PORTLAND, Oct. 6. — American public school education faces a social crisis as a result of the "subtle influence" of reactionary forces, a special committee on education of the American Federation of Labor charged today in filing a report to the national convention here. Condemning the "old-fashioned methods" used in most schools to teach social science and economics, the committee warned that "selfish interests were striking at the very heart of successful democracy" by use of educational propaganda. The report was based on a lengthy investigation of schools, text-books and curricula. The committee charged that the propagandists were "menacing the moral freedom of teachers and warring the minds of conventions for spreading propaganda, and named a list of them. The committee's survey covered 6,624 schools, attended by 1,183,058 students. Of these schools, the committee stated, 86 per cent had the courses in current events, but only 57 per cent in modern civics, and less than 29 per cent in modern economics. This condition was cited as leading to "disastrous results to American education." "Selfish interests are seeking to use the public schools for propaganda purposes; are attempting an indefensible censorship of the utterances of teachers, and are undermining the dignity and independence of the teaching profession," the report stated. "Such activities strike at the very heart of successful democracy and tend to tear down the usefulness of the structure of public education within the members of organized labor, in common with other public-spirited citizens, have striven to build up. STOKES TO RETURN TO FIGHT CHARGES CHICAGO, Oct. 6. — W. E. D. Stokes, New York hotel and traction magnate, was expected to arrive from New York today or Sunday to face indictments returned against him and six alleged associates by the grand jury here yesterday. The aged multi-millionaire, with Daniel Nugent, his attorney, and five others, were charged with a blanket indictment with conspiring to defame the character of Mrs. Helen Elwood Stokes against whom the magistrate has brot suit for divorce. Mrs. Stokes told the grand jury her husband had attempted to secure evidence charging her with being a former inmate of the Everleigh Club, a Chicago resort, internationally notorious 15 years ago. Stokes and his agent, prior to leaving New York, furnished a surprise when they announced they would go to Chicago and fight the charges against them. It had been that they would resist extradition. THOUSANDS VISIT STONE MONUMENT ATLANTA, Oct. 6. — Indicating the widespread interest manifested in the gigantic statue which is being carved in Stone Mountain, near here, 12,534 visitors, representing 42 states in the Union and 11 foreign countries, registered their names in the visitors' tablet during August. This number represents only about one-third of the total number visiting the mountain during that month, according to the executive committee of the Stone Mountain Monumental association. A huge memorial is being carved on one side of the mountain under the direction of Gutzon Borglum, noted sculptor. Since the registration book was opened, June 1, visitors have come from all sections of the world to watch him work. Spectators sur- NEW TO BABY GRANDE Species For five days only terms. Milk and dairy products have now become an important factor in international trade through the employment of modern refrigerating and transportation facilities, Dr. H. C. Taylor, chief of the bureau of agricultural economics, U.S. department of agriculture, declared today in an address before the second session of the world's dairy congress. Taylor predicted that international trading in milk products will in course of time replace to a degree the national and local economy systems of seasonal storage. "Dairy production has now become thoroughly established in the northern and southern hemispheres, and as at consequence mutually advantageous seasonal trading between countries is now a possibility, to replace to a degree the system of seasonal storage that grows out of a local or national economy system. "More than 20 billion pounds of milk were required during the past year to produce the milk products that entered into world trade, as against five billion pounds some few years ago."
