Saturday, September 29th, 1923 WESTERN AUTO STORE OPENS DOORS HERE The Anaheim branch of the Western Auto Supply Co. will take its place today as an important link in the mighty chain of 75 stores now operated by this company that binds the automotive west. With the Western Auto store comes "Saving Sam," the little trade character well known to auto owners up and down the Pacific coast and who symbolizes the policy of the Western Auto Supply Co.—that of "saving and service with a smile." Like a romantic tale, the story is unfolded of how George Pepperdine grew from a bookkeeper with five dollars in his pocket and an idea in his head to be president of an organization, the largest of its kind in the entire world—the Western Auto Supply Co. Fourteen years have elapsed since Pepperdine left his desk in that little garage in Kansas City with the determination that he would give the public something they wanted and needed, making good every claim he has made for the merchandise he sold. Never once has he failed to live up to those ideals. His success is evidenced by the growth of his organization—that of having over 75 stores, completely covering the west. K. M. Brown, the manager of this newest Western Auto store, is enthusiastic in his belief of the wonderful success his business will receive in Anaheim. "Satisfactorily meeting the needs of car owners for supplies and equipment of quality at minimum prices and the maximum of service is the foundation upon which our business has been built," says Brown. "Emphasis is placed upon the personal element because service to the automobile owner is one of the main functions of our company," concluded Brown. Brown and his right-hand man, Lappert, were formerly of the Santa Ana store before they came to Anaheim to assume charge of this store. They invite all motorists to come in and get acquainted with "Saving Sam" and auto supply headquarters. SHIP 148 CARS OF TIRES ETC. IN MONTH The progress being made by the big factory of SHIP 148 CARS OF TIRES ETC. IN MONTH The progress being made by the big factories of Goodyear in Los Angeles has been brought forebly to the attention of this community by the statement of W. C. Case, traffic manager of the California company to the effect that during August the track facilities at the plant were taxed to the utmost. "During the entire month of August," says Case, "148 cars were handled outgoing, with finished product destined for the 10 branches of the company here in the west, exclusive of the Los Angeles branch, while 130 cars of materials and supplies came into our yards. In addition, the traffic department also shipped enough Goodyear tires and tubes to Southern California points to fill 27 additional cars. "The grand total of tires shipped during the month to dealers and car manufacturers amounted to 125,000, or an average of 5060 every working day." County Auto Show Is Well Arranged The auto show given in conection with the seventh annual Orange County Fair at Santa Ana is arranged much more conveniently than the similar show last year. Cars are not crowded together, and the pedestrian can view the models more readily. The combined exhibit of Dodge cars, in which Charles H. Mann of Anaheim participates, is a feature. So is the exhibit of Moreland trucks, which are becoming so popular in the south. A tiny Chevrolet toy car, said to be the real thing in miniature, is a feature of the Chevrolet booth. The exhibit is under the auspices of the Orange County Auto Trades association. GREAT VARIETIES OF FISH FOUND MANILA, Sept. 28 — Fish that climb trees, fish that live on land and grown in water, full-grown fish so small that 10,000 of them make a light breakfast for the natives who catch them, and fish whose males hatch and bring up the young are aming the strange and rare varieties of the finny tribe that inhabit Philippine waters described by Dr. Albert Horre, fish expert of the Philippines bureau of science, before the American chamber of commerce recently. What is considered by scientists the most unique fish in existence is the so-called shrimp fish found in Philippine waters. It is perfectly transparent, its skin being like celluloid, and its fins are placed where its head and tail should be. Sharks are found in abundance in Philippine waters, the tiger shark, or man-eating variety, inhabiting Manila bay. Sharks 70 feet long and thick in proportion, are caught in the southern islands. Very few people know that most of the world's commercial cod liver oil is really shark liver oil. It has also been recently discovered that the liver of the Philippine shark will yield a substance used to manufacture the new diabetes cure, insulin. INDIVIDUAL HOME OWNERS ESSENTIAL WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 — The maintenance of a high percentage of individual home owners is "one of the searching tests that now challenges the people of the United States," Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover declared today in issuing a government manual in connection with the "own your own home" campaign of the department of commerce. Secretary Hoover expressed the belief that business groups are looking at home-owning in a new and more favorable light. "They see that taking a neighborly interest in developing sound fiancing and other machinery for the use of homeseekers and insisting on the observance of honest, straight forward methods by those who deal with home seekers is not paternalism, but good business and good citizenship," he said. "It is the 'square deal' and it is not only right but essential that the cards should not be stacked against the homeseekers." "Buying or building a home requires the use of sound judgment in seeing that the personal needs of the family are best met with funds available. It involves not only the carrying on of transactions of financing and buying or building, but it involves the proper determination of location with respect to school, to work and neighbors. "Each home owner takes pride in it, maintains it better, and has a more wholesome, healthful and happy atmosphere in which to bring up children." "The home owner has a constructive aim in life. He works harder outside his home, spends his leisure hours more profitably, and he and his family live a finer life and enjoy more of the comforts and cultivating influences of your modern civilization." Eriksen, who recently closed a series of meetings in the Christian tabernacle here, writes friends that he is carrying on a successful religious campaign in a city north of Sacramento, thus putting route to the report current in Anaheim a day or two ago that he had been stained by shooting. LIGHT TESTING STATIONS RUSHED Up to Thursday noon A. Bevillard had tested 300 pairs of headlights in five days of operation. The Anselmo Ignition Depot has been jammed with cars a large part of the time. This is only repeating Bevillard's former record, when he tested hundreds of cars under the supervision of the California Auto Trade association. All of the local stations have been busy testing or checking up on the lights, including Robert V. Jenten, Harry D. Riley, West Brom, George Ennis, the Eside Service Station, which has been named one of the official stations, L. H. McKee, Westinghouse battery distributor, etc. The car owner who has had his lights thoroughly adjusted in the past six months or longer is race, and an outfit in perfect conformity with the new law still rarer. Already an improvement on the highways has been noted in the way of fewer glaring headlights. FOR RESULTS—Try a Plain Dealer Want-ad.
