QUIZ KIWANIANS ON CONSTITUTION
What Kiwanians know and don't
know about the American constitution,
was shown when President A. B.
McCord called on various members
to answer questions on the document
at the weekly luncheon.
Various scattered fines were imposed before McCrd got a man to recite the Preamble. Thomas Hunter did so.
Charles Eygabroad said there wasn't any vice president now, because Coolidge had succeeded Harding without a successor himself.
Attorney Homer Ames described the judicial department, including the federal courts.
Rev. J. A. Geissinger told how the constitution had been formed.
An invitation was accepted from George Wells of Santa Ana Kiwanian club to be the latter's luncheon guests at St. Ann's Inn Sept. 26.
Local Kiwanians will meet in a body at the City hall for the trip there.
W. J. Sieman and E. Zitzman presented a handsome American silk flag for which they were thanked warmly.
The speaker was Freeman H. Bloodgood of Santa Ana, former State Local Estate Commissioner, whose topic was "The American Constitution." The three biggest words in the English language, declared the speaker, were "We, the people," that opened the preamble to the Constitution. "Our government is a democracy with an open forum for discussion," Bloodgood quoted by way of definition.
One difference between this Republic and the Mexican was that the whole country backs the President

The speaker was Freeman R. Bloodgood of Santa Ana, former State Local Estate Commissioner, whose topic was "The American Constitution." The three biggest words in the English language, declared the speaker, were "We, the people," that opened the preamble to the Constitution. Our government is a democracy with an open forum for discussion," Bloodgood quoted by way of definition.
One difference between this Republic and the Mexican was that the whole country backs the President once he is elected, while in Mexico the people continue to support a cancello after he has been defeated.
The constitution has been in force 124 years. But before it the English people were well versed in local self-government.
At the time the constitution was adopted there were no modern facilities such as railroads, steamships, etc.
The American constitution is the oldest in the world. France, for example, has had 32 in the past century.
Likewise the American flag is the oldest in its present form in the world.
The colonists had been determined to have no more autocracy, and that accounts largely for the tenor of the document. If Jefferson hadn’t been in France at the time, the tendency away from centralization would have been greater than it is.
The best remedy for wars would be to make every government republic in form, because no real republic—the South American Republics not being such essentially—ever declared war on another, according to Bloodgood. Consequently the best essay on the way to end war, for which Edward Bok, former editor of the Ladies’ Home Journal has offered a prize of $100,000, would be one recommending the spread of democracy.
The speaker closed with an appeal to emulate the ideals and aspirations of our forefathers.
