THROW OFF OF JUDGE LANDIS
By DAVIS J. WALSH
I. N. S. Sports Editor
CHICAGO, Dec. 8.—Having arrived at the conclusion that the imperial arm of Judge Landis has reached sufficient length and maneuverability, it is said that President Johnson and Heydler of the American and National Leagues, respectively, will stand here to need in an attempt to throw off the hood of the figurehead at the baseball meeting here next week.
The judge, it is said, wishes to arrogate unto himself the privilege of riding hard over the activities of the major league unpain.
"It is our information that on this point the judge has not the chance of a poor relation."
He may perish the magnates, both minor and major, that a new draft agreement is not only justifiable, but expedient, he may provail upon deaf ears to hear a mask or a more equitable distribution of world's series expenses, he may jam thrue any and all what-ever remaining forms he may have in mind, but on the question of umpire control Messrs Johnson and Heydler will be so much granite.
This is one of their few excuses of official existence and as such as a most valued relic of an affluent past. One might just as reasonably ask the men for their front teeth.
A further consideration is that a fight for recognition of this point might lead to greater opportunities for Johnson and Heydler in all details.
The issue, if any, is to be settled with dignified moderation, it
SARGUM SPROUTINGS
By Sargum Sprout
A good crowd greeted the Fullerton club's mixed boxing and wrestling show last evening. The boxing exhibitions were put on by youngsters and while the bouts were not scientific they were chuck full of action and pleased the fans very much.
The wrestling match was between Duguid and 'Bol' Montona. Duguid had an advantage of about 20 pounds of weight but he tween Duguid and 'Bol' Montana twice in 75 minutes. The 'Bol' would not be pinned twice and was given the candy aloft be dusted the mat once with his back.
It was a great match to watch. The powerful Duguid applied some vigorous holds but the 'Bol' succeeded in breaking them all but a front body scissors.
Right on the jump off Duguid applied a bar arm lock that looked to have 'Bol' down or break his arm. Duguid was the first man I ever saw that could put a head lock on 'Bol.'
'Bool' had Duguid in a very bad way with a toe hold once, and applied several head crushers that had the larger boy worried 'Bool' got tough seven times and hit Duguid on two occasions. Once on being warned by the referee he threatened to paste the official which gave the audience a big kick.
There were severa notable of the wrestling game in attendance. Five or six challenged the winner. Those that wished for a chance at the 'Bool' were: Tom Roller, Orland Miller, Constantine

JOHN BULL WOULD MATCH DEMPSEY
NEW YORK, Dec. 8. — John Bull has properly adjusted his monocle—he's going to find a heavyweight to match with Jack Dempsey or box himself to death in the attempt.
Such, at least, is the prediction of Eugene Corri, England's famous referee, who tells of the virtual white hope epidemic raging in the British Isles.
It's as bad, said Corri, as the inslads through which the United States passed after Jim Jeffries went to sleep down in Havana after Jack Johnson had found the button.
Corri credits the picturesque Tex O'Rourke as the germ which has infected the Britishers. Tex, it seems, is going hither and yon and elsewhere from Cork to the northern extremity of the home of the stuff the Atlantic rum fleet is selling off Sandy Hook, hunting in every nook and corner for a bally bounder to do fisticuffs with the Manasa Mauler for one of Tex Rickard's million-dollar presents.
There were several notable of the wrestling game in attendance. Five or six challenged the winner. Those that wished for a chance at the 'Boo' were: Tom Roller, Orland Miller, Constantine Romanoff, Jim Londos and Dasante Singh.
Mr. Singh is the champion of India and while he only weighs 165 pounds he was willing to wrestle 'Boo' winner take all, best two out of three falls and was also willing to dig up a side bet. 'Boo' said that no Hindoo could bluff him so it looks like Hindoo stand against Italy for the next club shown.
Rey Mabea was out to the wrestling show long enough to try to sell every one present a flivver 'Boo' Montana told Roy that he had enough wrestling ahead to keep him busy, that he was not in the market for a Lissie at present. Jim Londos said a Ford was too in the win column once again; friends about. The last we saw of Roy he had Fullerton's white wing brigade cornered trying to sell them a flivver truck. Roy was a good wrestler but as a flivver salesman he is the best ever. Roy says that selling Fords is much easier than wrestling, and so we do not expect to see Roy on the mat again.
Tomorrow if the wind lets up there will be real ball game out to the high school grounds. GIANT TRADE INCREASES THE BELIEF
N.Y. CLUB HOLDS INTEREST IN BRAVES
Davey Bancroft reaching for an easy one and Casey Stengel in home run hitting trim.
The recent trade between the New York Giants and Boston Braves strengthens the ever-growing belief that the New York club holds an interest in the Hub team, now run by Christy Mathewson and Barnoy Fuchs. The Braves, a tail-end club for several seasons, get Dave Bancroft as a playing manager, Home Run Casey Stengel, and Outfielder Bill Cunningham for Outfielder Southworth and Pitcher Joe Oeschger. It seems probable that McGraw could have obtained much more material or dough, had he cared to dispose of the brilliant and brainy shortstop and Stengel to some other club. As it is, the deal goes far toward revamping the rut-riding Braves.

HAMMEL WORTH
BILLION MARKS
Responding to the request made to relatives in Germany for 500 worth of German marks, Otto Hammel is in receipt of one billion, 58 million marks. One piece of currency had been printed over with red ink to raise the original issue figures of 1060 marks to the millairden indication as use of marks has been abandoned in the country, leaving them utterly worthless. The letter stated they are good only for fires.
The postage on the letter was indicated by five stamps each marked "milharden," which is more than double 10,000,000 marks. The letter had been consorted and stamped before it left Germany, according to the ruling of Nov. 15, 1918.
Conditions are described as depleable, there being no work whatever for men and but a limited amount for the women. The writer asks that all Germans in Anaheim pray for the country and its people and send all financial aid possible. Coal costs 20 billion marks per ztr, a weight of 119 pounds, and very few people can buy it. Business is no good, "but what can we do?" is the discouraging query.

CRASH CAUSES
REORGANIZATION
WASHINGTON, Dec. 8. — The ruinous economic and financial state of the whole of Russia was one of the chief causes of the recent reorganization of the Russian soviet into ten autonomous republics under the general direction and leadership of the Moscow government, according to advises reaching here through official channels.
The union of soviet republics in now said to embrace an area of more than 7,000,000 square miles—nearly twice the area of the United States—with a population of 132,000,000. The autonomous republics are: Bashkirn, Tartar, Kirghiz, Mountain, Daghestan, Turkestan, Crimea, Yakutsk, Karteia and Buriat-Mongol. In addition to these there are a number of "autonomous areas," each ruled by a regional executive committee, which send delegates to the all-Russian soviet congresses and the central executive committee of the Russian socialist federal soviet republic.
NORTH PACIFIC
GALE DAMAGING
SEATTLE, Dec. 8. — The heavy gale which swept the north Pacific coast Wednesday night and Thursday devastated wide areas of virgin timber, wrecked houses and cut off all lines of communication on the west portion of the Olympic peninsula, according to word reaching here by indirect routes this afternoon.
In the face of meager reports it was impossible to estimate the amount of damage done, but the most conservative advice place losses at not less than $5,000-1000.

GAS INDUSTRY IS THIRD IN STATE
Guests of District Superintendent "Jack" Hayden thirty or forty newspaper folk of Orange-co. yesterday afternoon following a dinner at St. Ann's Inn, Santa Ana, toured the Southern Counties Gas Co.'s compressor plant beyond Placentia and inspected some of its Anaheim facilities. The various phases of the company's work in preparing gas for domestic and industrial use were described in detail by the company’s experts, including Frank Bevins of Los Angeles, one of the pioneer officials, who was the principal speaker at the dinner. Bevins and Hayden gave numerous statistics on the company's plant and operations in the county, and showed the absurdity of the repeated charges that the company is letting gas go to waste in the fields and that its job is the simple one of bitching its pipes to a field and letting the gas flow to the ultimate consumer.
All the public buildings in the county are heated by natural gas. Bevins told his hearers at the dinner. Bevins outlined the history of gas manufacture and of his company.
Owing to the fact that all of the oil fields in So. Calif. are tied together by the company's system of 10-inch and 12-inch pipes, the failure of one field does not endanger the constancy of supply.
Because of the fact that natural gas contains practically twice as many heat units as artificial there is maximum saving of 100 per cent to users of the former Orange-co. gets its gas 13 per cent cheaper than the city of Los Angeles.
The gas industry is the third largest in So. Calif.
The party, after driving to Anaheim, left the local office of the company and proceeded directly to the compressor plant. This plant is designed to put the gas at the right pressure before it enters the pipes to be transmit-

"TARIFF WALL" FOR WHEAT GROWERS
DENVER, Dec. 8.—A vigorous effort to build up a "tariff wall" in favor of American farmers will result from the recent meeting here of the American Wheat Growers, Associated. A federal "export agency" is also a probable outgrowth of action taken here.
The Denver meeting attended by delegates from a dozen wheat-growing states, was addressed by Eugene Meyer, Jr., managing director of the War Finance Corp., and by former Congressman F. W. Mondell of Wyoming, a director of the corporation, both of whom were named by President Obama to make a survey of the important wheat centers of the country with a view to recommending action that might alleviate the economic depression complained of in the agricultural industry.
As an important factor in remedying existing evils so far as the wheat grower is concerned, Managing Director Meyer urged adoption of the co-operative marketing plan among wheat growers, and intimated that the federal government would readily supply
STATE CHAIRMEN IN JOINT PROTEST
By Alber E. Boynton
Albert E. Boynton, chairman of the California Republican State committee, announced today that he was wiring Republican chairmen in a number of important states, urging them to join with California in a vigorous protest to the Republican National Committee.
Boynton is basing his protest upon the fact that under an exact apportionment of delegates to Republican votes cast in 1920 California would be entitled to 29 seats in the coming convention, whereas under the plan recommended to the National Committee this state will receive but 28.
The outstanding and utterly inexplicable feature of this situation is that the group of strongholds of Republicanism in this Nation, are being penalized for the benefit of the "Solid South," which perver cast an electoral vote for the Republican ticket.
California cast more Republican votes in 1920 than the total vote cast in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia Florida, Alabama, Mississippi Louisiana and Arkansas, combined, yet she is given 28 delegates while that group of states is allowed 101. I am sure that every Californian who is proud of the growth of his state and of the important position which it has assumed among the real Republican states of America will support the campaign to remedy the injustice that is done her.
7 LIVES LOST IN FARMHOUSE BLAZE
WALLACEBURG, Ont., Dec. 8.—Seven persons, one a mother and her son, the others her sister and her four children, are dead today following a fire which destroyed Sombra Township farmhouses last night.
The gas industry is the third largest in So. Calif.
The party, after driving to Anaheim, left the local office of the company and proceeded directly to the compressor plant. This plant is designed to put the gas at the right pressure before it enters the pipes to be transmitted to consumers. It is one of many which the company has in various oil fields. It contains at present 12 compressor units, with four more to come when necessary, for which the foundations are already in. Across the road from this plant is a compressor plant of the Standard Oil Co., containing 16 more units, making 28 in all the field.
Here the company has gasometers which maintain the gas at proper flow to the compressors, and gauges which measure the pressure of incoming and outgoing gas. The gas is raised from a pressure of 25 to 50 pounds per square inch to 250 pounds. In each city, it is cut to a few ounces for actual use by consumers.
There are 89 gas compressor units in the company's entire system. They cost $25,000 per unit.
The company at each compressor plant manufactures its own electricity from gas to run its dynamos. Bessemer gas engines and Ingersoll-Rand compressors are the types used.
The maximum or peak gas load in the county is 600,000 cubic feet.
The matter of why the company doesn't store gas and prevent its waste came up during the tour of the compressor plant. This tour done because of the huge expense. To store 2,000,000 cubic feet of gas, for instance, one fourth of Los Angeles' daily consumption, would cost in storage facilities alone $300,000 or more, according to Bevins.
The waste of gas is a serious problem, and 150,000,000 cubic feet per day are wasted in the Signal Hill field alone.
At the Placentia plant are static pressure gauges which weigh the gas in huge quantities as it comes in and emerges.
The life of the company's plant has been estimated by experts at 25 years. It is not as long as an oil field.
On the way from the field Superintendent Hayden pointed out the original Chapman well, which still is producing around 60 barrels of oil per day and 500,000 cubic feet of gas. The production of oil and gas of a given well are in fairly constant ratio.
The regulator in a manhole on South Lemon street just south of whom were named by President Aaduce to make a survey of the important wheat centers of the country with a view to recommending action that might alleviate the economic depression complained of in the agricultural industry.
As an important factor in remedying existing evils so far as the wheat grower is concerned, Managing Director Meyer urged adoption of the co-operative marketing plan among wheat growers, and intimated that the federal government would readily supply financial aid to enable the wheat growers to market their crops in an orderly business manner. Storing of wheat to prevent "dumping," thus insuring the producer a stable year-round price, will be a part of this "orderly business manner."
Following a two days' conference, the Wheat Growers, Associated, adopted a resolution urging a higher tariff on wheat. Geo.C. Jewett of Minneapolis, general manager of the wheat growers' organization, was authorized to present the body's demands to President Coolidge.
WATCHMAN KILLED BUT BANDITS FAIL
FERRIS, Texas, Dec. 8. After killing night watchman, W. M. Horns, 50, bank thieves early today failed in an attempt to enter the vaults of the Farmers and Merchants state bank here, fleeing the district and leaving behind the dead body of the watchman and $20,000 in gold stored in the vaults.
The murder and attempted robbery was not discovered until daylight when a newsboy, L. F. Flippen, found the body of the slain guard in the mayor's office.
The watchman had been shot thru the back of the head without warning. His still form remained in a chair, a newspaper in his hand. The combination had been knocked from the vault but failing to open the doors at first attempt, the bandits fled without further effort.

weigh the gas in huge quantities as it comes in and emerges.
The regulator in a manhole on South Lemon street just south of Center, next was examined. Hayden entering the vault with a few of the party at a time. Here the gas enters at a pressure of approximately 170 pounds per square inch and emerges at one of a few ounces for use by domestic consumers. This is in the low pressure area of Anaheim which extends from Palm to Clementine and South to Wilhelmina street.
The high pressure area, which comprises the rest of the city's territory that is served, next was entered. This line goes to Santa Ana, passing along South Lemon Street. To show the actual pressure gauges had been placed on a meter, which indicated that the gas entered at a comparatively high pressure and was reduced to one much lower to make it available to consumers.
The party broke up in Anaheim, dispersing by car to their homes.
WIND SWEEPS L. A.
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 8.—A serious wind storm struck Los Angeles late last night and early today, tearing down awnings and several trees were reported to have blown down.
The wind here is believed by the weather bureau to have been part of a rain storm that extended as far south as San Luis Obispo.
Rain was reported at several places near here, but the precipitation was light. Today's weather outlook was somewhat windy.
The Pacific fleet, anchored in Los Angeles harbor, was forced to move outside into the ocean this afternoon when the wind increased to 60 miles an hour, in order to prevent damage to other ships.
