CONTOUR OF JAPAN
UNDERGOES CHANGE;
MANY ISLANDS SINK
KOBE, Sept. 7.—Gigantic tidal waves and powerful convulsions of the sea bottom have played havoc with the seacoast of eastern Japan, reports state, and the tidewater contour hundreds of miles gives the impressions of a new island risen from the ocean.
Many islands off the Japanese mainland are reported to have disappeared and scores of coast towns have been washed away to eternity by destructive tidal wave disturbances and similar terrific backwash phenomena of the sea.
In the earthquake zone two hundred and sixty-eight heavy shocks are said have been felt within the twenty-four hours following the horrible first vibration that brought hundreds of thousands of buildings to the ground with appalling loss of life.
The Japanese government is taking energetic measures to maintain a semblance of order throughout the horrible chaos. Strict marital law continues to be enforced and orders have been given to shoot looters and vandals.
Food riots which were said to have started around relief depots in Tokio and Yokohama, have been sternly suppressed by the military and today no further disasters of this nature are feared, according to the advises here.

NAME COMMITTEES
FOR HARBOR FINANCE
In a communication in regard to
the Orange County harbor, T. B. Talbert says, "I have read in the Los
Angeles papers of the appointment of
several committees including 200 persons in the various sections of that
city with the view of financing engineering data in regard to construction and future development of Los
Angeles harbor. If so, it would be
wise for Orange-co. to take similar
action. It is our intention to take
the matter up with the supervisora
at the meeting Tuesday and appoint
committees from the supervisorial
district, to collect engineering data
in reference to the harbor, of fae
work which has already been done
and what could be done with money
from a bond issue. Other matters
while will arrange favorable sentiment in regard to the proposed harbor improvements will be discussed
at the supervisors meeting."

Koumyss
W. E. Allen
California Biological Feature Service
Not long ago I was present at an interesting conversation between Dr. F. B. Summer of the La Jolla Biological Station and Dr. I. C. Hall of the Department of Bacteriology of the University of California. Dr. Summer was asking Dr. Hall about the present opinion of specialists as to the food and medicinal values of soured milks. And both made some general remarks concerning Metchnickoff's theories as to prolongation of life.
So recently that it is easily within the memory of many of us, a prominent fad in diet was use of Bulgarian sour milk called koumyss. For this fad the famous Russian scientist, Metchnikoff was almost entirely responsible because he insisted in books and speeches that he had found in kouywss a peculiar species of bacteria which either destroyed or restricted certain poisons in the human intestine to such an extent that disease could be avoided and life prolonged. He called attention to the alleged long life of Bulgarian peasants subsisting upon koumyss, but he especially emphasized the point that after feeding koumyss he found a great increase of the Bulgarian bacteria in the human intestine. At any rate, his influence was so great that he started the fad.
Dr. Hall says that improved methods of study have shown that the human intestine normally harbors a bacteria which is extremely difficult to distinguish from the koumyss kind, and that Metchnikoff undoubtedly got the two confused. But he also says that koumyss is a food which favors the growth of this particular type of resident bacteria and that it really does have some marked good effects. Unfortunately for the koumyss or any other sour milk theory, these same results are as well obtained by using sweet milk for a food. That is to say, the most recent experiments indicate that one who wishes to get the benefits of a milk diet can get it through either sweet milk or certain kinds of sour milk, according to his taste.
In further discussion of koumyss Dr. Hall said that there was a considerable disadvantage in the fact that koumyss bacteria were not very hardy and that they required con-

FULLERTON R. C. FUND
NEARING GOAL
The American Red Cross campaign in Fullerton for relief of Japanese earthquake sufferers is meeting a hearty response. The Red Cross will raise five million dollars for relief work, and Fullerton's quota is $175, which will be subscribed within a few days. Officers in charge of the work are: S. A. Salveson, chairman; Mrs. E. T. Fuller, secretary; and Mrs. Q. B. Evans, chairman of civilian relief.
It is said that the great need in the earthquake section is for medical supplies to prevent the spreading of plagues.
ROCK FORMATION
OCCASIONS DELAY
Grinding away at one bunch of rocks after another of sandstone formation, the Community well on the William Wagner, Jr., ranch a mile east of Placentia-ave and Olive-rd, had perforated this morning only 35 feet in the past 24 hours. This brings the depth to around 610 feet.
Repeatedly the string of drill pipe has had to be drawn out of the hole, the individual pieces unscrewed and new bits put on. Sometimes only half a foot of progress would be made or only three feet before bits had to be changed.
Rocks sometimes are a good sign is the talk about the well, and they are a good sign now because their presence means that the desirable formation, similar to that of wells on the Kraemer lease at Placentia, is still in evidence.
Interest in the well naturally is less keen on the part of ranchers, now that the three crews have settled down to the steady, monotonous grind day after day, with no new features to indicate what is going to happen eventually.
The Standard is performing its work in its usual thorough manner and delays are being cut to a minimum.
GAMBLING SYSTEM
UNDER FIRE IN ARIZ
PHOENIX, Ariz., Sept. 7.—A determined fight is being waged in Phoenix by local citizens against the alleged attempt of the Ku Glux Klan to prevent the extension of the Pari-mutual system of betting to cover the horse races to be given under auspices of the County fair here.
McCord Harrison head of the klan in Arizona, claims that Pari-mutual betting is in violation of Arizona law.
In further discussion of koumyss Dr. Hall said that there was a considerable disadvantage in the fact that koumyss bacteria were not very hardy and that they required considerable care in cultivation. In California certain Portugese and Italian families propagate a cauliflower like growth in milk, which consists of several forms of acid producing bacteria together with a yeast that produce a fermented product of delightful flavor.
But, for these who do not like the sour milk there is much reason for satisfaction in the assurance that by drinking sweet milk we can get just as good dietetic results as are obtainable by using the sour milk.

In answer to this, the fair commission maintains that the Pari-mutual system has been upheld by the supreme court of the United States in test cases, and that in addition the system has been legalized in 12 states.
