WEATHER BUREAU CHECKS MERCURY The U. S. Weather Bureau is again aiding the citrus fruit growers of this vicinity in combating the frost menace during the coming winter. Officials of the bureau are stationed throughout the citrus districts of So. Calif., each winter, to conduct temperature surveys, and to issue minimum temperature forecasts for the benefit of those who do orchard heating. Mr. Harold A. Rathbone, who handled the work in this district last year, is again in charge for the coming season. It is the aim of the Weather Bureau to make this work of maximum benefit to the growers of this section, and with this in view, special attention is being paid to thermometers and their exposure. All growers are strongly urged to submit their instruments to the local official in charge for examination. Those having thermometers which were purchased through the Fruit Growers' Supply Co. should have the markings upon the glass stems waterproofed, so that exposure to the weather will not cause the calibrations to come off. This type of instrument is especially made for orchard use by one of the world's best instrument manufacturers, and its accuracy is unquestionable. The price of this thermometer is very moderate, and well within reach of all. Special attention will be given to instruments of this type, although other good makes will be carefully examined. This work will be done without cost of any sort, and fruit growers should avail themselves of the opportunity. It is suggested that those wishing the service should bring their thermometers to their packing house managers, plainly marked with the owner's name and address. All instruments should be in before November 20, as it will be impossible to take care of the FIRE HOSE IS MIGHTIER THAN SWORD AGAINST SEPARATISTS IN PALATINA Acting Governor Riederer of the Palatinate Province directing use fire hose in checking advance of separatists. Because laws of the province forbid the carrying or possession of firearms the Palatinate citizens must find other weapons to use in fighting the separatist faction which is trying to include that district in Rhineland republic. The town fire hose has proved a better weapon than guns, sav leaders. It is suggested that those wishing the service should bring their thermometers to their packing house managers, plainly marked with the owner's name and address. All instruments should be in before November 20, as it will be impossible to take care of the work after that date. Some time ago Gwathney heard calls for help from a road near his home. Upon reaching the spot he found W. W. Fox, prominent citizen of Clanton, and his wife, pinned beneath their burning automobile, which had skidded and overturned. Though physically unable to offer aid, Gwathney summoned others to the scene. When the rescuers, fearing an explosion of gasoline tank, hesitated to approach the burning car, be called upon them to "follow me." Inspired by the old man's example, the rescuers quickly raised the car and extricated the injured couple. A moment later the gasoline tank exploded. Mrs. Fox died from her injuries, but Fox recovered. This is one of the greatest problems government irrigation engineers have to contend with in releasing waters from storage dams in the west for irrigation projects. Frequently waters thus release ed, the department states, become unmanageable and do much damage to property. The water often attains a velocity twice the speed of an ordinary freight train. Government engineers are constantly experimenting with safety valves in order to make the re leasing of water safe and constructive and not endanger the lives or property of people below the dams.
