Three 'mums
(Continued From Page One)
W. E. ALLEN
California Biological Feature Service
A few days ago Dr. James H. McCurdy, the eminent authority on physical education, paid a flying visit to the La Jolla Biological Station.
In the course of a conversation he mentioned the fact that one of his students had done experimental study of white rat apparently similar to some studies by Dr. Slonaker of Stanford University which showed that there were very pronounced differences in the effects of muscular exercises according to the amount taken. Too much was also injurious. But there was an intermediate amount which was not beneficial.
The most beneficial amount of anything is often called the optimum The least amount which can be taken without injury may be called the minimum (in some cases minimum means the least which can be taken without death or destruction). Similarly the greatest amount which can be taken without injury may be called maximum.
Optimum corresponds to what a great many people call the golden mean. It is a more accurate term, however, because of the most favorable results do not always come from a point half way between extremely little and extremely much. One who seeks success in living or in any line of human endeavor will find it worth while to give serious attention to these three mums, particularly to the optimism with a view to avoiding the extremes no less than to take advantage of the better or best. In fact, the severest test of boasted human intelligence lies in the application of choice when confronted with a full range of conditions from minimum to maximum.
Before passing harsh judgment
BUMPER CROPS AS RESULT OF WEATHER
SACRAMENTO, Sept. 1. California is assured a bumper crop this season as a result of the favorable weather conditions that have prevailed throughout the state for the last two weeks, according to a prediction made by Director G. H. Hecke of the State Department of Agriculture, which is based on data compiled by E. D. Kaufman, agricultural statistician of the California Co operative Crop Reporting Service.
Hecke declared that harvesting of the grain crops is progressing rapidly, 50 per cent of the wheat crop and 70 per cent of the barley yield being in the sack.
Comparatively speaking, temperature this Spring have been abnormally low, and instead of retarding the maturing of fruits, as expected, the opposite effect has been produced shipments are that up to and including July 11, ever 6,300 cars of peaches, plums, cherries, plums, cherries, apricots, pears and grapes have been shipped, compared to slightly over 2,100 cars at this date last year.

neglect of sufficient and proper exercise, the main emphasis with trees being placed upon their duty to encourage the few still more desperate effort at muscular strain, lop sided development and warped judgment. Before passing harsh judgment upon the usual failures of human intelligence when attempting such choices it is only fair to say that the matter is generally deeply complicated by the fact that individual and racial welfare demands now and then some approach toward the extremes in order to stimulate effective use of the optimum. Also, there is further complications in the fact that extremes and optima differ for both races and individuals and for individuals according to age, vigor and conditions of existence.
All of these things are well illustrated in the field of muscular exercise. The amount of muscular effort which keeps one man fit is too much for another and too little for a third. That which was helpful at the age of twenty is depressing andurdensome or even dangerous at sixty. An amount which is injurious to a sedentary worker is all right for a typical longshoresman of a farmer.
It might reasonably be expected that portion of the population which gives most attention to intellectual matters should show notable ability in identifying and choosing optima. So far muscular exercise is concerned this is distinctly not true. In all of our educational institutions a limited number of young people are encouraged and often driven to maximum muscular effort in total disregard of their optima and in defiance of the obligation of our schools to teach young people how to recognize and select optima or to at least avoid dangerous approach to either mixima or minima.
On the other hand, the larger number of young people are at the same time encouraged or driven to

neglect of sufficient and proper exercise, the main emphasis with me-being placed upon their duty to encourage the few still more desperate effort at muscular strain, lop sided development and warped judgment. While, today, most schools make some pretense of showing that an individual may take too little exercise few, if any, show that he can take too much, and very few teach him to avoid risky extremes and to select his own optimum.
Indeed, though some educators are accustomed to speak rather patronizingly of brawn, personifying people who do muscular labor as distinguished from brain, it appears that in this line at least brawn shows greater intelligence inasmuch as it calculates the effect of various types of muscular work for so many hours per day and insists that the maximum should be avoided at the same time that the optimum is approached as nearly as possible.
The fact of the matter is that educational institutions exploit or permit interested parties to exploit, the brawn of their students just as persistently and heartlessly as it is claimed by labor leaders that capitalists exploit their workmen. The interests involved are sufficiently powerful to override intelligence and choice of optimum and to dictate the choice of maxima for the few and minimus for the many.
Nor is there anything extraordinary in this situation. Amongst all human kind there is little practical search for optimum conditions of any sort. Those who seek the best are-prone to mistake the maximum for the best. In the main, activity of every type occurs only in response to internal impulse or outside compulsion and it stops only with less of the propelling influence or with the approach of exhaustion or destruction. With all of his intelligence there is little evidence that man, as a group of living things, is more successful than other animals in finding and clinging to the optimum.
