WOMEN OF CALIF. PAY HEAVY TAXES An army of 46,000 California women reported personal income amounting to $127,416,212 for the calendar year 1921, and paid tax on it, according to figures which became available yesterday and were made public by Collector of Internal Revenue Rex Goodcell. The income reported by these women was within ten million dollars of the combined personal income of all classes turned in by the States of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. Collector Goodcell's survey showed that 7505 women filed income returns as heads of families, and reported personal incomes for the year amounting to $20,923,294. That the unmarried women of California are not only real wage earners, but have become a powerful factor in the production of income taxes, was indicated by Collector Goodcell's report that 33,595 single women filed separate returns which disclosed total personal incomes of $76,200,180. There were 5,150 women who filed returns separate from their husbands in which $30,292,738 was listed for taxes. Joint returns filed by husbands and wives, separate returns filed by single men and by men who were heads of families, reported personal income of $1,036,531,518. Of these returns 194,295 were joint reports calling for personal income of $726,731,477. Men filing as heads of families numbered 21,131 and they reported personal income of $50,304,028. A total of 124,256 single men turned in personal incomes of $249,495,943, on which tax was paid. More single women filed income returns in California than the combined number of similar returns filed in the eleven Western states of Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming. LAST WORD IN CIRCUS DEMOS HAVE OWN TAX RELIEF PLAN WASHINGTON. Nov. 26.—The Democrats of the 68th Congress are planning their own program of tax relief. In the confusion of conflicting views and "plans," it appeared today that the situation upon the convening of Congress will be somewhat as follows: 1. The Republican regulars, numbering some 44 in the Senate and 210 in the House, will support the Mellon plan. They lack a majority in either house. 2. The Democrats, numbering 43 in the Senate and 205 in the House, will present their own tax reduction program differing from the Mellon plan in that there will be sharper tax cuts on small incomes and slighter ones on big incomes. 3. The Republican "irregulars" of progressives, numbering a handful in the Senate and the House, under the leadership of Senator LaFollette, Rep. of Wisconsin, will fight for drastic cuts on small incomes and actual increases on taxation of big incomes. WINTER SPORT ON IN COLORADO DENVER. Nov. 26.—Winter sports in Colorado will soon be under way. With nearly two feet of snow packing the slopes, the ski cone on Mt. Generee, 25 miles west of this city, is reported in ideal condition and scores of enthusiasts who have become inbued with the sport of the Vikings are forming clubs to participate in the great Winter sport of skiing. Special takeoffs at various heights will be erected so that tyro and professional may have conditions right for his favorite jump. STANFORD BANS HAZING FRESHMEN STANFORD UNIVERSITY. Nov. 26.—Hazing in all forms, including paddling, tubbing and stripping, are under student ban at Sanford, according to Lou Gasper, president of the sophomore class and star freshman. Men filling as heads of families numbered 21,131 and they reported personal income of $50,304,908. A total of 124,256 single men turned in personal incomes of $249,495,943, on which tax was paid. More single women filed income returns in California than the combined number of similar returns filed in the eleven Western states of Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. The number filing in these States was 31,257, as against 35,293 reported in California. This survey said Colloctor Hall "indicates that the woman of California have become a remarkable factor in the production of income taxes. Income of $127,416,212 reported for taxation by the women of a single state month something." Such is the conviction of Myrna Sharlow, Chicago civic opera soprano, discovered by the noted Campanini, who told interviewers that America was so busy rumaging around in Europe for its opera talent that it couldn't see the wealth of material it had under its very nose. She imparted the confidence in telling why she hoped some day to acquire a million dollars. It is not that she yearns for diamond studded motor cars or palaces too good for kings. Miss Sharlow would use such wealth, she said, to search for talent among budding young American artists who must endure slavery to earn the means of acquiring artistic education and finish. She fancies she would establish an endowment fund which would pay overdue SAYS U. S. GIRLS PAINTED DOLLS NEW YORK, Nov. 26. — "They are beautifully painted dolls." This was the reaction of Ernest Linnenkamp, Viennese portrait painter and recognized connoisseur of feminine beauty, to American women when he arrived here. While conceding their inherent beauty, Linnenkamp intimated that the complexions of most girls he has seen here are slightly too artificial. LIONS ATTACHMENT PURELY ABSTRACT NEW HAVEN, Nov. 26. — Being a sheriff when there are lions to handle is no little matter, as Thomas L. Reilly, ex-congressman and present high sheriff for New Haven county, can testify. Sheriff Reilly a year ago had an order to attach a den of lions belonging to a woman animal trainer. He sent out a deputy who looked at the lions and pronounced them attached, but left them as they were. Later Sheriff Reilly sold three lions. Then he was sued on the ground that the person against whom the attachment was directed didn't own the lions. Up through the courts the case went until now the supreme court decides Reilly shall settle the suit as loser. On top of all that, the court informed the sheriff that his deputy should have taken possession of the lions when he attached them, and should not have been content with merely telling the world he had attached them. According to the evidence, Geo. C. Russell attacked Wayne Wright. Both are farmers. Russell insisted that when he entered Wright's barnyard last February, Wright took off his coat and picked up a sledge-hammer. Wright's menacing attitude provoked Russell, the latter admitted. Evidence showed he tapped Wright on the hend a few times with a pitchfork. INSANE ASYLUM LIQUOR OASIS SAN ANTONIO, Tex., Nov. 26. "I could liek Jack Dempsey, heavyweight champion, if I were a heavyweight—and with a few months' training I could liek Harry Greb, middleweight champion of the world." Thus did Charles J. Adams of Bridgeport, Conn., unburden himself while he stuck heavy pins deep into his flesh, arms, legs, face and other parts of his anatomy just as a little demonstration of his ability to take punishment. Being a little skeptical, the correspondent inspected the pins with due care and found them to be the usual variety. Adams asserted he has been able to stick pins into his flesh since early childhood. "Physicians say I am minus many of the nerves possessed by the average person that registers bodily pain to the brain," Adams explained, "I don't know why it is, but I know I can laugh while my body is being tortured."
