Predicts Disaster in China Sept. 26-27
SHANGHAI, Sept. 14.—Frightened Chinese in this city and vicinity are preparing to leave for the various holy mountains of China following the prediction of an old Taolst priest of one of the numerous temples on the summit and winding trail of Mount Onei, sacred mountain, that the same disaster that befell Japan will be visited upon China on Sept. 26 and 27.
“There will be general destruction of the Chinese coast on Sept. 26 and 27,” the priest warned followers of Taoism.
“Earthquakes, fires, typhoon and tidal waves will destroy coastal cities, preceded by five days of the blackest darkness.

INCOME TAX
Huntington Beach Only
Other City in Co. Indicating Greater Prosperity
With the exception of Huntington Beach, where the sudden oil development transformed conditions, Anaheim showed the largest increase in the number of individual income tax returns in 1922 as compared with 1921 of any city in Orange county.
The number increased from 1180 to 1446.
The figures of other communities were: Brea, from 390 to 412; Fullerton from 1320 to 1533; Huntington Beach from 480 to 1170; La-Habra, from 330 to 470; Orange, from 760 to 838; Santa Ana, from 2120 to 2324.
Returns in the entire county numbered 9244 against 7578 in 1921.
That the So. Calif. district will lead every other Internal Revenue Unit in the United States is evidenced by a gain of 33.6 per cent in the number of individual returns filed in the district as a whole. In 1922 only 165,338 individual returns were made while in 1923 the total number was 221,020, a record-breaking gain of 55,682. Corporation, partnership and fiduciary returns are not included in the figures given. With these added the total number of returns filed was 240,279 as against 189,840 for the same period of 1922, a gain of 50,439.
In 1922 the ratio of individual returns filed to the 1920 census population was 8.6 for the district as a whole. Applying this ratio to the number of individual returns filed would call for a population of 1,900,772 in the ten counties comprising the Sixth California District.
MUSSOLINI WILL LEAVE SEPT. 27TH
ROME, Sept. 14.—Premier Benito Mussolini, in his note to the allied ambassadorial council at Paris, has promised to begin evacuation of Corfu Sept. 27, "in the interests of European peace," it was revealed today when the text of the document was made public.
The note:
"Italy, wishing to show her constant interest in the peace of Europe, and in accordance with her previous declaration, will evacuate Corfu."
PERMITS POUR IN FOR NEW BUILDINGS
If building permits continue to pour in at the present rate the rest of the month, September's total will be $233,750, compared with a little more than $159,000 during August. Actual permits will number 90, a figure almost unprecedented.
Even tho the other three-fifths of th month, beginning today, do not hold up quite so well, there is little doubt that a considerable improvement will be shown, based upon the $93,500 in valuation represented by the 36 permits issued up to today.
Soon after the building inspector's office opened today two permits were issued, one for a $3,000 dwelling at 1012 West Broadway and one for an alteration of $125 to the dwelling at 214 South Claudina-st.
There are 15 more working days, counting Saturdays as full days, remaining during September.

ADDRESSES ROTARY ON CONSTITUTION
Showing how chaotic political conditions were before the constitution was adopted and put into practice, and how that document brought harmony, Prof. Arthur Coons of the history department of the Fullerton high school, formerly of the Anaheim high school, today gave Anaheim Lions a most interesting talk.
Pre-constitution conditions were clearly described in a letter of Washington's which the speaker read. Prof. Coons compared the chaos then with the present chaos, which he said could be ended similarly if the right body of man got together and acted.
Secretary Thomas H. Walker of the Rotary Club, who was present, extended an invitation, accepted unanimously, to attend the Rotarians' luncheon next Monday at the Elks clubhouse, when Congressman Phil Swing will speak. Kiwanians also have agreed to come. The members of all three clubs will bring their ladies.

There was nothing in the safe but papers, and these were found scattered over the house. Nothing was found missing.

DARWIN NOT SCIENTIFIC, SAYS BRYAN
Hon. Wm. Jennings Bryan, after introduction by State Senator Lewis delivered a great lecture in the splendid auditorium of the Anaheim Union High school before a fine audience yesterday afternoon.
His subject was "Did Evolution or God Make Man."
If Mr. Bryan is not a great orator people understand him and get the ideas he wishes to convey which to him is vastly more important than to be famed for eloquence. Mr. Bryan is making a great fight for the old fundamentals, namely belief in God and the Bible, in the virgin birth of Christ who died and rose again for the world's salvation.
Many who call themselves Scientists with some divines of the various churches and college professors are arraying themselves against these old truths in their efforts to support the theory of Darwin's Evolution. True science is classified knowledge. Nothing is scientific that is not truth. I do not combat with" says Mr. Bryan. "No scientific fact ever hurt religion." All truth is from God. Science may develop that truth but it does not evolve it. Science may harness the mountain stream or the electricity of the air and make them great sources of power. It does not evolve that power. It only develops it.
Science needs the water and the lightning to do this. Science must be based on facts, not hypothesis. It is not a system of guesses but of truths that existed before science discovered them.

POLO GROUNDS, NEW YORK, Sept. 14.—Order was restored by the police early this afternoon in the disturbance among a crowd estimated at 20,000 who lined the ball park for several blocks to purchase $3.30 seats for the Firpo-Dempsey bout.
Many persons were slightly injured when police charged the crowd to quell the disturbance.
Their injuries were not serious enough to require their being taken to hospitals.
The sale of tickets was temporarily halted until the crowd became less fractious.
Another ticket wagon, selling $16.50 tickets was spied by the crowd on 155th-st, around the corner from Eighth-ave., a mob of 3,000 menaced the wagon and the mounted police again charged the crowd and ordered the sale of tickets stopped.
"Tex" Rickard, promoter of the contest came along at this moment, hurried to the steps of the ticket wagon and exhorted police to form the mob in line so the ticket sale could proceed. Rickard was hooted and jeered by the throng.
Mrs. Robert Zinzer, the first woman in line for the $3.30 seats, was jolted out of her position when the crowd become unruly. As a result she failed to buy a ticket aloft waiting patiently since 8 o'clock this morning.
Elevated, subways, surface cars, automobiles and wagons began to disgorge thousands who clustered in line on Eighth-ave., for blocks one woman, Mrs. Robert Zinzer, headed the line. She had waited patiently since 8 o'clock this morning for the ticket sale to start. When the impatient crowd began to surge forward, Mrs. Zinzer was thrown out of position but mounted police managed to rescue her from the maelstrom and placed her at the head of the line again.
Even while the rioting was in progress, hundreds of late comers began to arrive for the admission seats. The vaduct above Eighth-ave., was lined with people waiting to go down the stairs of the ticket booths.

No scientific fact ever hurt religion." All truth is from God.
"Evolution rests only on hypothesis or guesses and never on a single certified fast or truth. The plant growing from the seed is not being evolved from the seed but developed. The chicken is not evolved from the egg, it is simply developed.
The telephone or the automobile were not evolved, they were developed by human intelligence.
People think they are believing in "Evolution" when they are only believing development.
Darwin's doctrine of the survival of the fittest is the most cruel the world has ever known. "That is the doctrine of "might makes right." It has meant wars, oppression, the rule of the strong over the weak. And Darwin's two basic laws, to-wit:
1. National selection.
2. Sex selection is discarded by most scientists.
It is impossible in our limited space to give even a fair idea of Mr. Bryan's great and convincing arguments used by him against the fallacies advanced in support of evolution. The loss of belief by Germany in the fundamentals of truth wrecked that empire. Mr. Bryan is simply sounding the alarm that our nation is heading in the same direction. He is using his great abilities to save us from such a fate.
