WASHINGTON, Dec. 19.—A decision by the senate on the election of a chairman for the powerful interstate commerce committee was postponed this afternoon until the first session in the new year after an hour's heated debate. This action was taken after two futile ballots in which insurgents blocked the election of either regular Republican nominee. WEATHER RIPENS LEMONS ON TREES The dry, rather windy weather has resulted in an unusual proportion of tree-ripe lemons, according to the Yorba Linda Citrus Ass'n., which has advised its growers to irrigate plentifully. The fruit has colored on the tree considerably faster than usual. It is usual to get at least one good rain long before this, according to the association, which is somewhat worried over the situation. REFUSES OLD JOB WASHINGTON, Dec. 19.—Jas. L. Wilmeth, former head of the bureau of engraving and printing, suramarily dismissed several months ago under executive order issued by the late President Harding, today received an offer of reinstatement from Secretary of the Treasury Melon. Wilmeth refused the appointment. WIFE BELIEVES HUSBAND LOYAL LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19—Telegraphing Seattle authorities to delay the inquest until she arrives, Mrs. Winifred Childe, wife of Eugene Childe, whose dead body was reported, found with that of Clara Lein, beautiful young dancer, in a gas-filled room in Seattle, Monday, today was en route to Seattle with unshaken faith in her husband's integrity. "Regardless of what they say of him—the there must be some mistake," said Mrs. Childe. "He was a good husband and a splendid man. He was devoted to me and his profession. I cannot explain this terrible thing, but it cannot be. It isn't true." LAW WILL PROTECT AGAINST BUM MEAT Approved by the meat packing interests of the county as a measure necessary for the protection of the consumer and of the industry itself, a movement to insure pure meats for Orange county, centered in the adoption of a county ordinance requiring inspection. Supervisor Wm. Schumacher of the third district, announced late yesterday that he would probably introduce such an ordinance at the meeting of the board Wednesday, Dec. 26. Fred Gregory, charged with petit larceny, pleaded guilty and was sentenced by Justice Cox to serve 30 days in the county jail. Gregory admitted stealing a motometer from Donald Wilson. CITRUS CULTURE EXPERT DECEASED The "father of quarantine" was lost to California with the death of Frederick Maskew, of Long Beach, it was stated today by County Horticultural Commissioner A. A. Brock. Brock and other horticultural officials, besides a number of Orange county growers, expect to attend the Maskew funeral in Long Beach, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. Maskew died Sunday. He framed the quarantine law of 1912, under which the state still operates, and while connected with the state department of agriculture, assisted R. F. Woglum in working out numerous fumigation methods which are now used, Brock said. START ON GARAGE Work has begun on the proposed $16,000 garage on S. Spadra road, Fullerton, by J. E. AUTO STRIKES GIRL; DRIVER ESCAPES Search was being made by Anaheim police today for a man believed to be a cripple, as the driver of the auto that ran down and injured Florence Alshp, girl living at 1407 N. Fifth st., Santa Ana. The driver speeded away after striking the girl, who was riding a bicycle, without giving aid, police said they were informed. The accident occurred in the 1600 block on W. Fifth st., Santa Ana. License numbers were obtained. DAMAGE TRIAL NEARS CONCLUSION The third day of the trial of Mrs. Irene Kelech's $30,000 damage suit against the Orange County Rock and Gravel Co. and Lee Eckhart, was expected to conclude the case today in Superior Judge R. Y. Williams' court. Eckhart's testimony was directed toward the object of fixing responsibility on Kelech. 3 DIE IN CRASH CHICAGO, Dec. 19.—A woman and two girls were hurt fatally and another girl sustained injuries which are expected to be fatal at Barrington, Ill., today, when the auto in which they were riding was struck by a passenger train.
