FRENCH ELEGANCE IN IOWA CAPITOL
DES MOINES, Dec. 21.—It is a far cry from Des Moines to the ancient castle of Napoleon Bonaparte at Fontainbleau, France; and the Iowa dirt farmer probably thinks he has nothing in common with the elegant land of Richhelen and Louis XVI.
Such, however, is not the case: If the thousands who visit the state house every year and sit cooling their heels in Governor N. E. Kendall's antecedent were not so hurried by the rapid march of these times, they might observe a similar elegance in their surroundings.
There is a large table of redish wood, with curving legs or nately carved in the "grifin" design. The wood might be native cherry or birch, but actually it is the finest imported mahogany.
A tremendous mirror faces the governor's door, with a heavily-carved frame depicting garagie faces, flowers and scrolls. Doors
WINTER COUGHS' AND COLDS
With the changeable weather which we have at this season of the year coughs and colds are very prevalent. Be prepared for them. Have a bottle of FOLEY'S HONEY AND TAR COMPOUND handy, and with the first sign of a cough or cold take a dose and prevent a serious ailment. FOLEY'S HONEY AND TAR COMPOUND has been the standard family cough remedy for over 35 years, bringing prompt relief and when once used you will never be without it. Sold by Heying's Pharmacy.
LET MISS “FIXIT” IRON OUT WRINKLES
DENVER, Dec. 21.—Miss Jacqueline Fox, pretty young Denver woman, wants to be a "friend in need" to all of Denver—at $2 per hour.
Basing her unique business on the well-known adage that "a friend in need is a friend indeed," Miss Fox has decided to become "Miss Fixit," and is prepared, according to her "ad" in a local newspaper, to assume "unpleasant jobs and disagreeable tasks" for her clients—at a stipulated sum.
Following is the ad:
"Doer of unpleasant jobs will undertake to relieve her clients of any disagreeable or tedious tasks, such as letter writing, breaking bad news, delivering unpleasant messages, explaining lapses or excusing mistakes, for the sum of $2 per hour. Terms strictly cash."
And Miss Fox declares the "ad" means just what it says.
and window frames, moldings and other decorations are of the same beautiful workmanship.
Some 40 years ago, the progenitor of the Harbach family here won the contract for this work.
He imported skilled woodworkers and cabinetmakers from Europe, especially for the task.
A great French architect, A. H. Piquenard of Springfield, Ill., who had drawn the plans for the state house, also designed this furniture.
Now all the splendor of the '80s is gone, concealed under a smudge of soot from Des Moines' myriad smokestacks, so that the casual visitor sees nothing but some quaint old furniture.

MOTHER FINED FOR WHIPPING TEACHER
ANNISTON, Ala., Dec. 21 — A hair-pulling wrestling match, favored with a bit of Jack Dempsey punch, occurred in a fashionable residence of this community recently, all because a young school teacher whipped the young son of Mrs. Annie Willimon, owner of the fashionable home.
According to the story, told in court later by Miss Cleo Mills, the young school teacher, she whipped young Willimon because he persisted in fighting the peaceful members of the little school.
A short while after she had administered the rod to the boy the young lady was summoned to the Willimon home by the boy's mother.
"I want to show you how that whip felt to my boy," Mrs. Willimon was quoted as saying when Miss Mills entered her home.
Miss Mills forthwith objected to such brutal treatment from the boy's mother, and a scuffle for possession of the whip ensued.
When the case came up in court Mrs. Willimon was fined $50 and costs on a charge of assaulting Miss Mills.
