Miscellaneous TINY CHAPEL-BOAT SAVES SEINE TARS PARIS, Dec. 14.—"The Star of the Morning" is the little chapel boat which lies in the Seine river just over the paraper of St. Michel, not many yards away from Notre Dame. It is a long, imposing-looking black barge with only a little campanile surmounted by a golden cross to suggest what it really is. Passers-by lean over the picturesque bridge and wonder what is this queer little boat. The cross is very small. Many are the Parisians who have heard of Monseligneur Platau who, during ten years, has been working for all who wander up and down the river in boats of every kind, as well as the children of the sailors. Here he holds mass for them and gives valuable advice and lessons to all who desire them. Inside, the chapel is sombre and dark with green plants for the background of the little altar with a tabernacle of finely-carved wood. Nearby is a little votive offering in the shape of a boat constructed by a friendly sailor. The bell in the campanile is thought to possess historical in crest, for on it one reads, "Kid brand, smelter of the Emperor, 1566," and above this inscription are the arms of Napoleon III. Discovered in an attic at Armentieres in 1912, the bell was confided to a proprietor of Dinant, where it was conserved in a cellar during the war and later hidden in the gardens of a convent during the occupation of the Germans. Now it calls the sailors to mass in the chapel on the Seine at sunrise or sundown. HUNTING WOLVES IN COLORADO DENVER, Dec. 14.—The cleverness and cunning of the wolf MOONSHINE VS. HONEYMOONING SIOU XCITY, Dec. 14.—It does not pay to mix moonshine with honeymoon, Mr. and Mrs. Ove Cates decided 18 hours after they had faced the preacher. Mr. and Mrs. Cates became man and wife just 12 hours before an automobile accident between Sioux Falls, S. D., and Sioux City, Iowa. Six hours later they were each serving 60-day sentences in the county jail here and will be forced to pay $100 fines each. Police say they admitted operating a moonshine still. Mrs. Cates is 30 and the groom 42. They narrowly escaped death in the accident, which was responsible for their being jailed. CLOTHES WRINGER AIDS DRY FORCE KANSAS CITY, Dec. 14.—ployment of the ordinary cloth wringer—and not in jest—to local prohibition authorities "drying up" the city today being seriously considered by A. Vassar, chief of police. The proposed method of tracting rum was suggested by Joseph Downs and William Mullen, detectives, after they completed the tiresome process wringing by hand nearly plits of "corn" whisky from woolen blanket. When the detectives went to the home of Mrs. Mary Keirn search for alcoholie beverages they peeked through a window and saw the woman empty contents of a gallon coffee pot the blanket. Chemists, who tested the reagent of the wringing process for a hol, after Mrs. Keirn denied liquor contained alcohol, deemed a high percentage of "kwas present, and that if the woman were telling the truth, then the blanket must have belonged to a mule. The cleverness and cunning of the wolf was revealed to International News Service by Stanley P. Young, chief of the predatory animal control bureau of the U.S. Biological Survey, who was moved to reminiscence by the receipt at headquarters here of the skull of the famous Custer wolf, which was trailed for months before being finally captured. Custer wolf was the direct cause of the destruction of livestock to the value of $25,000, according to government hunters. The U.S. government, through the predatory animal control bureau, maintains a corps of trained hunters in the Colorado Rockies to trail the outlaws of the range. These men, schooled in wolf lore, constantly combat the killers with rifle, trap and poison bait. GROWS GIANT PUMPKINS CHAUNCEY, O., Dec. 14. At a corn and pumpkin show, R. L. Gardner displayed 870 pounds of pumpkin which he grew upon a single vine. One of the big globes weighed 110 lbs. The next largest tipped the scales at 104 lbs. Whatever weather, the smart Parisienne sisters that the tailleur is the most suitable garment for morning street wear. And in spite of nouncements to the courtrary, tailor-made costume has become so important that the great tile manufacturers of France create fabrics designed especially for it, embodying the character, texture and surface more favorable to this type of garment. There is kasha from the last house of Rodler, without doing one of the smartest fabrics of season, which is replacing good old standby serge. It one great advantage over this sue in the fact that it does grow shiny with wear. Then there is marokkali which comes in both bordered and plain materials. Velour de Smyrna is another tissue which is not used for afternoon costumes. Has a soft, velvety surface, with the sturdy quality of wool, which is its composition. Redfern uses it for a smart costume in the dark green shade called "verret." In enumerating the large pressing concerns of the country should not overlook the street companies.—Nashville Banner. KITCHEN BOUQUET FIERCE WOLVES INVADE PORTUGAL LISBON, Dec. 14.—Attacks by wolves are becoming frequent in northern Portugal, and the inhabitants of many villages and hamlets are becoming terror-stricken as a result. Although it is early in the winter for such occurrences, the facts that much snow has fallen and the weather has been very cold are believed responsible for their fierce depredations. A woman at Celia was hooing in a field near her home when a large she-wolf attacked her. She endeavored to beat off the animal with her hoe, and a desperate fight followed. Neighbors came to her assistance and killed the animal. Farmers in fields adjoining the woods report similar experiences. ENFORCE DRY LAW IN AFGHANISTAN BOMDAY, Dec. 7.—The rigorous manner in which the recently passed prohibition laws are enforced in Afghanistan is typified by the punishment meted out at Kabul to a soldier who got intoxicated. He was sentenced to 80 lashes, fined $350, and paraded through the streets of the city as a warning to others. There is a growing belief that the Statue of Liberty was erected to mark the western boundary of freedom—Youngstown (O.) Vindicator.
