handin' out mutilated money. It's only agin my takin' it." Now it can be told, declares Judge. The rookies were undergoing tests for mentality. It was the famous test that established the fact that the average American doughboy should never be confused with a college professor. The colonel of the regiment was very enthusiastic over the idea that everyone should take this test. So enthusiastic, in fact, that he insisted that he himself should take the test, as well as all the other officers. This attitude of mind continued until the colonel had reached about half way through the mentality test and then he decided that it was not wise for him to continue it. Don't be too hard on the grouch who greets you with a grunt. He eats too much—such men are harmless. IN THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE COUNTY OF ORANGE, STATE OF CALIFORNIA. Paul V.
