DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS
I love, and fear not; and I cannot lose
One instant, this great certainty of peace.
Long as God ceases not, I cannot cease
I must arise.
—Helen Hunt Jackson.
Beautiful Pageant Is Instructive
“The Wayfarer,” the beautiful sacred pageant given in Los Angeles and other cities of the country, impresses in wholesome and timely way, the tremendous influence that the Christ spirit is having in drawing mankind after ages of bloody conflicts, toward a well-defined brotherliness. There have been horrible wars, it is true, among Christian nations. But sentiment in these Christian lands is crystallizing strongly against militarism and against resort to arms on slight pretext.
Just as “The Wayfarer,” recalling the prophecies of Scripture referring to the Christ influence, augured that ultimately all nations, kindreds and tongues shall bow the knee to the one true God and shall dwell together in unity and peace, so the various peace movements foreshadow the coming of this Golden Age. And quite fittingly America is foreseen as the leader in this transcendently important movement.
Pageants like “The Wayfarer” exert exemplary influence, in that they stress vividly the beneficient workings of the Christ spirit in the affairs and relations of mankind.

If Europe just would reverse itself—if it would give as much attention, in future, to the fostering of peace as it has given in the past to the fomenting and the prolonging of war, there never would be another World War.

NEW YORK LETTER
The Daughters of the American Revolution have taken a hand in the film business. At least they have cooperated with David W. Griffith to make a patriotic film emphasizing the glory of our independence which their organization commemorates. The title of the film is "America" and it was selected in an ingenious manner. A poll was taken of six universities six grade schools, six clubs, and six sporting places where slang is most prevalent, including a prize fighter's camp, a race track, a pool room, a dance hall and a boy's play ground. More than 90 per cent of t he votes were for "America", with the "Spirit of Senenty-Six" the second choice. The voters are also to be included in the many group scenes in the production.
The rapt attention of a heterogeneous group crowded into the little Comedy Theatre for a performance of "Children of the Moon" by a Chicago business man, Martin Flavin, is a living argument for the alertness of the well tuned American audience to the cord of genuine drama. The Athertons, for three generations have been moon-maid, with the quirk in the male members of the family. A selfish mother in the second generation seizes upon the aberration for her relentless domestic domination to the undoing of her daughter's healthy romance. The honest fire of love ebbs and
DINNER STORIES
When the doctor arrived he found the patient in tears, says the Harvard Lampoon.
"Cheer up, my good man," he said, "you'll pull through all right."
"Tisn't that, Doc," groaned the patient, "but just think of the money I've spent buying apples to keep you away."
The day was chilly, but the boss insisted on having all the windows wide open. The stenographer, whose dress consisted of a pair of shoulder straps alone, made audible protests.
"If you complain about a little cool air now what will you do when winter comes?" the boss inquired.
"I'll get me an inside job then," was the chilling retort.—Judge.
"You should cultivate a forgiving nature," said the kindly club lady.
"I do," answered Senator Sorghum. "I'm obliged to. I'm always willing to forgive a man who didn't vote for me at a recent election if he will change his mind before next one."
The students at the New York University, who are earning their way through college or helping out toward that aid, at least, earned a total of one and a quarter millions dollars last year. The most successful of them made $6,000 serving as a cost accountant in his spare time.
Newport's secret of the summer has trickled into town with the return of the inhabitants. Many were the secret meetings of important men during the idle days. Dire things were suspected, but it develops that it was but a scheme for the extermination of the pestiferous mosquito, and was headed by no less a generalissimo than T. Suffern Tailer.

HAPPY DAYS
Soon you must buy an overcoat;
The next month's rent is due;
You'll have to meet that little note;
And income taxes too.
It's time to lay in winter coal;
The butcher says he'll dun;
You've practically hocked your soul;
Oh boy! Ain't we got fun!
HINTS TO OUR INQUIRING REPORTER
What's the best way to murder the movie fan
Who reads all the captions aloud?
Or the little stenog who starts snapping her gum
In the midst of a street car crowd.
What method of torture is good for the man
Who greets you by slapping your back?
Should the people who borrow your last cigarette
Get the thumbscrews, or galley or rack?
What way can your think of sending your face
Outside when it needs to be shaved?
What can be done with old phonograph needles
That you've conscientiously saved?
If you want to become a millionaire quick
What's the way you'd suggest to begin?
And how, when you grind out a column a day,
Can you manage to keep on a grin?
THE DAYS OF ROMANCE
He longed for the day of forgotten romance,
When ladies were loved and when men fought and bled,
"They have passed on," he sighed, "now there isn't a chance
For adventure" then turns to his afternoon paper and read:
Kid Dropper,famed gangster, was shot at and killed
As he entered a taxi surrounde by cops.
By a youngster unheard of, weak, pale, of slight build,
Who laughed "Watch the Dropper, for here's where he drops
A baby was siezed on a thronged city street,
Twelve thousand policemen in vain sought a clew,
And every false scent and each crushing defeat
Merely served to start going the whole search anew.
Ku Kluxers paraded, and foes of the klan
Gave battle, shots sounded and knife blades flashed bright,
A bullet well aimed brought death to one man.

A spender of New York who scattered his gold
Like dirt, found himself at the ebb of the tide,
Afraid to face poverty when he grew old,
He gave one last party, took poison and died.
He folded his paper in patent disgust
And yawned in his boredom and mournfully said;
"The brave days of romance have crumbled to dust;
Life holds no excitement; adventure is dead."
Recent suicide of a noted Broadway spender on the verge of poverty seems to indicate that occasionally a man about town is a man about down.
Writing of a recent experience in the United States, Sir Phillip Gibbs says that "one lady struck another over the head with a fan." These Britishers certainly are tactful.
THERE'S NO SENSE TO THIS
Out where the buttons seem a little tighter,
Out where the buckle shines a little brighter,
Out where the girth becomes a little longer,
Out where the straining gets a little stronger
That's where the Vest begins.
We don't think much of these moral squibs of advice they hand you in certain magazines and Sunday newspapers. "Always look forward, never backward," is one. Yes, and if you always look forward some auto is going to come up from behind and bump you for a whole cemetery full of tombstones.
