Willys of the Willys-Overland Co., of the production of more than 200,000 cars on Dec. 15 capped the climax of the most remarkable year that Willys-Overland has had—a year replete with sensational success that has returned this organization to its place far in the forefront among the leaders of the motor car industry. Mr. Willys coupled this announcement with the statement that Willys-Overland expects to break every one of its 1923 records in 1924 with a production which at present indicates a probable sale of 300,000 cars. With this figure as a basis, statisticians at the Auto Club of So. Calif. have fured that a large number of the population south of Tehachapi train their sustenance through wide use of motor vehicles. Round numbers, approximate 150,000 persons in this section earn their living in connection with the operation of motor vehicles. This conclusion is reached from the fact that for every four one-fourth motor vehicles in the country, one person is engaged in the industry. The close of the year shows 1,250,000 motor vehicles in use in California. A proximately 60 per cent of them are in the southern part of the state. So of the 300,000 persons in the state whose living depends on the automobile industry, 18,000 will be in Southern California. However, it is pointed out that since cars are not manufactured to any great extent in this station, the average percentage those engaged in the industry would not hold. Local distributor. The problem of entertainment for the afternoon hostess is difficult. Something heavy, something light, something educational, something amusing—a varied program is desired, yet it must not require an effort on the part of any of the guests. Radiola V so easily solves the problem with its ease of operation and its efficiency that the living room with the Radiola V soon becomes the most popular of your "set." At bedtime—that zero hour for the tiny folks—"Just one more bedtime story," Dad," pleads the daughter of the house,"and then I'll go straight to bed!" And the wise old man of 12 years cries. The plan is being adopted in Canada and is spreading thru the New England, Middle Atlantic and Southern States as far as Florida. Two markets now are operated in Sacramento. Meetings in 14 different states are scheduled ending early this year. James E. Appleby, former Anaheimer, is constantly on the road in the interest of the plan. Among the points where markets have been opened recently are Salt Lake City, Utah; Windsor, Ont., Canada; Clinton, Iowa; and Benton Harbor, Mich. L. L. Halle, former manager of the Atlanta Automobile Dealers' Statistical Bureau, has been appointed manager of the southwest zone by Percy Chamberlain Associates, Inc., the territory including Georgia, Alabama and Florida. "Learn the Law Or Pay a Fine" Learn the law or pay a fine. This is the ultimatum handed out by Justice Scott in Los Angeles to 185 traffic offenders. When court convened, each alleged violator of the motor vehicle laws was given a booklet containing the revised rules covering motor traffic and sent into an adjoining room to a traffic school conducted by Ivan Kelso, attorney for the Auto Club of So. Calif. The "pupils" were allowed to depart under suspended sentence upon reciting perfectly sections of the motor vehicle act they were accused of violating. The teacher represented the court. Pupils refusing to attend school and learn their lesson were forced to pay fines. ORDERS PILE UP FOR NEW ESSEX Three days after the first Essex sleeps were unloaded in Los Angeles from the train, over 400 orders were on file, and since that time all counts has been lost. The meeting is open to all mobile dealers in the United States. At least 1000 of them expected to gather at the La Hotel, where the convention will be held January 28 to 31, 1923. At these gatherings it have custom the custom for members James E. Appleby, former Anaheimer, is constantly on the road in the interest of the plan. Maxwell Special Sport, De Luxe Car It would be impossible for the individual to purchase a car in the thousand dollar class and equip it like the Maxwell special sport at a price within several hundred dollars of the sum asked for this model, says Sales Manager Jos. F. Stroka of the Harry Kanoc Motor Co., 126 East Center-st, local distributors. The company received the first of the new models a few days ago. The club sedan is also on the floor. In every instance, and in every phase of performance—in riding comfort, in rugged pulling power, in the snap and liveliness of ready acceleration—the good Maxwell Special Sport will more than bear out the promise of its appearance and its name. Beneath the body is the same sturdy, dependable Maxwell power plant which you have heard of or known with highest favor. You can expect the same low cost of operation, and the same brilliant performance. The special sport simply expresses that brilliance of performance in lifting terms of beauty. Its gray-green sides mark it attractively distinctive. Steel disc wheels of similar coloring, neatly striped, add to that impression. Shimmering nickel trimings give added refinement. Restful over-stuffed upholstery of genuine full grain, gray-green Colonial leather is long-wearing and beautiful; very deep and comfortable. The color of the top is optional—a rubberized material which harmonizes with the body, or the usual black. The foreign situation is about the same, except that the names are getting harder to pronounce—Santa Rosa Republican. ORDERS PILE UP FOR NEW ESSEX Three days after the first Essex sixes were unloaded in Los Angeles from the train over 400 orders were on file, and since that time all counts has been lost. There are no fancy trimmings or untried principles used in the Essex six. It is slightly longer of wheel base, and lower in total height from the ground. This lowering of the lines gives it a snappy, graceful appearance, but does not sacrifice road clearance, because of the use of a new method of body suspension. The power plan is almost a duplicate in miniature of the famous Hudson super-six, under whose patents the Essex six is built. This combination of features of tried and proven designs, from both Hudson and Essex, gives an advantage to the new car that no other make can claim. Both the touring and coach models have been reduced in price, it being the factory's intention to swing into tremendous production during 1924. Costs have been lowered by purchasing materials in larger quantities than ever before, and manufacturing facilities have been enlarged, simplified and improved until the time required to turn out a perfectly-working automobile has been cut to an extent that was thought impossible a few years ago. The coach body has been lengthened, the seat lowered, and 6½ inches more room provided for rear seat passengers, as well as 2 inches more head-room throughout. The "hump" on the rear of the old coach model has been removed, making the new coach appear similar to a sedan. The doors are wider, and less difficulty is encountered in entering the rear compartment. STUDEBAKER SALES Harry D. Riley reports the sale of a light six Studebaker touring to John R. Weaver of Anaheim and of a light six Studebaker coupe to H. W. Gulledge of Orange. The Northern Orange-co distributor also has sold cars to E. P. Franks of Fullerton, P. L. Wade of Orange, S. F. Shoemaker of Anaheim, and O. B. Eller of Orange. Many Pacific coast motor merchants are planning to attend the seventh annual convention of the National Automobile Dealers' Assn which will be held due the Chicago show. The meeting is open to all mobile dealers in the United States. At least 1000 of them expected to gather at the La Hotel, where the convention will be held January 28 to 31, 1925. At these gatherings it have come the custom for members to retail trade to "talk right in meeting" and tell really they think. For instance Gambill, vice president of the association, who has been in automobile business for 18 years is of opinion that a m car delair is entitled to a profit of five per cent upon gross business and believes his operation plan should be with that as a goal. "While it is unfortunate truly," he says, "that the majority of dealers are not aging a net profit of five per cent upon gross volume of business, still it can be done it must be done if dealers are continue to remain in business." "This cannot be effected in dealer in mind only those of new automobiles. But there who is branding his effort become a complete automobile transportation merchant so the needs of all his presenters of new cars as well as attaching to sell to his as yet untouched market, will make that profit." To my mind today a deal be successful must have salable merchandise, second factor, third capacity and fourth capital. I place salable merchandise first because without merchandise to dispose of, a car may have all three other fictions and still not be sufficial. Charpeter is second in portance to salable merchandise and if the dealer has the first qualifications and will work little difficulty for him to the capital needed to conduct business." Special reduced rates of s and one-half have been given by railcads to members of the society. NEW ESSEX HERE IN VOLUME SOON H. R. Grove, Hudson and Essex distributor in Northern Orange-co., reports orders for five of the new Essex six models, and announces that he will be able to make deliveries on any model between the 15th and 20th of this month. The public is enthusiastic over the new Essex, and inpatient to get the cars, says Grove. ASK SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION Calling upon Governor Richardson to summon the legislature into special session to enact emergency legislation covering the patrol of highways by motorcycle officers, a resolution recently adopted by Ventura supervisee. NEW MODELS IN STRONG DEMAND Lack of Cars Again Delays Delivery on Some Makes December, usually a dull month in sales of new cars, proved unexpectedly busy, inquiry of various dealers here shows. Harry D. Riley, with 21 new Studebakers sold, reported the month was the best December of the five in which he has done business in Northern Orange-co. Most of the 21 new cars were big sizes or of the enclosed models. Bill Goodrum of the Anaheim Auto Co. reported the sale of 15 Buicks during the month, an excellent showing in his opinion. SESSION Calling upon Governor Richardson to summon the legislature into special session to enact emergency legislation covering the patrol of highways by motorcycle officers, a resolution recently adopted by Ventura supervisors, is on file with the Orange county supervisors. Declaring that since the patrol system collapsed with the appellate court decisions, holding salary provisions of the Breed act to be invalid, "the lives and property of the traveling public are constantly jeopardized and our improved highways are being rapidly destroyed by fast-moving and overloaded trucks," the resolution was read before the local board meeting this week. The resolution was filed without comment from local board members, who recently took action to reinstate the traffic officers in Orange county as deputy sheriffs, thus providing protection that had been removed by the court decisions on the state motor vehicle act.
