MISCELLANEOUS MANY URGED FOR POLITICAL PLUMS WASHINGTON, Oct. 8.—The naming of new American ambassadors to Great Britain and Italy became President Coolidge's paramount task today, with Republican leaders closely watching the disposition of his first great patronage problem. With two of the nation's biggest "political plums" in his possession, the President faced a difficult feat in keeping party harmony while naming successors to George Harvey at London and Richard Washburn Child at Rome. A virtual flood of messages has reached the White House with endorsement of "favorite sons" for the two important diplomatic posts. The name of Elthu Root, once secretary of state and a former senator from New York, and of Henry P. Fletcher, now ambassador to Belgium, were added today to an already long list of eligibles. These two noted Republicans, together with John Hays Hammond, chairman of the U.S. Coal Commission, were reported to have the "inside track" for the appointment to the court of St. James. Former Senator Frank B. Kellogg of Minnesota, Charles B. Warren, former ambassador to Japan, and William M. Collier, now ambassador to Chile, were said to be "favored" for the appointment to Rome. Some surprise was expressed here at the manner in which the resignation of Harvey and Child became public. Their resignations were known for months prior to the "official family," but the President had expressly asked his friends to keep the matter secret until after he decided upon their successors. The Chinese Value Native Forests WASHINGTON, Oct. 6.—While America is using more lumber annually than it is producing and ignoring the pressing need of reforestation, the Chinese have recognized the value of reforesting and are applying the principle according to advice received by the department of commerce. The Shansi government has inaugurated a bureau of forestry with six branches and tree planting on government land is going on steadily. In addition private land owners are also planting trees on all available land. It is estimated, the report states, over 100,000,000 trees are being planted annually. The Shansi government hopes to reforest some 30,000,000 acres of land. FREIGHT FIGURES ARE INTERESTING In putting 44,285 cars in safe and sanitary condition to receive merchandise, the freight department of the Union Pacific System at Salt Lake City extracted 29,743 pounds of nails during 1922, averaging one and one-half pounds of nails for every car. This precaution proves beneficial in averting damage to shipments, and in the sale of salvaged nails. These and other interesting sidelights on modern methods of handling freight are found in the current issue of The Union Pacific Magazine in an article by John C. Green, under the caption, "Is the Freight Handler Coming Into His Own?" sudden publication of the resignations has led to rumors of a "leak" which greatly displeased the executive. Loma Vista Memorial Park Cemetery ESTABLISHED 1914 Some surprise was expressed here at the manner in which the resignation of Harvey and Child became public. Their resignations were known for months just to the "official family," but the President had expressly asked his friends to keep the matter secret until after he decided upon their successors. They thought they could go to New York and have a smash of a time with $1.36. The three youngsters are safely home now, after having their pilgrimage spoiled before it had got very much of a bad start. They scrambled aboard an elevated train in a North Side suburb and came to Chicago to take a train for New York. The journey was frustrated when they inquired of a policeman at a railroad station which was "the best track to go to New York." The policeman sent them and their baggage home again. The baggage of the Pettigrew children consisted of several articles of clothing stained into a pillow slip. The Backus wanderer was a little more pretentious, carrying her effects in a small handbag. "We wanted to go see daddy," the Pettigrew girls explained. Daddy was on a business trip to New York. Hours: 11 to 4 and 7 to 8 OFFICE 412 SPURGEON BLDG. SANTA ANA. M.
