AIR-COOLED MOTOR TREND IS GROWING
The trend to air-cooled motors these days is nothing short of remarkable, and Ralph Hamlin, So Calif., distributor of Franklin motor cars, attributes the greatly increased demand for the air cooled six in part to the numerous experiments being conducted by other automotive concerns and the U.S. Naval Air Service.
Latest information on Navy experiments has it that all the new plane motors being constructed for test are air-cooled up to the 600 horsepower type, which weighs only 900 pounds, or something like half the weight of a water-cooled motor of the same rating.
A great many of the new series 10 Franklins have been sold to inventors and engineers of national reputation, and Col. L. N. Lewis, of machine gun fame, is an ardent Franklin fan. But just the other day Chas. J. Carr, sub-dealer for Hamlin at Ocean Park, added another famous engineer to the Franklin roster when he delivered a 1924 beige Franklin sedan to Donald W. Douglas, president of the Douglas Aircraft Co. at Santa Monica.
Mr. Douglas designed the Martin bombing plan which recently journeyed from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and winter was been or display at Clover Field. He was formerly chief engineer for the Glenn Martin Co., and the United States Air Service purchased his bombing plane designs. His choice of a Franklin was due not only to the fact that the new motor with the pressure air-cooling system is in harmony with all the latest engineering data, but also because of its comfort over rough roads at
SUES MAKERS OF "COVERED WAGON"
KANSAS CITY, Kan., Dec. 31—Declaring the showing of the film "The Covered Wagon" had resulted in disgrace to her name and raises a question of her parentage. Mrs. Bridger Hahn declared here today she would push her suit for $1,000,000 damages against the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation and the Paramount Pictures Corporation.
Mrs. Eahn, only living child of James Bridger, famous western scout and Indian hunter, filed suit in Wyandotte co., District Court against the two film corporations late yesterday.
In the picture she says her father is depicted as a heavy drinker, squawman and leader in dranken carcouts while historical records show him to have been a man of upright morals, sober and industrious.
NEW SETS HAVE NEW "WRINKLES"
The musical taste of every member of the family can be satisfied with the radiola senior, says Robert Jensen, local distributor, because of the wide range of the machine and consequent variety of programs to pick from.
The regenerative circuit, which greatly multiplies the strength of signals, and the radiotron WD-11, which eliminates heavy expensive storage batteries by functioning on a No. 6 dry cell battery, are two important achievements on this set.
The radiola senior and the radiola senior amplifier have been slashed in price. Two radiotrons go with the set.
Radiola sr. amplifier was developed to so amplify or strengthen after 11 a.m. on day of publication.
20,000 MILES ON PARA-BELLS
Just about two years ago, Mr. A. M. Wright, local real estate man located at 107 So. Clementine purchased from the Reliable Tire Co., a set of Para Bell Tires for a trip which took him up through the State of California, Oregon, and back through the State of Nevada. Plain Desier readers will remember some 18 months ago, upon Mr. Wright's return, that the Reliable Tire Co. announced Mr. Wright's opinion of this wonderful tire as follows: "After the service rendered by this set of Para Bell Tires on this trip, which took him through all kinds of roads from desert to mountains (1500 miles of the latter) their condition at the present time is beyond expectations, and is the tires failed to render another mile of service. I consider that they have lived up to the task for which they were manufactured."
Roy Mendoza of the Reliable Tire Co. now comes forth with the announcement that Mr.Wright came into his shop this week displaying these same two tires mentioned above. They have now covered 20,000 miles, are still going good, and from all indications, will continue to go another few thousand.
This is just another example of the service that can be expected of tires merchandised on the same principles as the Para Bell, with the motto maximum service and let your goods sell themselves. Mendoza says—"Let me mount them and the tires will do the talking."
BALLOON TIRE IS RECOGNIZED
The balloon tire, long considered more or less of a freak, has been officially recognized by the tire manufacturers' division of the Rubber Assn. of America. The executive committee of the division has made detailed recommendations regarding the standard sizes in these tires, after many months of study and debate.
Here are the cross sectional tire diameters, rim diameters and rim widths recommended as standard practice:
Cross s. Dia. Rim Dia. Rim width
4.40 21 3 1-2
5.25 21 1
6.20 21 4 1-2
6.20 21 4 1-2
7.30 20 5.
The first and last figures are used to mark sizes, for example "4.40 for 21x3 1-2 rim."
AJAX TIRE SIXTH IN OUTPUT IN U.S.
The same heavy tread with five plies on the 30 by 2½ cord, exists on the Ajax cord tire on the Brunswick, and the non-kid qualities also are unusual, says Ciyde Williams of Daniels & Williams, distributors.
The Ajax has now, and has had for some time, the sixth largest production in the United States. The company is controlled by the General Motors Corporation.
The Paragon tire is being manufactured for those who do not feel like paying the prices demanded for standard tires.

EUROPE FOLLOWS U. S. PATHFINDING
"The character of the reports coming to us from our representatives in attendance at the Paris and London automobile shows are quite in line with the highly satisfactory domestic situation and they are, from a sales standpoint, distinctly encouraging." E. T. Strong, General Sales Manager of the Buick Motor company is quoted by the Detroit News as declaring.
To learn that there is nothing of mechanical or body design on European products that can be regarded as an essential advance over features that the current Buick processes, emphasizes uneven soundness of our possession in the market.
To learn furthermore, that leading Buick characteristics such as valve in head motor, forced feed lubrication, torque tube drive and four-wheel brakes are duplicated on most of the higher priced cars; it seems to me, striking vindication of the judgment of our engineers.
To be told by our own people—on the ground—that Buick was an outstanding value at both Paris and London—standing practically alone in its price class—not only foreshadows a live export trade, but likewise a continued preference among buyers."

13,000,000 OWNERS DON'T USE POWER
"If the passage of gasoline taxation and other forms of motor vehicle taxation laws is inevitable it isn't about time that the thirteen million car owners insisted that revenue obtained be expended as asked the Chevrolet Review for January.
The Review is apparently proposing that other states adopt laws similar to much of that California has already, for it declares that the aggregate amount of special taxes upon motor vehicles in one year should not be more than is necessary to
"(a) the administration of the State Motor Vehicle Department;
(b) the maintenance of the improved highways of the state;
and that"
"(a) the total amount of justified special taxes should be raised in a manner which most equitably distributes the cost among the various classes of vehicles and the units within each class;
(b) all money raised by such special taxes should be placed in the State Motor Vehicle Maintenance Fund and to secure the best results spent by the state or under state supervision on the improved highways in order of their importance and in accordance with their maintenance needs."
The 13,000,000 owners is the aggregate in the country and they pay annually $200,000,000 in gas taxes and registration fees, says the Review.
Ennis Installs Weidenhoff Bench
George H. Ennis, local automotive expert, has installed in his shop on South Los Angeles street what he declares is the only Weidenhoff test bench in the city. Any kind of electrical equipment can be tested on it and tests are free. The machine operates by chain drive and is the latest thing made.
Generators, coils, ignition systems, batteries, etc.—in fact any electrical equipment whatever on a car—can be tested and put back into proper condition. If necessary. An expert is in charge of the bench.
The Paragon fire is being manufactured for those who do not feel like paying the prices demanded for standard tires.
