GRAPE SHIPMENTS AHEAD LAST YEAR
SACRAMENTO, Oct. 29. The grape shipments to date total 31,495 cars, as against 29,731 cars for the corresponding period of 1922, according to a summary of crop conditions issued jointly by E. E. Kaufman, agricultural statistician of the federal government and O. H. Hecke, state director of agriculture.
Weather conditions during the first half of October generally have been favorable. Rainfall occurred in the northern part of the state on the 5th, extending south of Tehachapi two days later. No loss to prunes is reported, but rains suffered slightly. The principal effect was in delaying harvesting and threshing operations a few days.
According to the report a small percentage of grapes will remain unpicked unless the car shortage is remedied.
Officials estimate the lima bean production for the year at 972,000 sacks from approximately 100,000 acres, as compared with $1,275,000 sacks production from 125,000 acres in 1922. Other bean crops are expected to total 2,716,000 bushels against 2,653,000 bushels last year, according to the report.

STATE BRANCH LIBRARIAN QUITS
SACRAMENTO, Oct. 29—Charges of insubordination have filed with the state civil service commission against Miss Mary H. McLaughlin, in charge of the Suro branch of the state library in San Francisco, by Milton J. Ferguson, state librarian, it was announced today.
The charge is based on the claim by Ferguson that he ordered Miss McLaughlin to report for duty in Sacramento on Oct. 1, and that she refused to comply with the order. The state librarian quoted Miss McLaughlin as saying that she did not like Sacramento, and would resign rather than be assigned to this city.
