ZEV MUST DISPLAY HIS STUFF TODAY
(By Davis J. Walsh)
(I. N. S. Sports Editor)
NEW YORK, Oct. 19.—After Zev, star three-year-old of the Sinclair string, about whose ability to race there is some suspicion, has been galloped five furlongs at Belmont Park, decision will be made some time today by his trainer, Sam Hilbreth, as to whether he will be sent to the post or withdrawn from the $100,000 match race with Papyrus, English champion, tomorrow.
This is declared by prominent horsemen here to be the latest deof My Own to Belmont in the role development behind the summoning of My Own to Belmont in the role of possible substitute.
Everything will be done to dissipate the fact that Zev's fitness was ever doubted, provided, of course, the colt satisfies Hilbreth of his fitness.
This is borne out by a statement by A. J. Fitzgerald, representative of August Belmont. He referred to the hurry call for My Own as merely a precautionary measure in fear of a last minute accident to Zev. He failed to make plain, however, why this commendable spirit of caution did not manifest itself until two days before the race, necessitating a hasty shipment of My Own and imposing obvious handicaps on the Grayson colt.
The latter, in fact, could not leave Laurel until 9 o'clock this morning according to Admiral Grayson's statement from Washington. No time was available for a last workout.
However, the Jockey Club committee continued to depreciate the possibilities of an eleventh hour substitution and this is taken to mean

FOOTBALL SEASON ON HERE SATURDAY
All is excitement at Anaheim H. S. in football circles over the first league game with Huntington Beach tomorrow on the home grid. Last minute practice was given the boys this evening by Coach Pitzmorris. The boys are in the best shape possible and will show their wares tomorrow. Coach Pitzmorris is confident of a victory unless the visitors spring a surprise on the locals. Their team is not considered as strong as last year according to outside dope and Anaheim should have no trouble defeating them to a pretty tune.
Harry Tipton, caretaker of the campus, has worked the field into one of the fastest in the south.
Wells, the starter player, was put thru a strong test and is considered in better shape than ever. The weak spots in the games have been strengthened and everything is in A-1 condition for the opening battle of the season.
The game will be called at 2:30.
August Belmont, speaking for the Jockey club, announced that no decision will be made as to whether Zev or My Own would be named as the American horse in the international match race, until My Own arrives from Laurel, Md.
The announcement was made after a long consultation, following Zev's胜利.

this commendable spirit of caution did not manifest itself until two days before the race, necessitating a hasty shipment of My Own and imposing obvious handicaps on the Grayson colt.
The latter, in fact, could not leave Laurel until 9 o'clock this morning according to Admiral Grayson's statement from Washington. No time was available for a last workout.
However, the Jockey Club committee continued to depreciate the possibilities of an eleventh hour substitution and this is taken to mean that Zev will run in the race if he is at all fit.
But rumors are all to the contrary. Racing men of undoubted reputation declared this morning that a substitution is almost inevitable. They base their prediction as much upon Zev's condition as the fact that Papyrus proved yesterday that he was a horse worthy of the best, beating Zev's time for both the mile and mile and an eighth distances.
The odds, in consequence of rumors, have gone to short money on the English horse, but have held reasonably firm in view of the fact that wet weather is expected tomorrow and a heavy track will be quite to Zev's liking. The race, it was announced, will be held as scheduled, regardless of weather conditions.
Meantime, the Jockey Club committee has come into an immoderate amount of criticism for its handling of the affair. It named Zev over My Own without a trial between the pair, in spite of the belief in some quarters that the Grayson colt was the better horse at a mile and a half. Then the committee is charged with further bungling, in not having My Own on the ground earlier when suspicion was cast over Zev's fitness as long ago as last Sunday.
BELMONT, NEW YORK, Oct. 19. At 10:20 o'clock this morning Major August Belmont, speaking for the Jockey club, announced that no decision will be made as to whether Zev or My Own would be named as the American horse in the international match race, until My Own arrives from Laurel, Md.
The announcement was made after a long consultation, following Zev's half mile workout at Belmont Park this morning.
Major Belmont added that My Own was not expected in his special car until 4:45 o'clock this afternoon.
Major Belmont said that he was using every influence to have My Own's car attached to a fast train so that the colt will arrive here earlier than the original hour set. When the colt arrives, Major Belmont said, the Jockey club committee will give him a careful inspection and then make known its decision.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 19.—Admiral Cary T. Grayson's three year old "My Own" left the Laurel track at 8:30 this morning on a special train for Belmont Park.
Admiral Grayson said he did not know whether his horse would be substituted for Zev at the last minute to race the English horse Papyrus.
"All I know" said the admiral, "is that August Belmont and other officials of the Jockey Club requested me to have My Own at Belmont this afternoon if possible. They secured the train and made the arrangements."
Admiral Grayson will follow the horse to Belmont today. The work of loading the horse was accomplished under the direction of William H. Broks, trainer, and a retinue of helpers, who accompanied the horse.

BERLIN RECALLS GEN. VON LOSSOW (By S. D. Weyer)
(L. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
BERLIN, Oct. 19.—The Berlin government today recalled General Von Lossow, commander of the reichswehr in Bavaria, who has been unable to assert state authority over Dr. Von Kahr, the Bavarian premier and dictator.
Altho federal authority was vested in General Von Lossow, he was incapable of enforcing his demands in Bavaria, being defied by the various branches of the nationalist party.
In view of the continued conflict of authority in Saxony and Bavaria, the national government was faced with the choice of either cancelling the state-wide state of emergency altogether or carrying out a stern military program everywhere.
Socialist ministers urged cancellation but a majority of the cabinet decided upon a less drastic course.
A supreme test faced Minister of defense Gessler today: Either to snow merciless non-partisanship, if he wishes to establish himself an absolute dictator), or relent in his authority. But he found himself in a most difficult position owing to the conflicting political interests. The reds in Saxony are demanding communion while the nationalists in Bavaria are demanding monarchy. It seemed impossible for the national dictator to avoid taking one side or the other to keep the federal state intact.
It is no secret that the nationalists want Bavaria to supplant Prussia as the dominant power in Germany. On the other hand, the communist leaders in Saxony, some of whom are members of the government, demand red rule throut Germany.
The followers of Dr. Hitler, leader of the Bavarian nationalists (Fasciati) contend that Bavaria is the only state in the country that is peaceful and orderly. They assert that there is no object to this.
Developments Today In German Troubles
Bavaria, which is monarchistic in sympathy, has virtually broken off relations with red Saxony, refusing to receive new Saxon envoy.
General Von Lossow, commander of the reichswehr in Bavaria, has been recalled, owing to his inability to asset federal authority over that of the Bavarian state.
Dr. Hans Dorten, leader of the Rhineland cessionists, declared the time is almost to proclaim a Rhenish republic absolutely independent of Germany. He predicts Red disorders throngt Germany followed by reactionary violence.
Altho the German situation is tense, there were few reports of mob violence today.
REBUKES DUMONT
ST. LOUIS, Oct. 19.—David Lloyd George in a public speech here this afternoon sharply rebuked Georges Dumont, attache of the French embassy, who in an address here yesterday made allusions to England and hoped France would be delivered from its "friends."
What is the object of this gallant officer's statement? England's former premier asked.
They know the movement which I started is backed by three fourths of the population. The Centrists are trying to steal my thunder.
"My original plan was to make the Rhineland autonomous, keeping it a part of the German state, but in the meaning I was persuaded that the Reich was Prussianized to such an extent that it is imperative that the Rhineland be freed, not attached in any way to Germany."
The correspondent asked:
"Do you intend to realize your aims by force?"
"If possible we will avoid use of..."
CONFERENCES OPEN
PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 19.—The Pacific coast and northwest conference football season officially opened today with Idaho facing Washington State College at Pullman and the University of Oregon meeting Whitman College on the neutral roundup park grounds at Pendleton.
Coach Matthews' Vandal eleven from Moscow is given the edge over W.S.C. all three many predicted the Cougars would show a decided improvement since their defeat by Gonzaga last Saturday at Spokane.
Idaho—a fast, hard charging, scrapy team—is the dark horse of the northwest conference, and according to dopesters, is a team to be feared by all opponents.
Dregon is a big favorite over Whitman, due to weight and its experienced back field combination of Chapman, Latham and Sax and the flashy sophomore Terjeson.
The Missionaries, however, are primed for the contest and hope to hold Oregon to a low score.
SEPARATE ANSWERS
Separate answers of a like sort were filed today by Marie-Louise Amstutz and Louise Royer to the complaint in intervention made by Marie Feraud in the case of their suits against the Anaheim Investment Co. et al. Marie Feraud intervenor.
The former, who is the daughter of the late General Julian D. Royer denies that the jury which set aside the alleged will of the general did so by a vote of nine to three, and asserts that the vote was unanimous; denies that Miss Feraud is financially interested in the property, or that the late General Royer bequeathed her 975 shares of Anaheim Investment Co. stock that Miss Feraud owns or ever owned 250 shares of the stock or that Max Royer acted with fraudulent intent in filing a petition for special letters of administration. Finally both women ask that the complaint in intervention be dismissed.
PROBE BEATING OF L. A. JAIL INMATES
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19.—In an effort to substantiate or explode rumors that the beating administered by inmates of the county jail Wednesday to the two suspended Long Beach officers jailed on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, was the result of a "frame up" between prisoners and jail officials, the district attorney's office today launched an exhaustive investigation.
The victims of the attack, F. G. Henderson and O. Faulkner, two of the seven policemen arrested for indulging in asserted joy rides and petting parties with two Long Beach girls, were removed Wednesday.
It is no secret that the nationalists want Bavaria to supplant Prussia as the dominant power in Germany. On the other hand, the communist leaders in Saxony, some of whom are members of the government, demand red rule thrucut Germany.
The followers of Dr. Hitler, leader of the Bavarian nationalists (Fasstii) contend that Bavaria is the only state in the country that is peaceful and orderly. They assert that there is continuous disorder; in Saxony which proves that the nationalist rule is better for Germany than Communism.
Another element of the situation is that Bavaria, being mainly agricultural, is self-supporting, while Saxony, being an industrial state, is suffering from unemployment, high cost of living and industrial unrest.

WIESBADEN, Oct. 19.—"I believe that impending events in occupied territory make possible the establishment of a Rhenish republic at once," said Dr. Hauts Dorten, one of the chief secessionists today.
Dr. Dorten is tall and slender and elegantly dressed. Imposing horn-rimmed spectacles accentuate his intellectual appearance. His study, where the International News Service correspondent was received was littered with French newspapers and magazines.
Asked if it were true that the Rhenish centrist party is backing the independence movement, Dr. Dorten replies:
"Centrists are political realists."

The McInnes Packing Co., of Oranges shipped the last car of valencias for the season last Saturday. This company shipped a total of 545 cars for the season, of which 38 cars were navels.
Every district within a radius of 12 miles of Orange contributed to these shipments and satisfactory prices were realized for the growers.
