CAL. SALES, 9 MOS.
That California is securely perched in first place among all other states in the union, in ownership of automobiles is now generally conceded by statisticians who make a close study of sales comparisons.
The extent of prosperity prevailing in the west is often lost sight of, however, insofar as it has to do with the degree of growth in the automotive industry, says Bill Goodrum of the Anaheim Auto Co.
Substantiating this statement, R. F. Thompson, general manager of the Howard Automobile Company, gives our figures bearing on the increased sale of Buicks in California. These show that the Howard organization in one state alone, California, disposed of 10,441 new Bucks in the first three quarter period of 1923 while in the same time during 1921 they disposed of 4279. The gain in the two year period is equivalent to 140 per cent. Though all makes of cars did not

Sunset Beach Thorofares, $55,000 Gravel Job, to Get Hearing
The paving of the Placentia Yotba road beyond Richfield to connect it up with the Santa Ana canyon road, announced today by the office of the county superintendent of highways, will be of particular convenience to drivers from Anaheim and the rest of the northern half of the county who go by way of Placentia. Asphalt is the material. At present the road is only oiled.

Bola Chica street and Los Patos avenue comprise about four miles and Polsa avenue, Smeltzer and Wintersburg avenues about half a mile each. The work will cost between $50,-000 and $60,000.

OAKLAND REACHES 7TH SALE PLACE
The Oakland six is firmly entrenched in third place among six cylinder cars on the volume of sales, according to figres given out by the Registration Bureau for the month of November.
"Oakland's rise in popularity has been little short of sensation," says Harry L. Turton, Orange county Oakland dealer, "coming up from an almost unknown car less than two years ago to third place among six cylinder cars in Southern California."
"But the Oakland popularity has not been merely sectional as is the case so often. It's increase in popular estimation has been nationwide. Figures computed by national organization show that it ranks seventh in sales among all cars made in sales from the factory thru to the consumer."
"The start of this rise was made in May of 1922 when the Oakland made a sweeping victory of the Los Angeles to Yosemite Economy run and augmented this

"The start of this rise was made in May of 1922 when the Oakland made a sweeping victory of the Los Angeles to Yosemite Economy run and augmented this stride by stepping out and coping the San Diego to El Centro Economy by a wide margin, defeating every other car entered.
"These victories brought the Oakland up from 85th place to 21st place, when in 1923 the Oakland again won these two great annual events, establishing what is recognized as world's records for economy by the A.A. A. By the repeating of these double victories the Oakland won its right to the crown of the economy champion.
"Along in the spring, a stock Oakland roadster started the motor world by reeling off 67.8 miles an hour for 442 minutes, showing that the car had an efficient power plant and could stand up under excessive strains.

OIL FAMINE NO HARM TO FRANKLIN
A stock 1924 Franklin sedan has just completed a New York-to-Chicago run of 1104 miles on a trifle less than three-quarters of a quart of oil. The hood was sealed during the entire trip, which was staged under the supervision of the Automobile Club of America. The car left New York city at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, and arrived at Chicago at 9:29 p.m., central time, on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Stops were made at Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo, Cleveland, Bowling Green and South Bend to replenish the gasoline supply and take pictures of the car in these cities.
The elapsed running time was 41 hours and 59 minutes; the actual running time was 37 hours and 4 minutes, or an average of 29.78 miles per hour. A pace better than an ordinary touring rate was maintained throughout the trip, and most of the time the load included five passengers.
The purpose of the Franklin Co. in staging this run was to establish under official observation the oil economy of the new 1924 Franklin, and at the same time observe gasoline consumption under fairly strenuous driving conditions. Only .736 of a quart of oil was used on the entire journey of 1104 miles, or in other words, the oil consumption amounted to 9 per cent, was considered in arriving at this figure, which was checked by the Armour Institute of Technology of Chicago. Oil consumption was at the rate of 1498 miles to the quart, or 5992 miles to the gallon. It was not the purpose of the test, however, to encourage automobile drivers to run long distances on a filling of oil. On the contrary, Franklin engineers endorse the present lubrication theory of changing oil frequently.
Three Franklin officials alternated as drivers. G. L. Schaefer and Percy Charles, both of New York city, were the official representatives of the Automobile Club of America on the trip and they acted as observers throughout the entire journey.

EFFICIENCY AND BEAUTY MARK SET
Since radio broadcasting came into being there has been a need among discriminating folk for a complete receiver, likely enough to grace any living room, and at the same time not occupying too much space. Radiola IV meets this demand so generously as to satisfy the most exacting tests of reproduction, and the cabinet will delight the eye on that wall table little used, says Robert V. Jenzen, local distributor. Radiola IV is completely self contained, all batteries necessary to the operation of the dry cell tubes being housed in the same cabinet which holds the apparatus and the highly developed loud speaker.
The left hand door opens to reveal the operating controls, and the top, to, lifts readily, for making connections or changing about the tubes.
When the few simple adjustments have been made, the door may be closed entirely to conceal the apparatus, the broadcasted voice and music pouring through the grille door at the right which closes upon the outlet of the loud speaker. Radiola IV consists of an efficient tuner in conjunction with a regenerative circuit, detector, two stages of audio amplification and loud speaker of distinctive design. It is provided with jacks for plugging in head telephones for the reception of very distant signals.
This instrument is furnished complete with all batteries, four tubes (one spare), a pair of sensitive head telephones with plug and silk covered wires for connection to antenna and ground.

RILEY INCREASES SUPPLY OF PARTS
The local Studebaker garage is not only the largest in the county, with additions recently made, but it will have on hand one of the largest stock of parts for Studebaker cars to be found anywhere in the Southland. The parts and accessories now are being put on the shelves in the big structure. According to the new arrangement, each department is segregated.
Harry D. Riley, distributor in Anaheim, Fullerton, Orange and their vicinities, will continue to use this as the repair shop of all his cars. The improvements are regarded as indicating Riley's confidence in the future growth of the city.
"Average Life of Battery 2 Years"
A battery that is only six months to a year old can usually be completely rebuilt for half its original cost, even though all three cells are burned out, according to L. H. McGee, local Westinghouse battery distributor. One cell can be replaced for one-sixth of the cost.
McGee manufactures batteries and could afford to put his guarantee on them, but doesn't make a business of it. The average life of a battery is two years without any repairs, even re-charging, McGee claims.

The Anaheim market alone has taken in $135,000 in sales money since it was opened on Feb. 23 of this year. More space may be added, Hamm declared today.
Sales here are averaging around two per day in December.
The business shown demonstrated the wisdom of the plan of operation, Hamm indicated in his report.
Bob White presided as chairman in the absence of John Tubbs.
Aside from Hamm's report, the meeting was occupied with regular routine business.
