$20,000 NARCOTICS TAKEN IN SEATTLE SEATTLE, Dec. 5.—Opium and smoking paraphernalia valued at $20,000 was seized here last night by combined federal narcotic forces, police and representatives of the sheriff's office in one of the most spectacular narcotic rains in the history of Seattle. Leaping from a third-story window across an alley to a fire escape, the six raiders entered an upstairs social club, which had been made impregnable from the floor below. Nearly 100 Chinese were found within. Of these, the raiders arrested nine, alleged to have been caught in the act of smoking opium. Approximately ten pounds of opium and yenshee was found beneath the floor of the den. CEREALS TAKEN FROM GIRLS' HEADS WASHINGTON, C. H., Ohio. Dec. 5.—Operations for removal of cereal grains from the heads of two children were performed in a hospital here on the same day. Surgeons took from the nose of a 6-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Chasteen, living near here, a grain of corn possessing a two-inch sprout. Four hours were consumed in removing from an ear of Helen Jane Turner, 8-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Turner, Hillsboro, a grain of wheat, a root of which had grown along a bone in the middle ear. The surgeons were forced to remove decayed bone from Helen's head. Man's Best Friend Checks Crime Wave The new White House Guard and his Father The Best Burglar Alarm for your Home circumvent the police or dodge the caretaker, janitor or watchman, but they do not get by the ear of a loyal, unsleeping watchdog. As a "burglar alarm," dogs have often thwarted attempts at burglary, theft and larceny. Dogs an Asset In a small suburb near Boston there were 12 burglaries within the year and not one of these took place where a family owned a dog. In one thickly settled residential section of a large city, a survey was made recently covering only ten blocks. The result showed that during three months' time there were more than twenty burglaries in this district and not one of them fame as the custodian and guard of the White House. Today the dog even in cities, is proving his ancient value and great usefulness as man's best friend. The earliest reference to him is undoubtedly in the Zend-Avesta, the religious book of Zoroaster, a work so old that its origin is lost in antiquity. In this book, penalties are set forth in detail for injuries to dogs. His value to the householder is proven by the fact that if a dog was killed, the man who did it was obliged to pay for the dog as well as for any lost goods which resulted from this loss of guardianship. The tombs of Egyptian kings have always contained pictures and sculptures of dogs and they invariably Household Hints SUGGESTIONS Keeping Baby's Hands Warm—adding an extra strip of out-fannel to the sleeves in baby's over nighties" and whipping ends together, his little hands warm. By using them one can set a taste and at the same time economical table and save the canned things for later when the fresh vegetables are not so good. They are all good, well cooked in salted water drained and served with butter or with a good cream sauce. Variety is the spice of life, however, and here are a few unusual ways of using the vegetables that may popularize them in your family. Parsnip Fluffs — Six medium sized parsnips, one cup gravy, one half cup very thick white sauce, one-quarter cup ground peanuts, one teaspoon salt, one-sixteenth teaspoon pepper. Dinthe the gravy with an equal quantity of cold water and simmer the sliced parsnips in it until tender and all of the liquid is absorbed. Mash and combine with the white sauce made of one tablespoon butter, two tablespoons flour and one-half cup milk. Season and when cool form into small balls. Roll in the ground peanuts, making as many achieve as possible. Roll in crumbs, egg, and crumble. Fry in deep fat until a delicate brown. Turnip Puree—This is a savory soup especially appetizing on a cold day. Four white turnips, one tablespoon butter, one potato, one onion, one sprig of parsley, one-half bay leaf, one whole clove, one teaspoon salt, one-eighth teaspoon pepper, two cups stock, one cup condensed tomato. Peel and slice the turnips. Cook in the melted butter fifteen minutes, stirring to avoid scorching. Add the sliced petato and onion, also the seasonings and the stock. MENU HINT We are in the habit of thinking of cereals as something to be eaten for breakfast, and occasionally we make oatmeal bread or bran rolls, but generally we think we have done our duty if we eat a dish of cooked cereal in winter or of the commercially prepared ones in summer. The following menu incorporates cereals in every meal in a most attractive as well as healthful way. Breakfast Grapefruit Whole Wheat Cereal with Cream Whole Wheat Muffins Bacon Butter Coffee or Substitute Dinner Beef Leaf with Cereal Gravy Escalloped Potatoes with Cheese Buttered Baked Squash Chopped Cabbage Olives Tomato Marmalade Roll Jell Cake Tea and Milk Supper Tomato Soup Twisted Bread Sticks French Fried Bread with Honey Canned Sweet Cherries Bran Cookies Cocoa TODAY'S RECIPES White Wheat Muffins—One egg well beaten, butter size of an egg (neck), two and a half tablespoons granulated sugar, one cup sweet milk, one-fourth teaspoon salt, one and one-half cups whole SAGACIOUS HEN IS EGG CHAMPION DEFIANCE, Ohio, Dec. 5.—Actions which border on human intelligence, it is claimed, have won for "Biddy," a white Wyandotte, a position as a household pet in the home of its owner, Mrs. W. L. Manahan, East Main street. But the fact that this chicken is unusually obedient for a fowl and always looks to the right and left before crossing the highway—a thing other chickens sold-dom do—is not its chief virtue. "Biddy" is noted more for her remarkable four-year egg-laying record. To date she has produced $17 eggs in four years. Mrs. Manahan anticipates that, if nothing occurs to mar prospects during the next four years, "Biddy" will establish a new eight-year record. In the 11 shows in which she has participated "Biddy" has not failed to win a ribbon, it is claimed. SPURNS COURT TRIBUTE; 30 DAYS WATERLOO, Is., Dec. 5.—Frank Rutter, of this city, is serving a thirty-day sentence in the city jail because payment of $1.50 fine on an intoxication charge is against his principles. "Millions for charity," Rutter says, "but not a red cent for tribute." The arrest disclosed that another $10 from a previous fine remains unpaid. He strenuously denied being drunk, and told police he had experienced the sensation often enough to know when he had passed the borders of sobriety.
