CARLTON CLUB
YIELDS TO GUESTS
LONDON, Dec. 12.—In olden days a club in England was a place into which the female of the species could not pursue the male. But them days are gone forever," and the last stronghold of the harassed Englishman is yielding to the onslaughts of modern femininity.
Not a few of the older generation of English clubmen are viewing with alarm the latest innovation of the Carlton club. This club for years has been the cut-shining example of the refuge where men could be alone, and women could not molest them. No women—and, in fact, no guest of any sort—ever was allowed across its threshold.
Now, however, the Carlton club has so far succumbed to the march of progress that guests and women are to be admitted within its portals. The admission, it is true, is qualified to the extent that the club will maintain the sanctity of its original quarters, but will build and equip an "annex," where members may receive and entertain their friends of both sexes.
And staid Englishmen of the old school are beginning to shake their heads and wonder where the "petitcoat invasion" of ancient British institutions will end.

ELY, Nev., Dec. 12—Deep in the Lechman Caves, before the "Bride Altar," a natural shine in the subterranean passages of the national monument in the sides of Mount Wheeler, Miss Agnes Miller, of Baker, Nev., recently became the bridge of R. S. Wright, an Idaho native.
CO-ED WINS CUP FOR PHYSIQUE
BOSTON, Dec. 12.—Miss Mabel L. Phil of New Britain, Conn., of the class of '24, has been awarded the Sarah streeter cup, which each year goes to the "member of the senior class, who is found at the time of her final physical examination to be in the best physical condition."
Miss Phil is five feet in height, weighs 130 pounds, and is well poised and trim in figure. Miss Phil has subburn hair, dark brown eyes and fair complexion. Her father came to America from Sweden. She has played on the hockey team, and also the volleyball team while at the college.
MODERN BRIDE EARNS OWN DOWNY
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Dec. 12.—The dowry is coming back in Illinois, but papa doesn't pay it. The modern bride earns her own dowry money.
This strange condition is being by several factors which have arisen along with $100 apartments and $400 fur coats.
The marriageable young man has come to realize that the dowry is a very useful institution, and not some funny idea of Frenchmen. With daughters that must be kept as fathers have kept them, and with salaries that are dismayed by the task, the young men have to look for help from some other quarter.
Father, who set the pace, ought to come through and help son-in-law whiz past the starting point at daughter's accustomed speed. But by the time the average Illinois father has gotten his daughter ready to give away at the altar he has nothing else left to give. It is up to the daughte.
MONEY CHEAP IN LIL' OLE NEW YAWK
NEW YORK, Dec. 12.—Have you a gold brick to sell? Bring it to New York.
"German marks—one million for a dime!" The hawker sends up his cry all day along Park Row.
"I print 'em myself—just a plain piece of paper," the peddler confesses. "Profit? Sure; 100 per cent. Sales? Plenty. Earnings? Anywhere from $10 to $15 a day."
"Sweet-singing canaries—just over from the Canary Islands. Cheap—$3 each."
Up in the Bronx—that forest of apartment dwellings, where 2000 folk pack into every city block—hundreds have bought these gleaming yellow "Dickles." And with the first bath for the bird discovery—they are English sparrows.
You meet him slinking in the shadows of a doorway, any place from city hall to Columbus Circle. In manner and appearance he is just what he tells you—a truck driver.
The bulge beneath his coat, you discover, is a fur neckpiece.
"Now never mind where I got it—see! It's the real thing—worth $250. I don't mind tellin' you, if you can keep your trap shut about it, that I drive a truck—see! Truck drivers haul furs lots of times—see!"
You pay $50 if you're awfully foolish—$15 if you bargain.
The wife later informs you the same rabbit-skin piece is selling at department stores for $3.

PERFORM WEDDING AT CAVE ALTAR
ELY, Nev., Dec. 12—Deep in the Lehman Caves, before the "Brideal Altar," a natural shine in the subterranean passages of the national monument in the sides of Mount Wheeler, Miss Agnes Miller, of Baker, Nev., recently became the bride of R. S. Wright, an Idaho man.
Charles and lights glistened among the huge stallacities and stalagmites of the cave while the wedding march boomed through the hollow limestone tubes which form a natural pipe organ.
This was the first wedding ceremony to be performed in the recently created national monument.
STOREROOM YIELDS RARE BUST
ROME, Dec. 12—A head in Parian marble, believed to have formed part of the decorations of the Parthenon at Athens, and declared to be the only relic of the famous temple in Italy, has been discovered among a heap of lumber in one of the Vatican store rooms.
The find was made by Professor Amelung, who recently obtained permission to explore the old Vatican storerooms for the first time for centuries.

CUPID CLAIMS AGED INMATES
ALTOONA, Pa., Dec. 12—The little god of the bow and arrow on a recent raid here invaded the confines of the Morrison's Cove Home for the Aged and attacked two of the inmates. One is aged 73, the other 70.
J. C. McClellan and Mrs. Catherine Bloom slipped quietly from the institution and visited the most popular nearby Gretna Green, Cumberland, Md. They have started a home of their own.
