Tuesday, October 23, 1923 CHARGE POLICE WITH GIRLS' TROUBLE Los ANGELES, Oct. 23.—Seven members of the Long Beach police department, accused of contributing to the delinquency of Clara Shipp, 17, and Velma Chambers, 15, of the beach city, were to be given a hearing before Judge Hahn today. The accused officers are: Frank G. Henderson, George M. Shuffield, Otto Faulkner, James H. Lliston, Charles F. Gutrow, Asa Randall Cone and George T. Brown. Charges against the officers were filed following stories told by the two girls that they had been taken on numerous "petting parties" and that in some instances they had been given liquor. Investigation into the officers' actions was further complicated by the charges of J. A. Muir, former member of the Long Beach police department, who stated he had been released from the police force when he complained about the actions of the other officers. DENVER JUDGE WILL DEFY GRAND JURY DENVER, Oct. 23. — Declaring that he would go to jail rather than divulge confidences revealed to him by high school girls and other youngwomen, Ben Lindsey, famous juvenile court judge, issued an open letter to the Denver county grand jury today before which he has been summoned. Judge Lindsay was subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury following a statement by him that "illegal operations by physicians had cut Denver's birth rate in two." "I have every respect for the purpose of the grand jury in summoning me to testify as to what I know about illegal operations," Judge Lindsay said. "I believe there were 1000 such operations in Denver last year and at least 1,000,000 in the United States. But I shall refuse to tell the grand jury anything that I know that has come to me in the hundreds of confidences received from women and girls who come to this office for help." 6282 SINN FEIN ON HUNGER STRIKE DUBLIN, Oct. 23. — Republican headquarters issued a statement this afternoon claiming there are 6,282 Sinn Fein prisoners on hunger strike in Free State jails.
