Miscellaneous NEW COMPANIES AT TORRANCE, LOMITA In the midst of the great activity at Torrance and Lomita the chief feature of the field is the entrance to the field of new conapplies, some of them old line organizations. This past week the Bellridge Oil Co., the Consolidated Mutual and the Security Oil and Refining Co. took properties and commenced operations. The White Star Co., has located a couple of wells, one on the Whitley property and one on the Rice Ranch. Much speculation is being spent on the situation at Artesia. Opinion is divided on the condition of the Artesia Oil Co.'s well. Some firmly believe the company has an oil well, others think that the showings are just encouraging factors only. Drilling has reached a depth of 4435 and as near as can be learned nothing has been found that would cause a great deal of excitement. Nevertheless leasing is going on at fever heat and fabulous prices are being asked for prospective oil properties. The oil industry will have to wait a few days more to learn the fate of the Bellflower field. It is understood that W. M. Keck has the well at a point where something one way or another will be found out soon. Some 4360 feet of hole has been made and a test is underway on a string of 4% casing set at about 4360 feet. The core samples taken from the Calpetro well at Bellflower would lead any one to believe who knows anything about an oil well that it will make a producer. Operators are watching closely the developments of the Newport Petroleum Corporation formerly known as the Long Beach Consolidated. At 4220 the Newport Petroleum Corp. well is showing some oil and gas, and FLAT REJECTION OF GOV.'S ULTIMATUM TULSA, Okla., Sept. 14.—Flat rejection of Governor Walton's ultimatum that the sheriff, jury commission and police commissioner must resign before martial law is lifted in Tulsa-co. Indicated today that the county will remain under military rule indefinitely. The governor told the C. of C. he would withdraw troops as soon as officials he charged with being dominated by the Ku Klux Klan quit. BRIDE FORCED TO SLEEP IN BATHTUB ATLANTA, Ga., Sept. 14.—Believing that the bathtub is not the proper place for a 19 year old bride to sleep and especially in the dead of winter when the north wind is whistling through the cracks and icicles hang from the roof tops, Mrs. Helen F. O'Connor of this city, has entered a suit for divorce from her husband, Francis O'Connor charging him with cruel treatment and habitual drunkenness along with non-support. After a month of unhappiness and ill treatment the pretty brown eyed girl says that her troubles reached a climax and the chill crept into her heart and stifled the love that was there for her husband the night she was forced to sleep in the bath-tub, pillow her head on a towel and rest her shuddering body on the cold galvanized tub to escape her intoxicated husband's threats. MANY THRILLS IN UNITED OFFERING It has been a long time since a picture with so many thrills as "To Have and to Hold", playing at the United Theatre tonight and tomorrow night, has been seen in Anaheim. Betty Compson and Bert Lytell have the leading roles and there are rapler duels galore. Theodore Kosloff fights young Arthur Rankin (consist of John, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore and nephew of John Drew); Lyttell and Kosloff fight aboard a man-of-war, aboard the pirate ship and later in the court of King James I. These are real fights as Lyttell is an experienced fencer while Kosloff has won medals both in France and Russia. Lyttell fights three pirates in succession on an island. The picture is chockful of dramatic action and brimming over with romance. To top the program off is a Harold Lloyd Comedy, "Before Breakfast", and it is funny enough even to be enjoyed before the early morning meal. Al Ritchie, the man of 1,000 stunts and his girls, holds over for tonight in an entirely different act. MAY GRAFT DOG'S NERVES IN HUMAN LONDON, Sept. 14.—Dog nerves may soon be an ordinary substitute for worn-out nerves. Dr. Gosset, distinguished French surgeon, recently told British surgeons that he has taken the fresh nerve of a dog and grafted it on the ulnar nerve in a man's arm with excellent results. Sensibility was obtained in the man's arm in 148 days and the power of movement in 340 days.
