NORA BAYES BRINGS BABES, NOT FADS, FROM EUROPE; ADOPTS THIRD FONDLING Nora Bayes with "Peter" her newest adopted boy, and, inset, Peter in a different mood. Most every returning American from Europe brings home something—a collection of suitcase tags, funny nines, noodle dogs on fancy handbags. She returned recently from abroad carrying in her arms "Peter", whom two year old boy she adopted in an English foundling asylum. He is the third orphan so adopted by Miss Bayes. CLARA KIMBALL YOUNG WRECKED HOME, MAN CHARGES; VAMPED WIFE, NOT HIM Clara Kimball Young. That Clara Kimball Young, movie queen, lured his wife to midnight bathing frolics and thereby helped wreck his home is the charge made by Joseph Sachs, wealthy Los Angeles shop owner. The accusation is hurled in his answer to a suit for separate maintenance filed by Mrs. Sachs. He says Clara induced Mrs. Sachs to leave home. Miss Young denies any such efforts. Clara Kimball Young. WEST COAST SEES ANOTHER BIG YEAR ON GRID Three western stars. Capt. "Scotch" Campbell of Stanford, left; Arthur Quinlan, Colorado captain, center, and Capt. Don Nichols of the U. of California. With Stanford, the University of California, Colorado and other big colleges looming up as formidable as ever on the grid, Pacific coast football fans are all set for another big year. John "Scotch" Campbell, captain and quarter of the Stanford eleven, playing his last year, is ranked as one of the greatest players the west coast has produced. Capt. Don Nichols of the U. of California team ranks as one of the best backfield men. THE PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIF. PUBLISHER BUILDS $1,000,000 HIGHWAY THROUGH EVERGLADES Most recent photo of Wm. J. "Fingy" Connors, and view along the highway, now under construction. Path is being cleared at left of the Palm Beach canal, shown above, for part of the roadway. Falo publisher and political leader, is spending $1,000,000 for a concrete roadway through the Florida Everglades to his home. This new highway will be 51 miles long. It will run alongside the Palm Beach canal for part of the distance. The work is ranked as one of the remarkable engineering feats of the day. The road is expected to open up country as rich in many ways as the Nile or Euphrates valleys. That his vast estate "Okeechobee" may be more easily reached and the adjacent country opened up Wm. J. On the right is an unusual dual evening frock for the debutante. It is developed in "Caramel" chiffon with inserts of lace. The chiffon and lace cape is a new and clever note. It can be detached at will. A fur trimmed negligee is illustrated in the center. Turquoise blue chiffon brocade is the material used and the sleeves and neck are trimmed with bands of beaver. A novel bead ornament is used to fasten it. RECEIVES THREE DECORATIONS FOR WORK IN GREECE Dr. Mabel Elliot. Dr. Mabel Elliot of Benton Harbor, Mich., has just returned home from Greece, where her work during the Smyrna disaster caused the Greek government to confer three decorations upon her. They are the Silver Cross of St. George, the Gold Croix of St. George and the Greek Croix de Guerre. Dr. Elliot is a graduate of the Rush medical school of Chicago. Japt. George Pfann booting one and three of his chief mates on the Cornell team. Above, Floyd Ramsey, halfback, at left, and Fullback Cassidy. Below, Frank Henderson, right end. When all but one of the line members of his unbeaten 1922 team were graduated last June, Gilmour Doble looked a bit more pessimistic than he usually does and poured over his remaining material. Apparently he had the material well lined up. For Cornell now seems headed toward another clear season with not only a good line but a brilliant backfield to work behind it. Above are Pfann and three other stars of the eleven. The work of Fullback Cassidy has been sensational to date. Not only has he shown himself to be a second John Thomas when it comes to line plunging but he kicks a mean toe when long punts or drop kicks are needed. THE MEN OF THE HOUR IN GERMANY Left to right, Herr Von Pregor, Bavarian representative in Berlin; Dr Von Kahr, Bavarian dictator, and Otto Gessler, German war miniister and military dictator. Germany is looking to the three men above, snapped after a recent conference, to lead the republic through its present crisis brought on by separatist plots in Bavaria and ever increasing activities of the communists and outside socialists. Dr. Von Kahr was recently made military dictator over Bavaria to check the separatist movement. Otto Gessler, war minister in the Stresemann cabinet, was made virtuus dictator over all Germany shortly afterward, that he might be in control of the Bavarian as well as the general German situation. Vort Pregor, as diplomatic envoy from Bavaria to Berlin, is recognized as a brilliant diplomatist. PRINCE RUPPRECHT, HAILED AS “KING,” IS PLAYING SHREWD WAITING GAME Crown prince Rupprecht and his wife. The populace of Munich raised a shout heard around Europe a few days ago when they hailed Crown Prince Rupprecht as “King of Bavaria.” European political students see in Rupprecht’s “receptive” favorite son attitude a shrewd game which he believes will land him on the Bavarian throne when the monarchists there gain control. Both Rupprecht and his young Luxomburg princess-wife are extremely popu- CORNELL HOPES FOR ANOTHER UNBEATEN ELEVEN Pfann booting one of his chief mates on all team.
