Miscellaneous FRIGID WEATHER IN MIDDLEWEST CHICAGO, Jan. 2.—Temperatures were slowly climbing today after the gusty entrance of winter, hand in hand with the new year. Over the west and northwest from the Rockies to the Great Lakes the snow and ice trimmed season made up for its tardiness and with drops as wide as 70 degrees set marks close to last year's coldest days. Nebraska had even zero this morning, at Lincoln and Kearney, with three inches of snow laid since the cold snap started. This was eight to ten degrees warmer than the last day of the old year. Salt Lake City was ten above, Denver two below. Minnesota saw it ten above, with a slow rise in prospect. In Chicago the mercury had reached 22 today and was still climbing, after receding to 5 below New Year's Day, but one degree above the coldest of the previous winter. During a lecture, Artemas Ward once startled the crowd of listeners by announcing a 15-minute intermission. After contemplating the audience for a few minutes, he relieved their bewilderment by saying: "Meanwhile, in order to pass the time, we will proceed with the lecture." Will your enlarged salary for 1924 mean simply an advanced living standard, or will it mean also an added amount systematically saved? In the final analysis it is not so much what a man earns as what he saves that makes him really contented and happy. He may earn $10,000 a year and if he has saved nothing he will be discontented, while a man who earns only $5,000, if he has systematically saved some portion of that $5,000, has a feeling of security and contentment that can be obtained only with the process of saving. In other words, raising a man's salary does not insure happiness, unless that man saves at least some portion of his increase against future wants. Higher wages, or as might be stated, inflated wages, will never correct inflated living. Sound and wholesome policies of personal economics dictate that increased earnings should mean increased opportunities for saving as well as increased opportunities for spending.
