PLANTPEP TURNS DEAD TREE GREEN Whether plantpep, the chemical preparation now being experimented with here, does all the things claimed for it or not, it does cause a certain vital activity in plants and trees on which it is used. This was shown today when a party consisting of the inventor, Gastay Rasmus; Chris Allen of LaHabra, his assistant; Manager G. W. Sandilands of the Anaheim Orange & Lemon Ass'n, Joe Carroll, well known rancher; and Pritz Yungbluth inspected the rose bushes and orange trees treated 16 days ago. Plantpep is made by Rasmus, president and general manager of the Pep Chemical Co. and formerly state industrial commissioner, of Glendale. The first thing inspected was a rose bush in front of Sandilands' house no East Center-st. Many new shoots have appeared on the bush since it was treated. Next, two trees in the adjacent orchards were looked at. Both particularly one of them, showed new life, including a few new shoots. Sandilands and Carroll still were unwilling to commit themselves to endorsing the mixture. But when a third tree suffering from scaly bark was inspected, Sandilands admitted that the treatment had done some good. The bark, when cut away, was shown to have green beneath it, and the disease to have shown a change in condition, unlike its habit at this time of year. What Sandilands appeared doubtful about was whether the same results might not have been obtained with a stronger fertilizer. Further treatments were applied to the trees today. Green also was seen beneath another tree in Yungbluth's grove from which the bark had been cut away. Ten days is the minimum time The bark, when cut away, was shown to have green beneath it, and the disease to have shown a change in condition, unlike its habit at this time of year. Green also was seen beneath another tree in Yungbluith's grove, from which the bark had been cut away. Ten days is the minimum time when appreciative results are evident, and Rasmus is confident that he can save all of the trees, including one or two which would have been removed as hopeless. —Buy In Anaheim— GILLETT ELECTED SPEAKER OF HOUSE OF CONGRESS (Continued from page one) Peace conference, which lasted far into the flight at the Capitol. After the futile balloting and adjournment, Representative Longworth, the Republican leader, was still adamant in his decision not to treat with the insurgent bloc, as such. A few hours after White House emissaries had been to the Capitol to arrange for the president's appearance to deliver his message, however, there was a marked change on Longworth's part and a conference was hurriedly arranged. The two days tie-up and the postponement of Mr. Coolidge's appearance with his message has constituted a source of real embarrassment to the White House. For two days the spectacle has been before the country of a Republican congress and a Republican administration being held impotent and helpless in the hands of a determined little bloc of 22 western Republicans and the washing of so much family linen in public was held not to be good for the party. The house expected to complete organization in jig time today. Speaker Gillett was slated for re-election on the first ballot—then the rest of the organization routine rapidly completed. Meanwhile, congress was threatened today with a replica of the house brawl on the senate side, where the insurgents are up in arms against Senator A. B. Cummins, Republican of Iowa, over both the presidency of the senate and the charmanship of the powerful Interstate Commerce Committee. Thus far the senate has avoided fights by sedately meeting and adjourning. The spectacular fight in the house has furnished a ready made excuse. But with the house organized and ready to do business, the senate show-down cannot long be deferred. Thus for the senate has avoided fights by sedately meeting and adjourning. The spectacular fight in the house has furnished a ready made excuse. But with the house organized and ready to do business, the senate show-down cannot long be deferred. The fire works are expected as soon as President Coolidge has said his message before a joint session. The first move is expected to be a motion to declare the senate chair vacant. The Democrats are understood to have agreed to support the insurgents in this and if they stand together it will be accomplished. Then the fight over Cummins' successor will start. There was a distinct uneasy feeling today on the part of Republican leaders on both sides of the Capitol and the outlook was not considered remote of more protracted fighting which will tie up the business of the 68th congress for several weeks.
