THURSDAY, October 25, 1923 TWO MORE PROBES INTO VETS' BUREAU WASHINGTON, Oct. 25.--Two new federal investigations into operation of the United States Veterans Bureau have been as a sequel to the sensation charges of graft and bribery brought against Colonel Chas. R. Forbes, former director, before a senate committee. These were: The treasury department, through national revenue bureau, launched inquiry into the whereabouts of 100,000 worth of drugs and stored by the bureau at Willie Md., during Forbes' ad campaign. Huge quantities of arms are reported to have "discovered" in the department of justice was an exhaustive probe of charges involving Forbes in an alleged conspiracy to allot millions of dollars worth of hospital construction work to a favored elite of contractors in return for a "split of the profits." The senator committee's special staff of investigators, headed by Major Gen. John O'Ryan, meanwhile was probing the bureau's records for trace of fraud and graft throughout the government's $17,000,000 hospitalization program. Evidence of nearing fraud has been unearthed, it was said, in the leasing of sites and award of construction contracts in a number of cities. Interest in the senate inquiry today was centered on whether Forbes will accept his invitation of the committee to testify in his own defense. Forbes has told the International News Service he would appear to tell his own side of the story. Altho the former director is reported to be in New York City today, prior to his departure he made the following statement to International News Service: "I intend to give you a complete statement of this whole case, but I have learned there will be further attacks upon me and I can't speak at this time. I will wait until they are finished attacking me and than I'll tell my side of the story. When I do talk they will get another sensation." From other sources, it was learned Advantages in Cash Buying! Cash buying and cash selling earns lower prices. By selling for cash, we have the money to buy for cash.
