LUIS INSISES ON OWN LINE OF WORK By DAVIS J. WALSH (I. N. S. Sports Editor) ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., Sept. 7. "Fight hard, spare no effort; your countrymen are watching and praying for you." The above is a free translation of instructions received by Luis Firpo today via cable from Felix Bunge, the correspondence course trainer in Buenos Aires. When the challenger digested the contents of the message, he shrugged an eloquent shoulder and dismissed the matter forthwith. There was nothing else to do with it. Firpo is following his own ideas of conditioning and everyone is dissatisfied with them, with the possible exception of the gentleman himself. One of his sparring partners, whose identity is withheld for obvious reasons, had this to say today in connection with the fight. All that Dumpsey needs to do is to keep shifting to his right and Firpo will never hit him. Luis places all his reliance in his right hand but Gene Larue, flyweight champion of Canada and Kid Pancho ended their scheduled 12-round fight in San Antonio in the fourth round by a double knockout. The fight was taking place in an open arena and the heavens were weeping. A drizzling rain had drenched both the fighters and spectators during the first three rounds. Both fighters rushed from their corners bent on ending the fight. Larue put his all into a left that landed on Pancho's jaw, at the same instant Pancho brought up his right with all his force which landed on Larue's chin. Both were counted out. Years ago Ad Wolgast and Joe Rivers came near ending a championship fight in the old Naud Junction Arena in the same manner. The referee helped Ad to his feet and held him up while he counted Rivers out. That was as near as Joe Rivers, the greatest of Mexican boxers, ever came to a championship. The postponement of the Dundee-Leonard fight is stirring up some interest among the fans. Dundee is making a great adoo over the affair. He claims he will claim the Leonard forfeit of $5000 and if Benny Leonard does not show up and weigh in at the required weight of 135 pounds Dundee will claim the lightweight world's championship. All of this properly steamed up will perhaps pack a house for some future date. Great stuff and the dear public will fall for it. ged an eloquent shoulder and dismissed the matter forthwith. All that Dempsey needs to do is to keep shifting to his right and Firpo will never hit him., Luis places all his reliance in his right hand but he cannot land it if Dempsey steps to the right and at the same time leads with a left hook. Everyone is agreed that Firpo has been a fisticite monte bank in his training bouts here. However, he may have something up his sleeve besides the hair on his elbow. He has been indulging in secret morning workouts in the garage near his Chelsea cottage and merely buffoons in the afternoon for the benefit of the innocents, it is said. In short, he will be mysterious to the end. FEAR FOR SAFETY OF TWO RACING YACHTS LOS ANGELES, Sept. 7. — Grave fears were entertained here in yachting circles today as reports were received from Santa Barbara that the Viking IV, and Spindrift, two yachts entered in the Santa Barbara-Honolulu yacht race are now two weeks overdue. The two boats left Honolulu August 8. Two other entrants in the race, the Mariner and Diablo, returned to the mainland about 20 days later. The Spindrift should have arrived two or three days behind the two. The Viking IV was due back August 29. The Viking IV was last heard from when the Diablo passed it on the return trip from Honolulu. TEAMS WORKING TO WIN GAME Ray Ortiz, manager of the Richfield Spanish team announces that Dominic Chandes is working out this week and that his arm is in wonderful condition. There is a smile of satisfaction on the manager's face when he sees Chandes hurl the shot bullets to the tiger catcher. The five acre team is being put into shape and the Richfield players are ready for the Santa Rita team No. 2. During the same time Santa Rita team No. 1 is playing at Plaentina. A big crowd is expected from Yorba, Olinda, Peralta and Richfield. The following line-up has been announced: Joe; c; Bolsserance, 1b; Chandes, 1b; D. Chandles, p; Garcia, lf; Conde, cf; Peter, rf; Leon Postponement of the Dundee-Leonard fight is stirring up some interest among the fans. Dundee is making a great adoo over the affair. Luis Angel Firpo does not have to spend his money on clothes and being a good sport to get into the papers. He has enough peculiarities to keep the scribes hammering away each day. The latest is that the Argentine strong boy is training some hours each day in secret. He also enjoys nibbling at raw meat and uses the soft side of the floor to sleep on. He is so tough that he can sleep on a board all night and then take his morning dip in water afloat with cracked ice. Luis Angel lives more nearly the simple life of our ancient ancestors who fought with their hands and depended on strength. Luis Angel must reach back into the primitive for his nature. He is plain, self-dependent, severe even cruel in his dealings with adversary's but kind and good natured with his friends. Luis Angel lives the life of a fighter of might but not the civilized man of science. The coming fight looks to be a contest of might with science. Joe Patrick has acquired a controlling interest in the Los Angeles club by purchasing the stock held by William Veak of the Cubs. Mr. Veak thought that the Angels did not deal with the Cubs as they should, Mr. Patrick figured the Cubs wanted the L.A. graddates at a bargain. Mr. Patrick will now be enabled to put his youngsters on the open market. Bill Esseck will handle the combination of Angels and Tigers that will entertain the Cincinnati Reds. The lineup will be as follows: Griggs and Rod Murphy 1st; Jimmy McAuley, short; Red Smith, 3rd; Krug, 2nd; Hood, if; Chet Chadbourne cf; Trombly, rf; with Pete Schneider utility. Harry Hannah catcher, May, Crandall, Wallace, Shellenback and Tom Hughes pitchers. The famous shift which Julia Barashkova in a favorite pose. Julia Barashkova, noted artistic Russian dancer, recently arrived on her first trip to America. Before sailing for the United States she danced in Shanghai for three years and created a sensation there. DEMPSEY PRACTICES "REFINED" SLUGGING WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, N.Y., Sept. 7. The famous shift which made Jack Dempsey a world's champion and which he discarded a brace of years ago so that he might become a nice, refined boxer, is visibly present again. Dempsey's natural style is to crouch well toward his right side. But when he decides to use his shift, he straightens up slightly, makes a bluff with his left, bluffs with a right and then drives in with the left. Sometimes he varies it by bluffing with his left and then shooting his right. Against Farmer Lodge he faked a left, then faked a right, faked another left and then landed with his right, going thru the whole ceremony so quickly that the eye hardly could follow his movements. The very fact that Dempsey is resorting again to the shift seems to be a "tip off" that when he tackles Luis Firpo he will toss all his boxing skill to the four winds and do what he used to do in the days before he decided to achieve scientific greatness. Without a doubt he will step right into Firpo and make it a sluggish match with the tap of the first gong. Dempsey has been doing little else during this week than swing left hooks. Apparently that will be his main method of attack against Firpo and he is achieving marksmanship with it. He has been landing with greater regularity and greater power than he has been putting into the punch heretofore. "This Firpo seems to be a little different type of fighter than I have met heretofore, so I am doing special training for him," said Dempsey. NAMED VIRGINIA FOR BASKETBALL GIRLS DEFIANCE, Ohio., Sept. 7.—Sons in most any town may be named after the President of the United States, but to Defiance falls the distinction of possessing proud parents whose daughter was christened from three basketball players, all having the name of Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Earl L. Mauck, ardent basketball fans, have named their baby Virginia May, honoring Misses Virginia Lambert, Virginia Harley and Virginia Lawson, all members of the local high school basketball team. WRONGLY ACCUSED; MAY BE PARDONED LOS ANGELES, Sept. 7.—Confessing that she testified falsely against James A. Chamberlain, former wealthy minister of Pomona, and thereby caused him to be sent to the penitentiary at San Quentin for a term of one year to life on a statutory charge. Edna Chamberlain, 23-year-old adopted daughter of the minister, today started proceedings to obtain a pardon from Governor Friend W. Richardson for the man she had wronged. POORLY-PAID GIRL HAS REAL BATTLE DES MOINES, Ia., Sept. 7.—The economic struggle of the "poor but honest working girl" are real as life in their desperation, according to the records of social workers here. The fight to exist decently on a wage of $15 to $20 weekly—often with a wage of $10 only—is no mean job. As the current rents charged will show. Mrs. J. G. McKinn, matron of the Des Moines Business Women's Home, declares average earnings of her roomers are $70 a month. A half share in a room with three meals a day may be had at the home for $5 weekly, and there is a long waiting list seeking admission. If a girl earns nearly $100 a month she is asked to live with a private family at higher rent, so that another working girl earning less may move in. The girls can do their own washing and ironing at a small extra charge. The Y. W. C. A. is crowded with girls earning an average salary of $80 monthly, Mrs. L. H. Ingrahm, employment secretary, stated. "Unless a girl is living at home we do not send her to apply for positions in laundries, restaurants and other places paying $10 and $12 weekly." Mrs. Ingrahm declared. "It is impossible for any woman to live decently on that pay unless she has other help."
