EDITORIAL AND FEATURES An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul V. Hester Editor and Publisher DAILY. GREETINGS TO OUR READERS Lord, when we pray, "Thy kingdom come," Then fold our hands, without a care For souls whom Jesus died to save, We do but mock Thee with our prayer. —Helen G. Rice. Science Is Learning About Universe Modern science takes nothing for granted. It is searching out the hidden things in every direction—in every field of knowledge. More is known about the universe today than ever before. And ever the quest of additional knowledge goes on. The eclipse of the sun, on Monday, was put under more elaborate scrutiny by science than ever before was employed to bring forth secrets of the universe while the face of the great orb was obscured by the moon's shadow. By means of intensive observations and photographs, it may be possible to learn much about the structure of the sun and about its physical status, and how this reacts upon the earth. Japan's cataclysmal earthquake, as soon as relief is taken to that stricken people, will be studied first hand by scientists, in endeavors to determine the exact cause of these terrifying, destructive tremors. And thus science marches on, achieving triumph after triumph, and adding vastly to the sum total of human knowledge. God has written wonderously and awesomely in His universe. He permits man partially to draw back the veil and to gaze upon the marvels of His creation. The American newspaper press is one of the greatest powers for good in all the world today. Hasle and Hustle for 1924 Convention! If San Francisco is to get one of the great national conventions in 1924 it must bestir itself and California and the Pacific West must support the Bay City with zest. Already announcement comes unofficially, but with show of accuracy, that Chicago is to get the Republican national convention next year. And coupled with this is news that strenuous efforts are being made to take the Democratic national convention to St. Louis. Other cities will bid spiritedly for the honor of entertaining these big political assemblages. This is an honor worth seeking by California. San Francisco entertained the 1920 national Democratic convention with great success and credit. This was the first demonstration of the capability of a Pacific Coast city to care for a big political conclave to the satisfaction of all concerned. Delegates and visitors were delighted. California hospitality and resourcefulness, and California climate and scenery captivated them. And it was demonstrated that bringing a national convention to the Pacific Coast did not wreck the party. California should try earnestly and zealously to get one or both of the 1924 conventions. Should these efforts fail, the groundwork would be laid for getting one or both of the big assemblages in 1928. There will be traffic tragedies so long as there are grade crossings and carless drivers. History is being made in the air. It is a progressive history, the end of which no man can foresee. The United States has one distinction of which it has no reason to be proud—it leads all nations in the number and seriousness of violent crimes. Better enforcement of law is needed to counteract this. Also more thorough incultating of morals into children. Those Children of Those Children of Yours You want them to make a success in life, of course. Ask yourself if you are systematically training them along the lines that make for success. A Savings Account for each child growing as they grow, will teach them to save, and will furnish funds later on for a higher education or a start in business, Also it will establish business relations with these banks which may prove of inestimable value to them in the years to come. All the necessary ingredients of a third party are now at hand except a feed trough. Another good way to reduce to music is to do it to the music of a lawn mower. The hold-up man has his little faults, but he doesn't call it an open-door policy. With four nations beginning to hanker for it, there is some probability that Wrangel Island will yet justify its name. Some day submarines will be rendered inconvenious, and then the nations will become righteous enough to eliminate them, also. We honor the ancients too much. Alexander conquered the world, but he never did pitch a no-hit game. It may be that man was the first perfect specimen, and that monkeys were just discarded seconds. Leonard Wood shouldn't object to politics in the Islands. Where would he be except for politics? We wonder at times why the advocates of simplified spelling still use "epitaph" instead of "epitaffy." Sex equality is not yet fully established, but most of the novels contain an equal amount of sex. POEMS THAT LIVE NAMELESS PAIN In my nostrils the summer wind Blows the exquisite scent of the rose; Oh, for the golden, golden wind, Breaking the buds as it goes! Breaking the buds and bending the grass, And spilling the scent of the rose. O wind of the summer morn, Tearing the petals in twain, Wafting the fragrant soul Of the rose through valley and plain, I would you could tear my heart today And scatter its nameless pain! —Thomas Bailey Aldrich. NEW YORK LETTER By LUCY JEANNE PRICE NEW YORK, Sept. 15.—"What are these elderly people coming to? We never shall act so when we are old." That promises to be the slogan of the day before long, supplanting moans about "this awful younger generation." For the older people are striking out for "self-expression" and "the right to live their own ways" in a most alarming degree. They are running away from home! According to the Travelers' Aid Society of this city, which knows all the statistics and secrets of runaways, the number of young people and particularly young girls who run away to this big city looking for fame or romance or freedom is steadily dropping and their places are being filled by older people who get tired of sitting around for a generation or two seeing younger people have all the excitement. The milkman disguise is New York bootleggers' latest and it has been worked with considerable success, according to report. A big tray of milk bottles, with their insides painted milk white, can carry a good many quarts of real liquor inside the white paint without arousing any cause for suspicion, and even now that our officers hear it is being done, they are having difficulty in picking out the fake milkmen from the real ones. Bevillard, sole Owner Anaheim Ignition Depot Mrs. George Leitz, of Yonkers, is going to Europe on her wedding trip even if its golden wedding time before the various nations of the world straighten out her passport. Mrs. Leitz married a subject of Tripoli in 1922, when Trieste was an Austrian province. By marrying an alien she lost her American citizenship as the law permitting a married woman to keep her own citizenship rights even though married to an alien did not pass until several weeks after the wedding. Not when her husband did become a citizen a little while after that, the law had passed and consequently she was still an Austrian because a woman's citizenship under the new law did not change with her husband's. Then she went to the Austrian consul to get her passport, and was told that since Tripoli had now become Italian, she would have to seek it there. This was too much and so the Leitz family has decided to wait ninety days more or their trip, and by that time, Mrs. Leitz can once more become an American in her own name through due process of naturalization.
