WILL TEACH PETROLEUM COURSE LARAMIE, Dec. 17. — University of Wyoming is to be the seat of a petroleum research laboratory to be established by the federal government, it was announced here, and the university plans to establish a department of petroleum engineering in its curriculum. Wyoming will be the third university in the United States to offer a course in petroleum engineering. Announcement of the new course was made by President A. G. Crane of Wyoming University, following confirmation of the government's intention by E. C. Finney, assistant secretary of the Interior, and H. Foster Bain, director of the federal bureau of raines. Discussing the announcement, Dr. Crane said the government planned to open the petroleum bureau here early next spring. Establishment of the research laboratory here will fit in with the aim of the university for its new department of petroleum engineering, and will further the study of petroleum conditions in the Rocky Mountain region. ATLANTA TO HAVE FIGHT COMMISSION ATLANTA, Dec. 17. — Boxing as a profession, received a tremendous boost in the South recently when Atlanta, long a Southern center for boxers, created a boxing commission. The ordinance creating the commission provides that it be composed of five men to be appointed by the mayor, and subject to removal at his pleasure. The commission will collect 5 per cent of the receipts at all matches to be put in a general fund for its own maintenance. The commission will issue licenses to boxers, managers, seconds, and will determine under what conditions, as to weight, number of rounds, and other details, a match may be held. It was generally thought here that such a commission will place boxing on a much higher plane in this section, eliminating boxing sharks and promoters who therefore have victimized Atlanta fans, thereby decreasing their interest in the profession to the extent that a $1200 house is considered "top" here. "Women of Egypt have awakened to their disadvantages since the World War, and they are progressing rapidly. Groups of the most intelligent are organizing to obtain their rights." So says Mrs. T. J. Striebel ARIZONA WILL TRY NEW STAGE TAX PHOENIX, Dec. 17.—The experiment of compelling stage lines and trucks using the public highways to pay a special tax, to be applied to their upkeep, is about to be undertaken by the Arizona corporation commission. Under a law passed by the last legislature, the commission is authorized to collect a tax of one-half mill on each passenger capacity unit per mile, and of two mills on each ton capacity unit per mile of motor trucks. Though hampered by lack of an appropriation to carry out the provisions, the commission will start at once on the collection of the special tax, it is announced. City bus lines, as well as taxi and auto transfer concerns, are affected equally with interurban lines. 'SAT ON' MOTORIST REFUSES MORE AID "It used to be road etiquette," complained the motorist, "to stop when you saw a car drawn up at the side of the road to ask if they needed assistance." "Well, what's wrong with the system now?" asked his friend. "If you'd been with me last night you'd found out what was wrong. Driving along, I saw a big car standing at the roadside with a lone occupant—a young woman. I drew up to ask if I might perhaps send her some gas or assist her. I assure you I was polite, with none of the masher attitude. The answer she gave me has discouraged me. I'll never stop to ask another motor in disdistress 'if I may give it assistance." "What did she say?" asked the friend. "'You're the third man that's stopped to ask me what I want,' she snapped. 'It's too bad if a person in a free country can't park a car beside the road and sit there without being molested by every passerby.' "Probably the girl had a date with some swain in the spot, and he hadn't turned up. She took out her peeve at him on all of us well-intentioned drivers." PANTOMIME by J. H. Striebel BELIEVE 16 MEN LOST ON STEAMER NORFOLK, Dec. 17.—At least 16 men perished in the sinking of the Norwegian steamer Runa, off Fryinx Pan Shoals, on the treacherous North Carolina coast, Saturday, according to the belief expressed today at coast guard headquarters here. Five survivors picked up in a lifeboat by the tanker W. W. Hills are already on their way to Cabine, Texas. M.Eugene Durfee ARCHITECT BENDED MILD AROUSES ANXIETY RED BLUFF, Dec. 17. — Impending extinction of plant and animal life in the Mt. Lassen region, due to the proposed plan to utilize the waters of Eagle Lake for irrigation and cutting down thousands of acres of yellow pine by lumbering concerns, has prompted the directors of the University of California Museum of Vertebrate Zoology to send out an expedition to secure specimens of the antelope, sage hen and other indigenous fauna before it is too late. According to Dr. Grinnell, director of the museum, when the forests are cut down and the lake drained, sheep will roam the land for grazing purposes. Before she sheep, antelope and sage hens disappear. The sheep trample on the nests of the sage hens and deprive the antelope of their grazing land. This territory remained as it was when discovered, in 1850, until recently. The change brought about, however, by commercial exploitation, has already seriously affected both animal and plant life.
