CHARGES FALSE AFFIDAVITS SOUGHT
CHICAGO, Sept. 20. — Subpoenas for 22 persons were issued and an investigation that threatened to reduce society and the underworld to common levels began here today after Mrs. Helen Ellwood Stokes, of New York, told the state's attorney that her millionaire husband had been spending thousands of dollars in an effort to make it appear that she once had been an inmate in a Chicago brothel, famous for its patronage drawn from the ultra-rich.
Mrs. Stokes pleaded with the state's attorney that everything possible be done to spare her children the burning scar of questionable orign, saying:
"I am a defenseless woman fighting alone against a crafty old man with millions behind him."
The answer of State's Attorney Crowe, that began the investigation, was:
"Madame, my instructions to my assistant, Mr. Wharton, are that he leave nothing undone that can be done by my office in getting at the bottom of this thing."
Every effort to speed the inquiry was engaged, because the re-hearing of Mrs. Stokes' divorce case, made necessary by the failure of a judge to sign her separation decree, is scheduled for Oct. 1, in New York.
Squads of detectives were assigned to obtain the records and correspondence of former Assistant State's Attorney Richard E. Westbrook and Edward Altz, reputed to be a private detective in the employ of the husband, Wm. Earl Dodge Stokes, hotel owner and traction magnate.
"For two years," Mrs. Stokes told Crowe, "my husband has been spending thousands of dollars in the underworld of Chicago in an effort to blacken me and disgrace my children. For two years he has been BUENA PARK
BUENA PARK, Sept. 20. (Spl.)—The First Annual Dahlia show given by the Buena Park Woman's club was given at the Masonie Temple on Tuesday. Dahlias of every known species were on exhibit and presented a beautiful sight on the long tables decorated in green and with the beautiful potted plants as a background.
A tea room in one corner of the hall was kept busy serving the dainties to be found there and the candy booth in charge of Mrs. Glenn Crilley soon disposed of all the sweets.
The afternoon program opened with an address of welcome by Mrs. Ralph Cummins President of the Club who introduced Mrs. Leon T. Wilsey who had charge of the Dahlia show and to whom goes the credit for the wonderful success of the affair. The Misses Frances and Marion Wallace of Anaheim and Adolph Koch of Fullerton rendered the "Serenade" by R. Drigo and "Zallah' b'y Loraine on the plane, cello and violin.
Mrs. Estella Walker sang, "Invitation' and "'An Open Secret." Mrs. Harold Covey of Buena Park read "Fourteen" by A. Gustenberg. Clyde Roberts, baritone solo "Indian Moon" by Logan and "Good Night" by Ball. Mrs. Walker and Mr. Roberts, duet "Somewhere a Voice in Calling" by Tate Trig, "Hungarian Dance" and "Apple Blossoms," Misses Wallace and Adolph Koch, Dr. Julian Johnson had charge of the radio and gave selections during the afternoon and evening. Mr. Robertson of the Fullerton Nursery presented the club with a beautiful basket of flowers in honor of the occasion.
The program in the evening was opened by Miss Florence Schofield who sang "Carol on the Lark" and "Keep on Hoping" and was accompanied by Miss Catherine Gurley of

"For two years," Mrs. Stokes told Crowe, "my husband has been spending thousands of dollars in the underworld of Chicago in an effort to blacken me and disgrace my children. For two years he has been buying perjured affidavits from former inmates of the Everleigh club, saying that I, too, was an inmate there years ago."
The Everleigh club, in the days of Chicago's old segregated district, was a resort familiar to several continents, where debauchery was permitted only after visitors had broken through an exacting jungle of introductions, and where license clothed itself in evening dress.
"I have an affidavit from a former maid in the resort," Mrs. Stokes told Crowe, "whom Mr. Stokes engaged at a salary to act as his guide to the scattered members of the old district. A well-known character has admitted to another woman that she received $1000 for her affidavit identifying me as 'Heile Norwood,' of the club. She also approached another woman, urging her to get in on the 'easy money' by making a similar affidavit."
Home but Not Broke
There's many a man longing to return to his old home town who doesn't want to come "Back Home and Broke" as expressed in the title of Tommy Meighan's picture now playing at the United Theatre.
"Tom" returns to the old town. And he goes through all the embassment and humiliation of a man coming back a failure. The strange part of it is that he isn't a failure. You doubtless wonder why instead of going back with a big splash, he allows the home towns people to believe he has been unsuccessful. The reason is too good to spoil in the telling, and anyway, the situation must be seen to be appreciated. It provokes many spasms of laughter.
The story is an original George Ade tale, written especially for Mr. Meighan by the well known humorist, Lila Lee, many times leading woman for Wally Reid, plays opposite Mr. Meighan. She heads a strong cast.

FEARS RETURN TO PITTSBURGH PA.
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 20.—Admitted fearful of public sentiment in Pennsylvania, where he is under indictment for violation of the Mann act, "Dr." Helon B. Allen, asserted "father of 57 adopted children" and former head of a private school at Sabot, Va., today awaited removal to Pittsburgh for trial, after losing his fight here against extradition.
Allen failed in his latest effort to evade removal to the eastern city when Judge Ross of the U.S. circuit court of appeals denied his petition for a writ of habeas corpus. He will be returned, it was announced, as soon as arrangements can be completed.
"Dr." Allen was indicted in Pennsylvania for illegally transporting Miss Gladith Allen, one of his "daughters," from Virginia to Pittsburgh for alleged immoral purposes.
