SECOND SECTION
TWENTY-SIXTH YEAR
HALT DRILLING UNTIL FIELD PROVEN
Drilling on gageage or unimproved property, but not on city lots until the territory is proven. This was the attitude of the majority of C. of C. directors last night. The consensus of opinion of both the chamber and the city council, which met in separate session, was that the proposed ordinance be put over for a week more, pending more thoro consideration.
Leonard Evans, speaking for the minority, declared that "the greatest future of a city lies in the development of a residential district. Anaheim has this future before it, and it seems that it would be a mistake to spoil it with the invasion of an industry that is more or less speculative, while the residential and civic growth of the city is sure."
Dr. Herbert Johnston led the majority opinion and stated the position outlined above. He also pointed out manages of retaining the residual character of the city, which
The Plain Dealer:
No matter how cosmopolitan we may have become, no matter what our business or occupation may be, or how successful we are—and although our home may be the most beautiful one in the world to us, still, at times, we all feel the need of a change to break the monotony of living. It is this longing for a change, a wish for something different, that crowds our beaches and fills our national parks, summer resorts and camping grounds every summer. It sends thousands to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park, Yosemite valley, and other wonder spots of the world. It is a longing for romance and unknown adventures that makes explorers of us all in a limited way. It is a craving that must somehow be satisfied before we are happy.
There are so many places that we don't know where to go, so we pick and choose until the process becomes perfectly maddening; then we choose the wrong place. We have pulled the same stunt every year regularly.
Now, I am going to suggest a way to settle it for you. Wouldn't you like to have a private wonderland of your own—just yourself and a few good fellows? Sure, you would. Of course, you could go to any one of the so-called national playgrounds, but everybody's doing it—and that's just the point—it is overdone. May you be like I am. I prefer my door sports to the just like your come true.
And say, listen near your own drive from Los Angeles that, you would selfes—no trespass needed, for the inaccessible at park be kept so, except club.
This place I am is something rainy way—a really and that can be made through the boring of tunnel in the walls which lock ing world, and that of a few hundred the tunnel site. The view taken by the C. of C. was practically that of the city council.
City Manager O. E. Steward presented a map outlining the proposed zone. It would keep derricks back 250 feet from subdivisions where improvements had been made, but would permit drilling on practically all ranch property. Council filed a petition signed by about a dozen ranchers asking to be included in the territory where drilling is permitted.

—just like your boyhood dreams come true.
And say, listen, it is near, very near your own home—three hours' drive from Los Angeles. Bealdes that, you would have it all to yourselves—no trespass signs would be needed, for the place is absolutely inaccessible at present, and could be kept so, except to members of the club.
This place I am telling you about is something rather unique in its way—a really and truly loat canyon that can be made accessible only through the boring of nearly 100 feet of tunnel in the massive granite walls which lock it out from a prying world, and through the building of a few hundred feet of trail up to the tunnel site. It is one of the most picturesque spots in California, or in fact the whole world, and is known to but few people. You may have driven your car within a mile of it and never knew it was there.
Entrance, or rather non-entrance to this canyon is barred also by a magnificent double waterfall, the upper one of which is nearly 200 feet in height and the lower one making a sheer drop of over 100 feet. There is water enough to make one gaze in wonder at its beauty, especially the lower fall, which reminds one of a bridal veil in its virginal white purity; while its volume, especially in the rainy season, would overawe one into a feeling of utter insignificance.

Between the two falls is a natural basin or amphitheatre large enough to contain a clubhouse and grounds. Just imagine it—a veritable hanging garden enclosed by walls covered with moss and ferns, all the luxuriant vegetation of the southland and flowers galore—truly an oriental dream.
Above the upper falls you enter the canyon proper, and it is between two and three miles in length. It cannot be entered from the upper end because of towering cliffs while rise hundreds of feet skyward. However, the canyon is wide enough along the stream on either bank to make progress easy, once you are in it. If this stream were stocked with trout it would make an ideal fishing place and many spots could be found for camping purposes. There is plenty of firewood, also, on the mountains and in the canyon.
The elevation at the falls is about 4500 feet above sea level, with peaks at either side rising to a height of over 7500 feet. This canyon is located on the north side of the main range of mountains so that it gets the most moisture and is always cool and green in summer. It is really an ideal spot, and some day will be one of the show places of California, rivaling Yosemite valley and Sequoia National Park in its primitive grandeur. It could be kept absolutely untrammeled by pleasure-seekers, unspoiled by vandal hordes and unlittered by the tin cans and other refuse usually left displayed promiscuously by the thoughtless multitudes. Do you want to help do it?
There is only one obstacle to be overcome in forming a club—there is a mining claim running across the entrance to the canyon at present, but this difficulty could be easily settled, as I am the owner of the claim. It would be one more safeguard against intrusion by the general public.
All the details of construction, expenditures, cost of membership, etc., could be worked out after the club is formed, and of course would be up to the club members. It could be either as moderate or as expensive as they choose to make it. If I had the capital, I have confidence enough in its feasibility to go ahead and finish the prospect alone, but under the circumstances, must enlist the aid of a limited number of men in order to make my dream come true.
