FARMER IN BETTER FINANCIAL POSITION (By W. H. Atkinson) (I. N. S. Staff Correspondent) WASHINGTON, Oct. 4.—The farmer is in better financial position than last year, despite rumors of agricultural discontent and the farmers' dollar has steadily increased in purchasing power, the federal reserve board declared today. The board, studying conditions in the farm regions, found credit needs are being fully met by local banks supplemented with the reserve system's facilities. The improved position of the farmers, the board said, is due mainly to the larger buying power of domestic consumers. Larger earnings and fuller employment of industrial workers has brot increased demand for farm products. Increased domestic demand has been enough, the board said, to offset the unsatisfactory phase of the foreign market for American products. The board's survey disclosed that the net returns of the farmers had been adversely affected by higher costs of labor, fertilizer and materials. Advancing in the prices of many farm products has not been accompanied by a corresponding increase in retail prices, and from this situation the farms have been benefitted. "Crop prices are, on the average, considerably higher than last year," the board said. "Recent advances of prices occurred during the period when the farmer markets his crops." Bankers reported that banks in the agricultural districts are now meeting additional demands for credit for crop marketing purposes thru the use of funds released by liquidation of loans made during the growing season and through increased accommodation at federal reserve banks. Banks in the farm regions were reported in a stronger position to meet demands for loans. In some agricultural districts bankers are meeting credit demands from farmers by reducing their balance carried with bank correspondents in financial centers. Bank loans to industry are nearly $1,000,000,000 larger than a year ago, the board said. JOURNALISTS INTEREST INCREASES IN BIG WILDCATS Interest in two of the most important wildcat wells now drilling in So. Calif., increases with the assurance that development is going ahead on both wells. It is understood that the matter of casing trouble on the Artesia well has been adjusted and that the drilling will proceed. The Artesia well is some 4600 feet deep and has some very encouraging showings. Drilling and development work at complete the well as soon as possible. Bellflower has resumed, the understanding being that W. M. Keck will be an official of the Calpetro Oil Syndicate is authority for the statement that the Star Petroleum Company will offset the Calpetro well. This would not indicate that the Keck interests had quit the field as reported a few weeks ago. Core samples and indications made the Bellflower well one of the most interesting wells now drilling. In the Bandini district it is believed the Oakridge Oil Company has something worthwhile in the Rosel well and that a pleasant surprise will be sprung soon. Should the Oakridge have an oil well it will start much new development and open up an area that has been considered oil bearing for a number of years. The Consolidated Mutual's test well drilling at close to 5000 feet has had this past week some of its best showings and there seems to be a possibility of opening up a deep sand. The Interstate Oil Corporation the pioneer developers of the old Newport field makes the announcement that a deep test well will be drilled on the Norris property and determine whether or not this field has a deep sand. TO SEEK NEW SITE The "big fight" at the adjourned meeting of Fullerton trustees last night held for the purpose of consider ing the complaint of the citi zens of East Commonwealth ave., against the alleged nuisance of the Los Angeles Paving Co. plant in that vicinity resulted in the board issuing an order to the Having Co. to "get out," and be only two days about it. It is said that the paving company now has the base laid for a few blocks of paving, and were given two days in order to put the crown on this paving, and then they must move. E. R. Werdin manager of the paving company, raised no objection against the orders of the board, but said that he was ready and anxious to get out. A site has been obtain ed in the new industrial site west of town. The only other business brot before the board at the adjourned meeting, it is said, was the new license ordinance, which was passed.
