WILLYS OUTPUT IS 650 PER DAY
Demand for the popular price cars of the Willys-Overland line has so far exceeded calculations that the Willys-Overland Co. was forced to raise its October production schedule for the standard Overlands, model 91, from 515 to 690 per day. A further raise to 650 per day during November was also made.
October promises to be a big month for Willys-Overland in Southern California with 238 Overlands and 190 Willys-Knights registered during the first 19 days a total of 425 as compared with 540 for all of September.
"During the first half of the month," says L. J. McCracken, manager of the Los Angeles branch, "we delivered 700 cars to dealers in this part of the state."
"Unfortunately, however, these deliveries included few of the new Overland Champions, which caught on so well from the start that orders for 121 of them were placed the first week of their showing here."
"We are supplied with enough Red Birds to assure immediate delivery but shipments of Overland 91 are far behind orders. Of course we have not enough Willys-Knights to meet the demand. We never have. The present shortage of them is 150."
"Buying has turned in the direction of all the closed models of the Willys-Overland line so that sales of them now equal those of open cars."
"Our San Diego dealer tells me that his October sales will show an increase of 30 per cent over September."
"Altogether Willys-Overland is having a big autumn boom down this way. This speeding up of production at the Toledo factory should pull us out of the shortage hole in a few weeks. At least I hope it will, though there seems likely to be an increase in buying with the coming of the winter tourist months, as there always is."

AIR MAIL PILOT REPORTED MISSING
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 1—Air mail officials today caused search to be instituted between here and Reno for mail Pilot Claire K. Vance, missing since he departed from Crissey Field at 2 p.m. yesterday.
He was due at Reno with his cargo of mail at 5 p.m. but according to word received at Crissey Field, failed to reach there.
No word was received by local officials of his having made a safe landing despite a check along his route.
Fear was expressed that the pilot may have had a serious accident or have been forced to land in the deep snow of the high Sierra mountains.
MONTH'S SALES OF STAR NEAR RECORD
The Star Motor Co. of California completed its first month's production of 124 models on Friday with a volume very close from a quantity standpoint, to its record manufacturing month of last May. That the mark of May was not exceeded was due alone to material shortages, the orders on hand at the factory in Oakland being greater on Dec. 1 than on any previous period since the first Star car was produced in Oakland 14 months ago.
If percentage gains in business can be accepted as a criterion, the prospects awaiting the 1524 Star are exceedingly resy for dealers all over the Pacific coast.
San Francisco, Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento dealers have sent car requirement orders to Sales Manager Forest Arnold of the western Star executive offices which are more than double the quantity from the same territory during a like period of 1922, immediately following the introduction of the models.
Spokane's request for the 1924 cars is three times in excess of the sales made in western Washington for the comparative era of last year. Seattle took eight cars.

WRONG/SIGNALS MENACE
The driver making a wrong signal not only invites tragedy for himself, but threatens other cars on the road, according to investigations of the legal department of the Auto Club of So. Calif. Every driver should use the utmost care in making signals accurate and easily discernible. Slipshod, indifferent signaling confuses those behind the car about to turn or stop. Improper signaling has caused many a costly accident.
San Francisco, Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento dealers have sent car requirement orders to Sales Manager Forrest Arnold of the western Star executive offices which are more than double the quantity from the same territory during a like period of 1922, immediately following the introduction of the models.
Spokane's request for the 1924 cars is three times in excess of the sales made in western Washington for the comparative era of last year. Seattle took eight times its November, 1922, schedule, whereas Portland far outdid its previous best showing.
An interesting fact, from a factory standpoint is that its Special Touring model outsold the standard and lower priced touring car. This indication of popularity has convinced factory officials at the Star plant that price is not a main factor in the purchase of a motor car.

Western Giant Cord Declared One of Best Anti-Skidding Devices
With the approach of winter weather and slippery streets comes the appeal to drivers to equip their cars with non-skid devices. Here is one of a fleet of motor stages that has entrusted the safety of its passengers to a set of 26x6 Western Giant Cord tires from the Western Auto Supply Company.
RADIO PRINTS OF CRIME SUSPECTS
WASHINGTON, Dec. 1.—The speedy identification of suspected criminals of international reputation by radioing their fingerprints to Copenhagen, London, Paris, Berlin and other European capitals is the plan of Detective Sergenat Fred Sandberg, internationally known fingerprint expert of the Washington police department.
Sergeant Sandberg does not take credit for conceiving this new and fast method of identification of crooks. The idea was conceived by Hakeen M. McCarthy.
A plea for the use of the right kind of equipment on automobiles to reduce the danger of skidding on wet pavements is again raised by officials, both of the law and of the various auto clubs in the state.
Some authorities in the east have contended that an automobile not equipped with adequately non-skid devices, driven on a wet, slushy street, was not under proper control. Their belief rapidly gained in public favor, in fact received such hearty approval that the law soon took action in the matter to the extent of arresting violators whose cars had not been so equipped.
TORRANCE FIELD TO MAKE 50,000
That the production of the ever increasing Torrance field will be close to 50,000 barrels a day is the conservative prediction based on the capacity of producers completed and those on the way to early completion.
The past week witnessed ten thousand barrels of new producer which brought the daily output up to better than 30,000 barrels. Among the important producers just completed are the Cook Drilling Company's 2000 unit.

Sergeant Sandberg does not take credit for conceiving this new and fast method of identification of crooks. The idea was conceived by Hakon Jorgensen, sub-director of the Copenhagen Denmark, police system, who has compiled and published a register of the fingerprints and numerals of every thief and criminal arrested in Denmark during the last 20 years.
Through the Jorgensen system days, weeks and month of delay through the mails and by cable will be obviated. Fingerprints of criminals are classified by numerals the world over.

That the Western Giant cord has met with instant approval among motorists is evidenced by the fact that many of the motorists in the east have contended that an automobile not equipped with adequate non-skid devices, driven on a wet, slushy street, was not under proper control. Their belief rapidly gained in public favor, in fact received such hearty approval that the law soon took action in the matter to the extent of arresting violators whose cars had not been so equipped.
Although this may seem to be a strenuous measure to mete out to car owners, it is one that receives the stamp of approval of every motorist who advocates safety and careful driving in the public highway. Carelessness on the part of many drivers whose names fill the papers every morning following a rainy evening and night, have led many of the new car owners and timid drivers to believe that the only safe place for the car, during the rainy season or winter months, was in the garage.
“There is no reason why any motorist should dread to drive his car on wet streets,” says Local Manager Brown, of the Western Auto Supply Co. “Of course, no driver should travel as fast on wet streets as he would on dry ones, but with a bit of foresight on his part when buying a car together with a little “common sense” when driving, will practically eliminate all skid dangers. Contrary to common belief, it is as necessary to have good non-skid tires on the front wheels as well as on the rear, as the tread gives the right amount of traction for steering, and many of the automobile manufacturers are now using them as standard equipment all around.
Four-wheel brakes on some of the late models demonstrates the tendency of the manufacturers to concentrate their efforts on a device that will aid in eliminating the skidding menace. Safety is the goal toward which all lines of automobile manufacturers are turning. Safety is the reason back of the instant success of our new Western Giant cord tires—a tire which we sincerely believe will insure safety to winter driving and defy greasy pavements. How can a tire prevent skidding? After years of experimentation, we have found that there is but one way to overcome this menace, and applying these rules we have built such a tire. This is the secret; a broad, flat tread equipped with suction cups and square side bars, made in such a manner that the weight of the car compresses the rubber, causing the cubs to cling securely to the wetest of streets. The sharp edges of the tread prevent side slipping.

OFFENCES IN COUNTY MOUNT

Drivers failing to signal before turning were 161.
The total violations number 1,873. These are divided into 22 different classifications.
It appears obvious that this work of calling direct and personal attention to improper driving is helpful to the community at large and serves as a warning, not only to drivers who willfully violate the law, but to those whose infractions are due to ignorance.
The problem of highway safety is ever growing more complicated and calls for the widest and friendliest co-operation of all safety agencies, the press, and the drivers themselves.

INFRINGEMENT
CHARGE BASELESS
(By Wm. Goodrum)
There have been many rumors that the Buick Motor Co. is being sued for patent infringements used in their 1924 design. This story is completely set at rest by a letter to the Anaheim Auto Co. from H. H. Bassett, president of the Buick Motor Co., which states all such rumors are absolutely untrue and without foundation in any way, shape or manner and furthermore, that as long as the buying public continues to appreciate the present design, as it certainly seems to, there is no intention on the part of the Buick Motor Co. to make any radical change.
The Buick Motor Co. feels that the public is entitled to the above information as a contradiction to propaganda, being circulated by competitors who desire to retard our sales.
We can emphatically state that such reports are absolutely without any foundation whatsoever.
To further prove that the general public appreciates the 1924 Buick is superior in quality and design, there have been over 95,000 Buick automobiles delivered to customers since August, 1923. This is a record unequalled by any other manufacturer in price class in the history of the automobile.
NO SELECTIVITY IN HAND-MADE RADIO
Home-made radio sets are often defective in one particular or another, says A. Bevillard, of the Anaheim Ignition Depot, who declared today that he wouldn't manufacture such a set, unless a purchaser insisted upon it and then only from careful drawings and specifications.
One such set sold here had little or no selectivity, and was put into Buillard's hands.
With his friends from being similarly imposed upon.
Infringement of patents, increased costs without corresponding value and efficiency of workmanship are other dangers to which home-made sets are subject, says Bevillard.
With motor No. 4 under the hood purring as continually at the day it left, the factory September 8, the Oakland "True Blue Traveler" arrived in San Francisco from Pontiac, Mich., after 13,326 miles over the roughest roads in the United States.
