CURTAIN DROPS IN STOKES CASE BY JACK CARBERRY (I. N. S. Staff Correspondent) NEW YORK, Nov. 9—The final curtain was descending on the marital drama of "Stokes versus Stokes" today. Max D. Steuer, chief counsel of William Earl Dodge Stokes, 73-year-old millionaire, who is seeking to divorce his pretty titian-haired wife, Helen Elwood Stokes, assumed his final argument in the case this morning. He painted Stokes as a "doting husband" and a "benefactor to all mankind". Samuel Untermyer, Mrs. Stokes' attorney, already had concluded for the defense and the case was expected to go to the jury shortly. Never, perhaps, has a divorce case ran such a wide range of the dramatic. Five full court weeks have been taken up in the hearing. Fifty-six persons have testified—28 for each side. Regardless of the verdict, the case of Stokes against Stokes is far from over. Victory for Stokes is expected to result in: 1. An appeal by Mrs. Stokes, to have his two children, now awarded to the mother, taken from the jurisdiction of the juvenile judge, Ben B. Lindsay of Denver, and accorded to him. 2. A contest of the dower right award, granted his wife by the New York supreme court. Victory for Mrs. Stokes probably will bring: 1. A grand jury investigation directed by District Attorney J. A. Banton of New York, to determine if perjury was committed in the present case. 2. Prosecution in Chicago the first week in December, of conspiracy indictments against Stokes, one of his lawyers and five of his witnesses. SANTA FE LEASE, Nov. 9. (Special).—Wm. Sinclair is taking Jake Collins' place as production foreman of this lease. Mr. Collins had another very bad spell Sunday. James Smart, chief electrician on the battleship Tennessee, spent Saturday and Sunday with his friends, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Braner of this lease. Mrs. Jones entertained Friday, Mrs. Hempell and daughter Mrs. Schofner of Los Angeles, Miss Alta Stevens and Miss Rosamond Bell, who have come to Los Angeles from the state of Illinois. Mrs. Willis Evans and son Harry were Redondo visitors Sunday. Fred Jones of Orange visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Jones, of this lease Monday. This past week the field's outage was less than 76,000 barrels; the loss seems to be running about 5000 barrels per week. The fire has few wells drilling, and it few wells nearing completion; that it will soon cease to fight very heavily in the present oil production condition of Southern California. The only completions of the week were made by the Amalgamated Oil Company and the Central Oil Company of Los Angeles. The Amalgamated Oil Company put a 125-larret well on production at Millett-Keck No. 36. Central Oil Company's No. 2 completed at 5002 is making less than 200. A half a barrel of 32 gravel oil was the result of the Helens Petroleum's mystery witch on the Garnier ranch near Pueblo in a production test made a few days ago. On account of the excellent condition of the hole, St. Helens will resume/drill and do further exploration work. The failure of the St. Helens get a big well will deal a huge blow to lease hounds who have taken considerable property in the district. The long expected and much watched Brea test well on Graham-Loftus property has proved something of a disappointment. Much property was leased and taken up recently with hope that the G. & L well would open something big in the wet area of deep sand producer. Drill to 4263 feet the Union Oil Company's test well is only makin' 200 barrels, 117.5 gravity. The Union Oil Company's sensation last week at Richfield, Morse hauls settled down to a mode producer of 600 barrels. At Artesia the Artesia Oil Co., 3. A content of the dower right award, granted his wife by the New York supreme court. 3. Institution of Mrs. Stokes' separation suit, with a demand $75,000 a year alimony, the bill to be heard by a justice of the New York supreme court. 4. An appeal to a higher court in the verdict in the present case. 5. Institution of action, by Mrs. Stokes to have her dower right for $2,222,323 confirmed at once. Such litigation would probably keep the Stokes case on the legal calendars of at least three states for the next five years. FAVOR RAFTS IN LIEU OF LIFEBOATS LONDON, Nov. 9.—Substitution of rafts for lifeboats on liners is now under consideration by the Board of Trade here, a body that has the control of all regulations concerning the safety of lives at sea. Advocates of the raft claim that it has many advantages over the lifeboat. More of them, it is urged can be carried in less space and launching is much easier. Mrs. J. J. Andrews returned to her home in Buena Park Saturday after a few days with her mother, of this lease. She has been quite ill for a few days. Miss Ada Hack and her Humphrey of Gardena, visited Mr. and Mrs. Griminger and family Sunday. Clayton Robb has purchased a 1924 model Ford coupe. SEEKS REGULAR JAIL SENTENCE NEW YORK, Nov. 9.—Every fall John Franckenstein, 57, gets a bankering for free board and lodging that can only be satisfied, it seems, by a jail sentence. This year was no exception. Frankenstein showed up recently for arraignment on a charge of vagrancy and at his own request was given 60 days. Court officials said he has not missed once in the last five years, only hitherto he has asked and received six months. He was formerly a policeman. —Shop Early— Plain Dealer Ads Always Bring Results YORBA LINDA YORBA LINDA, Nov. 9.—(Spl. DECREASE SHOWN IN SHIP BUILDING LONDON, Nov. 9.—Construction of ships throughout the world has reached the lowest total figure recorded since 1913, according to returns compiled by Lloyds Register for the quarter ending Sept. 30. The United States, the report reveals, is building the smallest amount of shipping tonnage of any maritime nation in the world, while England, despite the fact that her ship construction is less at present than at any time in the last 14 years, is leading the world in shipbuilding activities. The total amount of tonnage nominally under construction all over the world is 2,377,697 tons. This figure, however, includes 325,000 tons on which work has been suspended, so that construction work is actually proceeding on only 2,052,697 tons. This is less by 1,393,851 tons than the pre-war record of 3,446,558 tons on June 30, 1913. In Great Britain a total tonnage of 1,029,000 is actually under construction. Nominally, Gt Britain is building approximately 1,271,195 tons of ships, but construction work on 242,000 tons of this has been suspended.
