LIGHTS ON KITES USED FOR SIGNALS
ALEXANDRIA BAY, N. Y., Nov. 13. — Kites carrying lights are being used to signal bootleggers by confederates living along the St. Lawrence river near here. The beacons of light far into the air are used to guide rum-running motor boats that ply between Canada and this locality.
For some time, enforcement officers and customs men have been aware of the fact that the rum boats were being guided by signals from the shores, and in a couple of instances farmers have been taken into custody for signaling with lanterns the smugglers laying off the coast.
The kite scheme, however, is a new one, and apparently used for the purpose of decoying enforcement men. In the first place, it is hard to tell in the depths of the night who is flying the kite, and again the speech of light in the sky looks not unlike a star. Only the slight difference in color and the motion caused by the swaying of the kite in the wind shows the difference.
Buy In Anaheim—Volcano Steam Used For Radiator
HONOLULU, Nov 13 — Superintendent Thomas Boles, of the Hawaii National park, located on the chilly slopes of Mauna Kea mountain, 4000 feet above the sea, doesn't have to get up mornings to light the furnace. He just turns on steam from Kilauea volcano. Boles has just completed his new residence and office building, and the pride of his heart is this home-made radiator, which uses steam from Madam Pete's cauldron. ANOTHER ONE — Two acres
HONOLULU, Nov 13—Superintendent Thomas Boles, of the Hawaii National park, located on the chilly slopes of Mauna Kea mountain, 4000 feet above the sea, doesn't have to get up mornings to light the furnace. He just turns on steam from Kilauea volcano. Boles has just completed his new residence and office building, and the pride of his heart is this home-made radiator, which uses steam from Madam Pele's cauldron. During the summer month he will find little use for it; but this winter, when snow covers the bald top of Mauna Kea, Boles figures his heating system will come in very handy.
On entering the building, the visitor steps into an information room about 20 feet square, with seven large windows, which, with white walls, provide an airy and inviting place for maps and other information concerning the national park and the whole island group. The value of the park service as a tourist promotion asset may be appreciated when one notes that there were 16,000 visitors to the park area in 1921, 27,500 in 1922, and present indications are that the number for 1923 will exceed 35,000.

NEANDERTHAL TRACES
VIENNA, Nov. 13—Dr. Josef Bayer of the Viennese Natural History Museum, announces that he has found traces of the so-called "Neanderthal Man" in the Dead Mountains of Upper Austria. The "Neanderthals" are known to be the oldest human race, and are so called after bones found in the Neander valley, Germany, in 1856.
Besides human remains, Bayer found tools made of stone which embody the characteristics of that period.
