Seventy-four years ago a wiry, bronzeed horsepan dashed down the street of St. Jee, mounted on a typical pony of the plains—a mount well-fitted to the hardships and speed required in dodging Indian hostiles, fording streams and maintaining a high rate of speed for mile after mile across plains and mountains. It was the start of the famous Pony Express carrying mail across 2000 miles of the Wild West. On August 31st a similar episode took place in the streets of St. Joe. This time, however, the telegraph wires had told the world of the event. Accompanying the rider and his reliefs on this strenuous battle against time was a convoy of Reo speed wagons and passenger cars under the direction of Charles H. Biglow, representing the Reo Motor Car Co. of Lansing. Biglow had already gone over the entire route from San Francisco to St. Joe in the same Reo sport phantom with which he recently broke all records between Los Angeles and Salt Lake, and Salt Lake and San Francisco. New Electrical Signs of Exide Station Up The lighting of the new signs on the Exide Service Station, which was being completed this week by the owners, Herr & Fulfer, is the final detail in one of the best-appointed shops in the city. Electrically lighted, these signs are visible for blocks. One hangs in front of the building, the others are painted on the north CHEVROLET CARS ARE SELLING FAST With six Chevrolet cars delivered in Anaheim on two days of this week, and sales running at the rate of approximately two each day for the company and its branches, the Frank P. Taggart Co. is busies than ever. Price cuts, despite many improvements on the new models, have increased the demand for the cars. HORSES READY TO SERVE MOTORISTS MIDDLEPORT. Sept. 15—"Old Dobbin" continues to be a necessary aid, despite automobiles. Along the dirt road detour between Athens and Middleport farmers are credited with keeping their horses under harness constantly so as to render prompt assistance in pulling out the luckless and ignorant motorists who venture into the muddy hills. Most of the farmers, it is said, charge reasonable prices for their work—day or night. FREE TAXI SERVICE IN CHARLESTON CHARLESTON. Sept. 15. Because a city ordinance imposes a fine for operating a taxicab not equipped with a meter, residents of this city were pleasantly surprised the other day to read an advertisement, signed by a local taxicab company offering "free taxi service" to all parts of the city. The advertisement stated that free service would continue until meters could be installed in accord with the ordinance. At the offices of the company it was said that business was fine. TULSA HOST TO OIL EXPOSITION TULSA, Ok., Sept. 15 — What is expected to be the largest gathering of oil men ever held is planned for October 8 to 14, when the first annual International Petroleum Exposition and Congress will convene in Tulsa. Arrangements for the event have been under way for months and the program for the Petroleum congress sessions October 5 and 10 will include addresses by some of the most notable figures in the industry. At these meetings there will be for the first time a frank discussion of petroleum problems by representatives of all branches of the industry Heretofore the producers, refiners and marketers have held their sectional meetings separately. The exposition phase of the fair will include historical exhibits, tracing the history of the industry from the drilling of Drake's first well in 1959 down to the present. The drilling tools used by Colonel Drake will be exhibited alongside modern drilling equipment. MOTHER RECOMMENDS COUGH REMEDY "My mother had a severe cough. I bought her a bottle of FOLEY'S HONEY AND TAR and it helped her at once. Also gave my son several doses and his cough disappeared," writes Mrs. S. L. Glvens, Greenfield, Virginia. For quick relief from Coughs, Colds, Croup, Throat, Chest and Bronchial trouble use Feley's Honey and Tar. Stood the test of time serving three generations. Largest selling cough medicine in the world. For sale by Heying's Pharmacy. FUQUAY TO BUILD BLOCK IN CYPRESS Jack Fuquay will build a cement business block in Cypress in the very near future, adjoining his garage building. Mr. Fuquay had planned to invest in Garden Grove improvement property, but realized he might better spend his money in his old home. There is much talk of opening a branch bank in the thriving city, but the residents of that locality choose a main bank, altho small, as a matter of greater convenience. CONN. KIDS MUST GET SCOOTER LICENSE HARTFORD, Conn., Sept. 15 — So numerous have gas-propelled scooters operated by children become that Connecticut motor vehicle officials are obliged to issue a warning that their operation must be limited to duly licensed motorists and the vehicles must be registered like a grown-up's auto. Hereafter the poor little rich child will need a governess clinging to the end of the scooter if it goes outside private grounds. OILMEN' INJURED Albert W. McPherson, employed by the Standard Oil Co. on the Murphy Lease at La Habra, was brot to the Anaheim sanitarium yesterday suffering from an injured hip. J. C. V. Vanderlip, local Olds distributor, in speaking of such a test made between the factory at Lansing, Mich., and Denver. A brand new stock eight was used with 655 pounds load, including passengers.
