NO SPECIAL CAMPAIGN
AGAINST OBSCURED PLATES
There will be no special drive against car owners who fail to keep their license plates clean and unobscured by bumpers, etc., but the campaign against them is continuous, according to officials of the state division of motor vehicles. A second campaign, immediately following that against headlight offenders, was to have been instituted, according to an announcement a few weeks ago. This offence, like reckless driving, will be prosecuted under the general provisions of the law. The special drive against headlight offenders has been arranged at the discretion of the state division and its traffic squads.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 27. — Announcement that the 1923 Los Angeles Automobile Show will be staged here for nine gala days, starting Saturday, Nov. 10, was authorized today by officials of the Motor Car Dealers' association, under whose auspices the show will be held.
Prager park will be used for this, the 11th annual motor car, truck and accessory exposition of Southern California. In view of the fact that the 1924 model announcements have come earlier than usual, from the manufacturing centers this year, high interest in the L. A. Auto Show is anticipated; an interest based on the debut here for the first time of many new models and genuine "first night" surprises that the manufacturers and distributors have saved for show patrons.
To say that this year's monster exhibit of cars, trucks and accessories will be a "million-dollar" affair would be hackneyed; the phrase has been used, it would seem, before at some time or other. Yet Burt L. Roberts, secretary-manager of the association and general manager of the show, asserts that it literally will be just that; more than a million dollars' worth of motor vehicles and accessories will be spread on display within the three gorgeously-decorated tents.
Similar to last year's event, in that three connected tents of large dimensions will be utilized at the show grounds—bordered by Grand Hill and Washington avenues—there will be a change as far as the music is concerned. Last year one centrally located band played and the music was wirelessed through the tents by loud speakers. This year there is to be an orchestra in each tent, and daily continuous programs of everything from the grandest of opera to the most toe-teasing of multi-cylinder symphonic jazz and popular melodies.
Los Angeles' annual show, always a most colorful one because of the beauty of the decorations and the splendor of the "special show jobs," will again-be a symphony of loveliness—a triolet of special backgrounds for the cars, it is announced by show officials. Three color schemes—flame, turquoise and goldenrod—have been selected by the (Continued on Page 2)
THIS YEAR IT IS HEARNE VS MURPHY
Beverly Hills Speed Classic Thanksgiving Day To Be Thrilling
The opening 250-mile classic at the Beverly Hills speedway last February ushered in the 1923 racing season with a battle that was never before ever dreamed of on any speedway. Inches separated Jimmy Murphy, 1922 national champion, the victor, from Bennett Hill, second place man. This same season will close on Turkey day at Beverly with an equally thrilling battle—this time, though, for the championship.
The contenders are "Grandpa" Eddie Hearne, 1919 titleholder, and Jas Anthony Murphy. At present Grandpa is just 72 points in the lead of James A. When the Thanksgiving day battle comes to a close one of the two will be away in the lead.
This is a situation that should please the most exacting of So.Cal. speed fans. It will result in a battle to the finish—a battle in which both of these knights of the boards will call into play every bit of skill, speed and generalship at their command.
And the way Murphy and Hearne play at this game of speed is entirely different. The former is a driver who gets out in front just as soon as he can and stays there as long as possible, ready practically always to dispute the lead with anyone who attempts to take first place away from him. The latter, on the other hand, is content to allow as many opponents as wish to get out (Continued on page 2)

Farran-oid Fan Belt Saves Lot of Bother
Why purchase a fan belt which may go to pieces any time and leave you in the lurch on the mountain-side, in the rain etc.? asks C. J. Nenno of Nenno & Elmers' auto supply shop.
A Farran-oid belt costs only slightly more than certain other cheaper makes and it is dependable. It is made to hold and hold on, and it is durable to the limit.
It doesn't matter whether you have a Ford or a Cadillac or Packard. Farran-oid is the belt to purchase.
Nenno or Elmers will show you the complete stock and explain why the Farran-oid is better than any other belt you can buy.

DIFFICULTIES IN WAY OF NEW ROAD
Much Brand New Construction Necessary For Highway to Harbor
Approximately two and one half miles of brand new road will have to be cut thru to complete the proposed new highway between Anaheim and Orange County harbor, according to deputies of County Engineer J. L. McBride's office.
A piece between the present terminus of South Palm street and Buaro rd. is one section in question; a piece two moles long or thereabouts between Smeltzer ave and Talbert rd.
From South Palm st. the road bends slightly to Buaro rd., which also runs north and south, then goes to Talbert road and Fairview avenue.
The office refused to voice an opinion on the wisdom or need of the road, the course of which was suggested by Supervisor W. M. Schumacher.
Fullerton is interested in that the route via Palm is the most direct possible for it to take to the harbor. Garden Grove also would be interested because that community would be near to it if not on the route.
The Anaheim Chamber of Commerce is considering the matter, following Schumacher's suggestion.
Another road, improvement of which may be started in 60 days, is a four mile stretch from Los Patos near Sunset Beach to Westminster Alamitos boulevard. The road will be graded and gravelled according to present plans.
Gravelling of roads is steadily being used in anticipation of later paving, a gravel base being required anyhow for asphalt and concrete.
A problem yet unsolved is that of using oil on gravelled roads. Oil never has been successfully used, because it will not bind gravel well, but the nearest approach is that of crushed rock and a heavy asphaltic oil, such as put on the piece of Hoselter, Santa Ana and the score or more of other California cities in a separate zone of the Appleby Plan Markets of California, with Bob Martland, secretary of the California State Auto Trade association as zone manager, now are going forward. Information is being sought from all the markets concerned, to be forwarded to Appleby in Detroit.
Selection of Martland for the position in a sense consolidates the organization of dealers, and is regarded here as a wise step.
The National Automobile Dealers association is the one that has been backing Appleby, and the former president of the Orange County Motor Car Dealers' association was taken to Detroit by Messrs. Chamberlain and Brophy, highups of the association, to push the plan.
Complete data embodying conditions at and the experience of each used car market when obtained, will be collated and forwarded to Appleby for use in connection with the service to be furnished on market conditions, merchandising and sales; changes in model long in advance, etc.
Oakland, the third largest city of the state, now has three used car markets affiliated with the Appleby Plan of California.

A problem yet unsolved is that of using oil on gravelled roads. Oil never has been successfully used, because it will not bind gravel well, but the nearest approach is that of crushed rock and a heavy asphaltic oil, such as put on the piece of Hospital road for a mile or so west of the State boulevard. This costs $2000 per mile, compared with perhaps $20,000 for asphalt or concrete.
Improvement of the Hospital road for the entire three miles west of the State boulevard is proposed in one contract. Part of the road is in Supervisor Schumacher's district part in Supervisor Whitesell's and part in Supervisor Talhert's.
The engineer still is awaiting the arrival of calcium chloride to try out on a longer piece of road than that on Verano street near Garden Grove. This is the chemical which tends to draw moisture from the air and retain it in the dirt road.
Auto Driving School
Opened In Los Angeles
Recognizing how vitally important it is that every driver should know how to operate an automobile, how to interpret traffic signals, and how to at least detect any irregularity in the running of a motor car, even if they are not able to render first aid, the Willys-Knight and Overland Dealers' Ass'n, of Los Angeles have inaugurated a free automobile driving school.
The school is to be in charge of trained men who can explain and demonstrate every angle of motor car manipulation, and who will teach each registered applicant all there is to know about everyday driving.

BUICK FOR 5TH TIME AUTO SHOW LEADER
Much interest always attaches to the drawing for spaces for the national automobile show in New York from the fact that the order of choice is determined by the total value production of the preceding year.
For the fifth consecutive year Buick got first pick at the recent drawing. Chevrolet won second choice passing Studebaker and Dodge, who dropped to third and fourth, as compared with second and third last year.
Willys-Overland, Cadillac, Nash and Hudson retained fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth places.
Durant jumped from 12th to 9th on the line, while Packard advanced to 10th position.

Low cost battery service—the very thing that every autoist is interested in. A. Bevillard, of the Anaheim Ignition Depot, says three things are necessary—start with a standard make of battery, service it properly with frequent and regular testing and filling, guard against overheating due to overcharging.
These admonitions would appear simple enough and easy to follow, but when one considers the fact that there are over 200 kinds of storage batteries on the market, only eight or ten of which can reasonably be called standard makes, that most people are extremely careless about giving any attention whatever to the battery on their car, and that fewer still know when they are overcharging their batteries, it is no wonder that the manufacturers must maintain service stations all over the country.
The Willard Storage Battery Co. of Cleveland, long ago realizing this need for a high-grade product and careful attention to that product, established a service station organization whose motto, "Through Service We Grow," has made them the largest company of its kind today.

The latter are expected to throw the burden of responsibility back upon distributors for the state or southland, and distributors to pass it along to the factories.
The latter will be able to get out from under because of the fact that the forbidden lenses are permissible in other states.
So if a factory has contracted for or stocked up heavily with a certain illegal lens, it can use it on cars shipped to other states.
Inspectors of the state division of motor vehicles are inclined to be lenient in enforcing the law against them.
Inspectors Bruck and Gilroy, who were in Orange county yesterday, emphasized again the fact that possession of a headlight certificate is not required by law, but only that lights be in adjustment. They admitted, however, that prosecutions were based almost entirely on the fact that a citation had not been (Continued on page three)
