Miscellaneous LAURENTIC GOLD SALVAGE FINISHED LONDON, Oct. 19.—With the recovery of practically all of the treasure from the sunken liner Laurentic, the salvage championship between the salvage ship Racer’s eight divers is settled. The championship goes to Seaman "Mickie" Maddison, who has recovered 200 bars of gold, of a total value of over $2,000,000. His nearaest rival, Petty Officer Light, only brought up 170 bars. The Laurentic, which was sunk by mines in 1917, was carrying about $25,000,000 worth of bullion to America, and the Racer has been engaged in salvage operations on her since 1918, with varying success. During the summer of 1922, only $3,000,000 worth of gold bars was recovered in five months, but during the past summer the Racer’s divers have recovered something approaching $11,000,000. Competition among the divers engaged on the wreck has been very keen, but they have had to take turns according to orders and have not been permitted to select their positions. For this reason very often divers have gone weeks without any success coming their way. Maddison owes his pre-eminence largely to a wonderful day, when in two descents to the wreck, each lasting an hour, he secured 43 bars of gold. Salvage operations on the sunken liner will cease at the end of the present month, when the wreckage will be dragged over whether the few remaining bars of gold are lifted or not. Though she lies 20 fathoms deep, the operations have been carried out without a single casualty. BUSINESS MEN TOLD TO WATCH MOROCCO LONDON, Oct. 10.—"Keep an eye on Morocco," is the advice given to British business men by C. G. Hope Gill, British vice-consul at Casablanca. "Morocco," said Gill, "is a country that is developing. All the country around Casablanca is being brought under cultivation. Agriculture, at present, is the backbone of the country, but it is the phosphates that offer the greatest opportunity for development. "The prophate resources of Morocco will last centuries, even if worked at a high rate of production. They are richer than those of Florida and of course can be brought more easily and more cheaply to England and the continent. "The country is being developed and naturally therefore is bound to give opportunities for the judicious use of capital."
