SIGNAL HILL HAS ANOTHER BIG WEEK
By Ellwood J. Munger
The past week was one of the biggest for the month just closed for the production of Signal Hill and the bringing in of new producers. About a half dozen wells were completed, the completions running from 1500 barrels to 8000 barrels.
The biggest oil producer reported from Signal Hill for some time is the 8000 barrel well just completed by the Black Diamond Oil Company. The big well, the first one for the company was finished at 5000 feet and started off with an initial production of 5000 barrels. The production registers 30 gravity, making the well one of the nicest big wells the Hill has produced.
Joseph Dabney continues to have his usual run of good luck in the bringing in of oil wells at Long Beach. Dabney has just placed No. 11 on production at a depth of 4889 and the well is making 24 gravity oil. No. 21 completed at 5280 is making only about 600 barrels.
The de Lendreeie Oil Syndicate of which J. W. Henderson of the Henderson Petroleum Syndicate is trustee completed a 2000 barrel well on the Garrett property. Garrett No. 2 was finished at 4959. The well is doing exceptionally good when it is taken into consideration that 450 feet of drill pipe was left in the hole when it went on production.
The Garnett Oil Co. and the Graham-Loftus Oil Co.'s are two of the smaller concerns that got nice wells at Signal Hill the past week. The Garnet Oil Co. completed No. 1 at 3980 and got a 1500 barrel producer. The Graham-Loftus Oil Company put Lightburn No. 2 on production at 5180 and realized a 2000 barrel well.
DEMAND MELONS AS PAY FOR BOOKS
PARIS, Sept. 13.-The melon is the chef-d'oeuvre of the Summer, once wrote the famous Alexander Dumas who thought there was nothing better in France than a melon of Cavillon. The story runs that one day a municipal counsellor from this village came to the writer with the request for several of his books for the library of Cavillon.
"Certainly", Dumas replied, "I will send you a copy of each one of my 500 volumes but in return I demand a yearly income of twelve melons from Cavillon.
In France the melon is most generally served at the beginning of the meal as hors d'oeuvr or after the soup. It is served on a plate surrounded with chopped ice. Most of the Frenchmen prefer sugar to salt. Only a few take dessert.
The thrifty French housewife saves the rind of a melon for jam. She uses the thickest ones. Peel the rind and cut in small pieces. For a pound of this use an equal amount of sugar.
Melt the sugar with a tiny bit of water and add the rind with a bit of lemon, let cook about two hours until the mixture has the appearance of jelly. Put into jars and let stand three or four days before covering with paper.
HUNTINGTON BEACH PASSES QUIET WEEK
Huntington Beach passed a comparative quiet week. Three new producers, all small wells furnished the field's only interest. The Federal Drilling Co. led the field with a 500 barrel well on the Woolner lease. Woolner 1 was completed at 4875 and the new well is producing 26 gargy oil.

The General Petroleum is about to give the production of Signal Hill a big upward boost. The G. P. has three wells finishing up in the deep vault that will undoubtedly make better than 5000 a piece. The wells are Bixby 2 rounding into shape at 4500 feet. Clock 3 being completed at 4919, and K. & H. 2A at 5500 feet. Clock 1 at 5972 is still held up with a little finishing job and the world record deep well will be delayed on production for a few days.
One of the big wells for the Shell Co. on the Alamitos property was completed at No. 6. Drilled to 5250 Alamitos 6 came in at close to 3000 barrels.
The Superior Oil Co. broke all production records for the week at Long Beach with a 7000 barrel well on the Crew property. The Crew lease was formerly one of the holdings of the Sandburg Petroleum Co. Crew 2A was completed at 3206 feet and is making 28 gravity oil. The 7000 barrels is the estimated initial production.
DAIRY PRODUCTION RECORDS INCREASE
In comparing the production records for the month of August as against that of a year ago, the average production of the cows in the Cow testing Association is ranging upward. A year ago there were 679 cows in the association producing 578,455 pounds of milk and 23,354.2 pounds of butterfat. The average milk production was 853 lbs. and 34.4 pounds of butterfat per cow. In connection there were 198 cows producing over 40 pounds of butterfat.
This year 970 cows are being tested by the dairy department of the Orange County Farm Bureau; these cows producing 854,225 pounds of milk and 33,928.7 pounds of butterfat. The average milk production is 881 pounds and 35 pounds of butterfat per cow. 294 cows produced over 40 pounds of butterfat, these cows producing 1.3 pounds of butterfat a day.

AKRON, Sept. 13.—There are many ups and downs in the life of HUNTINGTON BEACH PASSES QUIET WEEK
Huntington Beach passed a comparative quiet week. Three new producers, all small wells furnished the field's only interest. The Federal Drilling Co. led the field with a 500 barrel well on the Woolner lease. Woolner 1 was completed at 4975 and the new well is producing 26 gargy oil.
The Jameson Oil Co. came next with a 400 barrel well on the Block B property. The Jameson producer was completed at 4895 and is making 21 gravity oil.
The Shell Co. has Slayter No. 2 on production doing about 150 barrels. Shell Slayter 1 is 4969 feet deep and producing 21 gravity oil.
The average daily production of the Huntington Beach field hovers around the 100,000 mark. It seems that Huntington Beach has reached the peak of production and that future developments will probably not any more than maintain the present output.
Compton is now the newly recognized oil field of So. Calif., and must be moved up from the wildcat lists to the proven fields of So. Calif. To the Union Oil Co. of Calif., goes the honor of discovering this new field. Compton makes the third oil field the Union Oil Co. has presented to So. Calif. The other two fields discovered by the Union Oil Co. are Santa Fe Springs and Richfield. The Compton well on the Calender property came in a 100 barrel producer at a depth of 4068 feet. The gravity 32.4 is regarded as exceptionally good, especially for the top sand production. Should Compton prove up like the other fields of the Southland with a deep sand, the field will undoubtedly be one of the greatest in the state for capacity and high gravity of producers.
Montebello anxiously awaits the drilling out of the cement and testing out of the Bicknell well by H. L. Whiston. Drilling was stopped at 4425 with some $80 feet of sand in the hole. If this $80 feet of sand carried oil in commercial quantity the well should make good. The Whiston well will extend the western limit of the Montebello for about a mile.
Richfield is on the verge of staging a come back. The Union Oil Co. Graham-Loftus No. 53 is, it is understood is the basis for the revival of excitement in the old field. Graham-Loftus 53 at 4245 has shown sufficient oil and gas to warrant the prediction of something good. Leasing in the old district has been greatly stimulated by the showings of the Union's well, and many changes in property ownership has been noted in the past few weeks.

ELEVATOR GIRL FIBS; DIVORCE DENIED
AKRON, Sept. 13.—There are many ups and downs in the life of an elevator girl, but it doesn't pay any of them to tell fibs in court, as gay Kathleen Horne confessed she did before Judge H. C. Spicer.
Gay Kathleen, 27, seeking a divorce, told the judge she had no other man, was keeping company with no other man, and had no idea of being wedded again if divorced.
Her husband present in court as a spectator, spoke up and told the court that his wife was not telling the truth. Finally after severe cross-examination the woman admitted writing a love letter to another man.
The judge fined her $10 for contempt of court and refused to grant the divorce.
BLUNDER CORRECTED
This man has placed his desk so that his back is to the door. This makes an uninviting impression on the caller and makes it inconvenient for the man to turn to greet him. If he were facing the door, as could greet his caller with a nod if he could not at once take his attention from his work.
Indoor moisture depends upon temperature, and the well being of indoor man depends upon indoor moisture.
