EVENING WITH CARDS AT HOME OF DR. TOMPKINS DR. AND MRS. C. P. Tompkins entertained last evening for a party of friends who pleasantly passed the evening playing five hundred. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Webb won the first prizes and Mr. Akermon, consolation. Mrs. Tompkins had her rooms very prettily decorated with autumn flowers. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Webb were voted as members, to take the place of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart N. White, who have gone to their eastern home. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Black of Santa Fe Springs substituted for Mr. and Mrs. Joe Collings. Other guests last evening included, Mr. and Mrs. William P. Webb, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Akermon, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Shipkey. Conference Closes The Bible conference which Dr. W. P. White of the Bible Extension League has been conducting for the past week in the Presbyterian church will be brought to a close with the three services on the Sabbath. Increasing audiences attest the growing interest in these studies and mark an epoch in the lives of many with respect to their attitude toward God's Word and its teaching. If you have not heard Dr. White his subjects for the three services Sabbath day will be welcome opportunities. In the morning: "The Security of the Believer." In the afternoon at three, "The Carnal Christian," and in the evening, "The Throne of David." It is the plan, if possible, to have a return visit from Dr. White in the near future. Annual Canvass Day Next Sunday, November 25, is every member canvass day in all Episcopal churches in the country. The church members pledge a budget on that day for all work, local and general. This is the fourth year since the plan began, and during the four years a great advance has been made. Parishes have increased their support everywhere, and in Southrn California, a fine institute for seamen has been established in San Pedro, an old people's home near Alhambra, a home for children at Garvanza, besides hospitals, schools, mission churches etc., all over the United States and abroad. St. Michael's, Anaheim, will fall in line with the rest of the churches Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when fourteen men will visit the homes of members in the interest of the budget for the local and general program of the church. Members are asked to pledge on a card their support for the year 1924, to stay at home in the afternoon if possible, or to leave their pledge at the door. The total budget is increased this year to $4000, divided among about, eighty families. During the week announcements of the results over the United States will be made in the daily press. Sunday morning the children of St. Michael's Sunday school bring gifts for the Children's Home, "anything their mother would like on her pantry shelf," in view of Thanksgiving Day. Social Union Evening A social meeting was enjoyed after rehearsal last evening by the Anaheim Community Choral Union at the Guild hall. Dr. White goes from Anaheim to the Second Presbyterian church of Long Beach, Dr. Buell, Pastor. The conference beginning Sabbath, Dec. 2. Forty Attend Party The Pythian Silver tea held yesterday with Mrs. C. R. Reinert and Mrs. Alex Payse, at the Broadway home of the former, was a particularly pleasant affair and the forty ladies attending chatted merrily of the coming holiday seasons and busied their fingers with needlework. At 4:30 refreshments of ice, homemade cake and hot coffee were served by the hostesses. Guests of the order included the Mesdames Nellie Houts, Amy E. Talbert, Florence F. Veal, C. Idior, Della Wheeler, June Field, Emma W. Hedges, Verna Parker, Ethel Whitlock, Lillian Reynolds, Edward Wallace, L. R. Barnes, M. Fuquay and Chirles Kingsley. The remainder of the guests were members of the Pythian Sisters. The first meeting in December will be notable as a dozen of the Orange Sisters will visit the local temple and special entertainment is being arranged. Large Hostess Committee A large hostess committee for the Monday, Nov. 26, at 2:30, I.O. O.F. hall meeting of Royal Neighbors of America suggests a very fine gathering. The committee contains the names of the Mesdames Blanche McCullock, Matilda Chambers, Clara Martin, Ida Chapman, Marion Niland, Catherine Giss, Hester Anderson, Mary Tedford, Minnie Puckert, and Nellie Trippett. There will be initiation and after the business meeting refreshments and a social hour will be held... Composer Lauded Mrs. Arnold EnEarl was again honored recently when another of her compositions was sung at the Biltmore before the Monthly Music club and received a real ovation. The lyric was written by Miss Lawson, but a suitable name for the song has not been chosen. Mrs. EnEarl is devoting her time to exclusive vocal work, although she is a talented pianist, and her compositions have been received with enthusiasm wherever presented. Local Woman Honored Miss Katherine Oliver, of Orange, well known in Fullerton for her newspaper work, as well as publicity writer or local organizations, has been chosen publicity writer representative for the California Bulletin, state organ of the Federated Music clubs. Miss Oliver is also a writer of no little note and her book of poems recently published, found the way to many hearts with its thoughts of homey cheer as well as Howery flights of imagination. Golden Wedding Day Mr. and Mrs. Chris Habener, of West Chapman-ave., near Orange County hospital, are today celebrating their fifteenth wedding anniversary. Their daughters, Mrs.V. Hammond and Miss Marguerite Habener had arranged a very pleasant afternoon inviting their ted States will be made in the daily press.
