Y., Oct. 20.—The claim of an Oklahoma official to the honor of being the oldest man in the country to become a father is successfully disputed by Hiram Dutcher, 78, of this city. The Oklahoma claimant, Frank Vore, county commissioner of Muskogee county, is only 70. Dutcher is the proud father of a lusty son, Desmond George Erwin Dutcher, 8 months’ old. Dutcher has other claims to notice. He is a veteran of the civil war, who boasts he can walk, run, jump and box with the same zezt as when he was a boy of 20. Dutcher has no intention of challenging Jack Dempsey, but he does think he could hold his own at scientific sparring with some of the men who think they can box. Dutcher went out with the old 184th regiment and was with the sixth army corps at Shenandoah when Sheridan made his famous ride to snatch victory from defeat. Dutcher was married before and has two children by his first marriage, the oldest now being 56. The present Mrs. Dutcher was Gladys Griffith, an English girl and a former resident of Canada. Finding her cattle—and herself—without shelter, and no food stocks available anywhere in her district, she decided on removing her cattle to her son's ranch in Bechuanaland, 400 miles distant. Many of the water holes she found during the journey had been dried up; some of the districts through which the trek had to be made were infested with lions, and on several occasions Mrs. Francis had to ward off attacks with her rifle.
