BRITISH WIND UP HOT VOTE DRIVE
By DAVID M. CHURCH
(I. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
LONDON, Dec. 5—The British political campaign wound up last night in a blaze of oratory, and today the fate of the Baldwin cabinet will be decided at the polls.
A feature of the last 48 hours of the campaign was the growth of violence and rowdyism in certain quarters. Candidates were threatened and attacked. Lord and Lady Eustace Percy were injured in an election riot at Hastings.
A heavy vote, especially by the women, is expected. Although the result cannot be definitely forecast, it is believed in many quarters that the Tories will have a slight majority in the house of Commons. Liberal and labor leaders claim that the Tories will not be strong enough to put through Premier Baldwin's protection policy.
The main proposals of the three parties may be summarized as follows:
1. Raise revenues.
2. Give especial assistance to industries suffering from foreign competition.
3. Negotiate for a reduction of foreign tariffs.
4. Give substantial imperial preference.
No duties on wheat, flour, oats, meats, cheese, butter and egg.
One pound sterling (normal value $4.86) per acre bounty upon arable land, but non to employer who pays less than 30 shillings a week to able-bodied laborers.
Insurance reform and investigation of inconsistencies of the old age pension act.
CYPRESS, Dec. 6—Mrs. E. P. Smith underwent a serious operation at the Anaheim sanitarium yesterday. The operation was a success and while her condition last night was grave she rallied this morning and is reported to be doing nicely.
The first trouble in the drilling of our oil well was witnessed day before yesterday when a cave in set the drill back some 150 feet.
The Standard Oil Co. have been very active about the local field trying to lease acreage. Their best offer to date is a $20 bonus and $2 rental. Quite a number have accepted these terms.
Many of the local O. E. S. members attended the installation of officers at Buena Park Monday evening.
Local Masons will journey down to La Jolla Monday evening where the Buena Park past masters will confer a third degree.
Mrs. G. G. Priddy was business shopper in Los Angeles yesterday. G. G. Priddy was out bright and early trying to sell some Cypress real estate.
There was a bottle of moonshine found supporting the Edison Co.'s power pole at the corner of Lincoln and Walker-sts. When the bottle was removed, the power and lights of the neighborhood went off. The citizens of Cypress petition the 'moonshiner' to please keep his shine away from the Edison power lines.
The Stodart Brothers are erecting a modern six-room dwelling on Walker-st just opposite the church.

WIRES DONW AFTER PORTLAND STORM
PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 6.—Shipping is impaired, many telephone and telegraph wires are down and considerable damage is believed to have resulted from an all-night southerly gale which swept the Pacific northwest.
A driving rain accompanied the gale which at North Head and along the Tillamook coast attained a velocity of more than 60 miles an hour. The sea was lashed into a fury and navigation became perilous, according to reports received here.
In Portland the storm raged continuously, shaking houses breaking windows, uprooting trees and somewhat impairing street car and light service.
NO DEVELOPMENTS ON FOREIGN DEBT
WASHINGTON, Dec. 6.—Secretary of the Treasury Mellon today wrote a letter to Senator William E. Borah of Idaho, informing him that there were no developments to relate in the foreign debt situation.
The letter was written in reply to a request from Borah, who inquired concerning the status of the debts.
Mellon's letter points out that about 97,000,000 is still outstanding of the money loaned by the United States during the war. The most advanced, sturdy big debtor which thus far definitely agreed to pay.
You will note, however, that the "liberal spender" spends it all to show himself a good time.
