LOWER TAXES AND HAVE BONUS, TOO
BY GEORGE R. HOLMES
(U.N. S. Staff Correspondent)
WASHINGTON, Nov. 20.—Income taxes from the highest to the lowest will be materially reduced by the congress that meets two weeks from today, but not at the expense of the soldiers' bonus.
This apparently was the opinion of leaders of both house and senate today after a week's conference inaugurated by the announcement of the Mellon reduction program.
Secretary Mellon proposed that income taxes be reduced generally from 30 to 40 percent, which reduced to dollars means more than $300,000,000. Bonus advocates believe it will be possible to work out an adjusted compensation bill that will cost the government only about $100,000,000 in cash annually.
Proponents of this plan—and they number a great majority of both house and senate—predicated their belief in the assumption that almost any kind of an adjusted compensation bill will be acceptable to the veterans.
They pointed out today that in previous bonus fights, the veterans have never been insistent upon a huge cash outlay at the start, but have been content with various kinds of bills that called for a small cash outlay and a graduated system of payments or insurance extending over a number of years. It was this kind of a bill that was passed last session and vetoed by President Harding.
The bonus advocates also point out that if a bill is passed requiring an initial outlay of approximately $100,000,000 annually, this will be almost taken care of by the payments that Great Britain will make annually on her debt to the United States.
On June 15, for instance, the British government will make a payment of $92,000,000.
Party lines will go by the boards when congress gets down to the bonus taxation fight. The Democrats are in the same position as the Republicans.

NO RAKEOFF ON MAH JONGG GAMES
KUALA LUMPUK, Malay, Nov. 20.—Chinamen in Malay, and particularly in Kuala Lumpuk, have a grouch, for it has been decided that it is illegal for them to play their national 2000-year-old game, Mah Jongg, in any house in which the occupant takes a percentage.
Eight Chinese were haled to court by the Malay cops for indulging in the pastime, with the result that the occupant of the house was fined $350, each player $5, while some $100 found on the playing table was confiscated.

NAT'L CONVENTION NOT FOR CHICAGO
CLEVELAND, Nov. 20.—Encouraged by the statement of Chairman John T. Adams of the Republican national committee, that the selection of a convention city to nominate a candidate for President next year had not been
out that if a bill is passed requiring an initial outlay of approximately $100,000,000 annually, this will be almost taken care of by the payments that Great Britain will make annually on her debt to the United States.
On June 15, for instance, the British government will make a payment of $92,000,000.
Party lines will go by the boards when congress gets down to the bonus taxation fight. The Democrats are in the same position as the Republicans. Democratic congressmen campaigned for reelection by capitalizing the failure of the Republican congress to give the veterans adjusted compensation last session and they are generally committed to it.
Similarly they assailed Republican "extravagance" and blamed this for the existing high taxes. Consequently, they cannot escape the issue any more than can the party in power.
A small but vigorous minority will conduct a savage fight against the bonus in both houses, and in this minority are some of the most powerful veterans in both parties—men like Senator William E. Borah, Republican of Idaho, and Senator Oscar W. Underwood, Democrat of Alabama.
Senator Cabot Lodge, Republican of Massachusetts, majority leader, held a long conference on the question with President Coolidge at the White House Sunday afternoon. President Coolidge, however, will deal somewhat extensively with the question in his message to congress two weeks hence.

SLAIN DUCK
RUINS SIGHT
OUIS, Nov. 20. — One of the freakiest accidents in the lore of Missouri nimrods may cost the eyesight of Dr. Max C. Starkloff, city health commissioner.
Dr. Starkloff was shooting ducks near St. Charles when a flock flew over his head.
The commissioner shot one duck and was aiming at another when the first bird fell on him, striking him squarely in the face. The wing feathers of the duck pierced one of Starkloff's eyeballs and a hemorrhage in the eye followed.
Attending doctors hold out slim hopes that the eye may be saved.

Real Good Gravy
Don't forget that the secret of making real, good gravy is KITCHEN BOUQUET. Purely a vegetable product, it makes real, good gravy of any gravy stock, bringing out its full flavor and giving it a deep, rich brown color.
Add a tablespoonful just before taking off the stove.
Don't forget KITCHEN BOUQUET, use it often — probably you have it in your pantry, if not, ask your grocer for it.

KAISER LOVING,

Princess Hermine has again

HALTS TRIAL TO PERFORM NUPTIALS
LIMA, O., Nov. 20. — A wedding may be more important than a trial. This, apparently, is the judgment of Justice of the Peace William H. Guyton.

The card was forwarded to Andders, who is now living in Parker, Ind.
