Tuesday, October 23, 1923 VETS EXPECT TO WIN WAGE BATTLE WASHINGTON, Oct. 23.—Veterans of the world war, through the consolidated efforts of their various organizations, are expected to wield a more powerful influence when Congress convenes in December that they have any time since the 5,000,000 men and women received their discharges from the army and navy and returned to civil life. The only shoal in the course that has already been charted for the veterans is the possibility of friction over whether the onnibus measure to carry relief to the disabled veterans is to give way to the bonus bill. Some leaders of the veterans profess to believe the disabled veterans will receive first consideration at the hands of Congress, after which will follow the battle of the bonus. The power of the world war veterans has steadily been strengthened during the last few months, since all recognized national veterans' organizations came together in Washington at the suggestion of the Disabled American Veterans and, for the first time since peace was declared, gathered around the council table to work out in common legislation to solve the problems of the disabled. These, leaders of the veterans say, have never been satisfactorily solved. They now call for appropriations from the federal treasury of nearly $5,000,000 annually, a large part of which the veterans feel is wasted through needless overhead expenses. Something to Remember Real Good Gravy Don’t forget that the secret of making real, good gravy is KITCHEN BOUQUET. Purely a vegetable product, it makes real, good gravy of any gravy stock, bringing out its full flavor and giving it a deep, rich brown color. Add a tablespoonful just before taking off the stove. Don’t forget KITCHEN BOUQUET, use it often—probably you have it in your pantry, if not, ask your grocer for it. KITCHEN BOUQUET DETROIT, Oct. 23.—Virtually every case of mental deficiency recorded has its origin during the formative period of the life of the person affected, in the opinion of Dr. Arnold Gesell, Ph.D., director of the Yale psycho-clinic and professor of child hygiene at Yale University, who addressed the delegates to the annual convention of the American Child Health association at today’s session. Discussing “The Pre-School Child As a Health Problem,” Dr. Gesell made an earnest plea for a more intensive effort by individuals and organizations to improve the health and mental equipment of the child from two to six years old, who so long has been neglected. “The pre-school child is being rediscovered,” he said. “A few years ago the pre-school period of childhood was picturesquely called the ‘No Man’s Land’ in the field of public endeavor. It was pointed out that there were social provisions to protect the new-born infant and compulsory safeguards for boys and girls of school age; but that the toddler and run-about did not have our official concern. “But all this is changing now. The ‘No Man’s Land’ is beginning to look like a frontier settlement. Outposts have been established; surveyors are on the ground; there is every indication that the health and development of pre-school children are coming under systematic social control.” FOR RESULTS—Try a Plain Dealer Want-ad. LACK OF SKILLED HELP CLOSES MINES BIRMINGHAM, Oct. 23.—The Aldrich (Ala.) bituminous mines of the Montevallo Mining Co., are to be closed down indefinitely because of inability to secure competent skilled labor. The company went into bankruptcy several months ago, and has since operated under a trusteeship using a large number of convict miners leased from the state. The inferior convict labor was unable to operate the modern machinery used in the mines, according to the truite. RICH PLATINUM DEPOSIT FOUND LARAMIE, Wyo., Oct. 23.—Mining men here are agog over the recent discovery of platinum ore neat Centennial in an ancient copper prospect at which Jacob Schnitzler, veteran prospector, has been scratching away for many years. As platinum is worth $116 an ounce, the search for gold has well-nigh been forgotten by the lean and patient mountain men who have been searching for that metal since Laramie was a tent city on bison-dotted plains. GIRLS' TEN-YEAR ABSENCE MYSTERY NEWCASTLE, Ind, Oct. 23—With the filing of a notice of final settlement of her estate here, the strange case of Catherine Winters is believed ended for all time—an unsolved mystery. How, in midday, a nine-year-old schoolgirl could disappear without the slightest trace of her ever being found, is a mystery which has puzzled residents of this locality for a decade. Mysterious disappearances in big cities are so frequent now that they attract only passing interest, but events of similar character in smaller communities are not soon forgotten. On a March day in 1913 Catherine was last seen. A search began within a few hours, lasted for days and finally for years. Hope upon books of a fond parent, Dr. Winter, shattered as various theories and supposedly bona fide clues were run down and found valueless. The last time Catherine Winters was "found" was when a married woman living in Ohio, who could not recall circumstances of her early history clearly, came to Newcastle thinking perhaps she might be the long-lost girl. Her age and a few points tallied, but other circumstances indicated clearly that she was not Catherine Winters. That was early in the present year. Dr. Winter spent a fortune and dissipated his health and his practice as a dentist going from state to state looking for his missing daughter. Finally the girl was declared legally dead and Thomas R. Millikin appointed administrator of her estate to take care of her share of some property of her grandparents. Millikin died, and his son was named to succeed him. The son filed the papers with the court, and the newspapers here published the notice, writing finis to the story. PILOT AND ENGINE SLIGHT DECREASE IN HOME-OWNING RATIO California was one of 31 states in the Union in which the percentage of families owning their homes showed a decrease during the period from 1900 to 1920, according to a pamphlet "How to Own Your Home," which has been issued as a handbook for prospective homeowners by the department of commerce. In 1900 the percentage of families in California owning homes comprised 46 per cent, and in 1920 this had dropped to 43.7 per cent, compared with 47.9 per cent for the three Pacific states. In spite of this, however, the Pacific states ranked fourth in 1920 in home ownership and above the average for the entire country, which was 45.6 per cent. This means that out of every 1000 families living in California in 1920, 437 owned their homes. For RESULTS use The Plain Dealer. PILOT AND ENGINE IN WING OF PLANE LONDON, Oct. 23.—An aeroplane with no body, in which the pilot and engine are carried in the wing, and which is capable of four miles a minute, is stated to be under construction in England. The wing is of exceptional depth, and the only portion of the driving mechanism visible will be the propeller. SWISS "NIAGARA FALLS" GENEVA, Oct. 23.—A new Niagara Falls is being built in the Alps at an altitude of over '6000 feet, near Martigny, for the purpose of supplying electrical power to the Swiss Federal railways. The dam will be the same height as that at Niagara, and an artificial lake of 40,000,000 cubic yards will be formed. Its total cost will be about $12,000,000. FOR RESULTS—Try a Plain Dealer Want-ad.
