MYSTERY DEEPENS IN CHARRED BODY
STOCKTON, Sept. 29.—The mystery of the supposed death of Alex Kels, well to do cattle dealer, deepened today with admission of authority that the question of whether the charred body found in an auto on the Woodson ranch, near Lodi, Sept. 13, was that of Kels or another man, may never be answered.
The body was buried as that of Kels. He was believed to have been lured to the spot, robbed and murdered. Then an autopsy performed raised doubt as to the identity of the body. However, it was burned beyond recognition and it was admitted today by authorities that unless some evidence of positive nature that Kels is alive is uncovered it will be impossible to say that the charred body is not that of the cattle dealer.
Mrs. Kels has been paid $70,000 insurance carried by her husband. His business affairs have been found in good shape and no motive has been found for attempted deception in connection with the case.
"We are investigating rumors that Kels is not dead," Deputy District Attorney M. G. Woodward said today.
"We have no direct evidence that he is alive. There have been reports and clues which we are following up but this is just one of the several theories in connection with the finding of the body supposed to be that of Kels. Unless we can establish in some manner that Kels is alive we have no evidence sufficiently strong to prove that the body found on the Woodson ranch is not that of the cattleman."
According to neighbors, two automobiles drove up to the place at which the body was later found. One departed at high speed after shots had been heard. When neighbors arrived on the scene they found the remaining machine backed against a burning hay stack. They were unable to rescue the crumpled body in the rear seat.
Market Reports
STOCKS CLOSE IRREGULAR
NEW YORK, Sept. 29.—The stock market closed irregularly. Stocks encountered a good bit of selling in the short session of trading, which carried some issues down 1 to nearly 5 points, a few of them reaching new low records for the year. Toward the close of the market the tone turned irregular.
Motors, tires, accessories and some of the independent steels were heavily sold, new lews for the year being made in the early dealings by Studebaker and Kelly-Springfield tires.
With the exception of Sinclair oil, which was fractionally higher, and Pan-American Petro., which was up one point to 55, the oil list was heavy.
Steels and rail were irregular.
Government bonds unchanged; railway and other bonds were heavy.
Stock sales today 326,200 shares; bonds $3,831,000.
Stock sales for the week 3,638,200 shares; bonds $42,863,000.
GRAIN SLUMPS
CIHCAGO, Sept. 29.—Grain slumped to a low stage today, selling activities, indicating that the market had been heavily overbought. News was without feature and proposed government aid to wheat growers failed of the stimulating effect shown previously.
Wheat closed ½% to 2¼c off. Corn was off %c to 2¼c and Oats %c to 1⅓c.
Provisions held steady in the face of the grain slump.

ENGINE DROPS FROM FERRY INTO WATER
PORT COSTA, Sept. 29. As the engine drawing the Oregonian, track Shasta route train from San Francisco to Portland, pulled on the slip at the Carquines Straits ferry today, the slip gave way, allowing one end of the engine to drop into the water.
The train was moved onto the ferry by another track without delay. No one was injured.

Who are the people that have made their money in the oil game in So. Calif? It is true some have made a few dollars in buying stock, but the ones who have made the money are largely those who have gone in and bought land, where the values were not much in excess of that for agricultural purposes, and where the oil indications were favorable and where some reliable company was putting down a well. I happen to have 5, 10 and 20 acres in the new Cypress field at reasonable prices, but they will not last long. Is it necessary to say more?
