PASTEBOARD BOXES CONTAIN FLASKS They are making nice pasteboard boxes now to contain the half pint flasks. Santa Ana Officers Parker, Yoder and Elliott at 1:15 o'clock this morning arrested Sam King and captured one of the boxes containing 16 flasks and eight vacancies. Sam will be charged with possession and transportation, the case probably coming before City Recorder W.F. Heathman this afternoon. King is an oil worker of Long Beach and alleges he had spent only one day in the county, out of his 14 years in the state. He was driving thru the business section of the city at the time. He looks like a professional bootlegger, but the evidence to prove it hasn't been obtained. BOATWRIGHT GUILTY LOS ANGELES, Aug. 31.—Thurman Boatwright, slayer of Felix Beasley, was found guilty of murder in the first degree this afternoon by a jury which tried him in superior Judge Reeve's court. The jury recommended life imprisonment. Boatwright, following the slaying, told deputy sheriffs who investigated that Beasley had been killed by a bandit who held up Beasley, Boatwright and Boatwright's wife in Beasley's automobile. TILDEN WINS MATCH FOREST HILLS, N.Y., Aug. 31.—William T. Tilden, the American tennis champion gave the U.S. an even break in the opening play of the Davis cup matches with the Australian team today, when he beat John B Hawkes in straight sets, 6-4, 0-2, 6-1. PRATERNITY CONVENTION SACRAMENTO, Aug. 31.—Hundreds of delegates were in attendance today at the opening of the 21st annual convention of the Pi Delta Kappa national fraternity. Delegations from Los Angeles, Kansas City and St. Louis are waging a spirited fight for the 1924 convention. City Briefs Victor Kohler was not the driver of the car of Phil Harmudy which went over the curb and into the door at the Knott's Meat Market recently, according to his mother. The announcement that he was the driver of the car was made by a companion of Kohler's who now says he did it "just for fun." Mrs. Mildred Powell of the city building inspection department, leaves Monday for a vacation at Julian, 60 miles back of San Diego. At 10:45 a.m. the big bit was eating thru the gravel and sandstone at a depth of 120 feet. The 22-inch casing will be put in for a depth not yet determined and after that 15-inch casing will be used. Reports that the material encountered was like that in wells of the Kraemer lease, Placentia, were confirmed today. "Exactly the same formation," was the word that went out. Some trouble is being experienced with water, however, which was not true in the Placentia field. This can only hinder the three crews, however. More mud is required to provide resistance to the bit. A big calf wheel was put in today. All of the machinery and casing is on hand now. Ranchers interested are confident that oil will be struck at around 4,000 feet. Taking the "obey" out of the love, honor and obey combination may be all right; but it might be well to retain the honor. Harlan Knight as Rev. Alexander Murray in "The Man from Glengarry." LIONS HEAR ABOUT ECLIPSE OF SUN Prof. Edgar Lucien Larkin, director of Mt. Lowe Observatory, spoke before the Anaheim Lions today at their weekly luncheon in the Elks' clubhouse on the eclipse of the sun. The address was highly instructive and humorous. References to the influence upon civilization of the progress in knowledge of astronomy were a feature. If he had told any body 200 years ago the name by which the world now is know by among astronomers he would have been burned at the stake, he declared. The name is "Next to Nothing." Discussing the Einstein theory of relativity, Prof. Larkin declared that he didn't know any more about it after he began to study it than before. He doesn't accept it apparently. "I have a million opinions for a nickel apiece," he said, referring to his popular newspaper articles. He was born in 1847, making him the oldest astronomer of note living. Clifford Grua of the legal department of the Auto Club of So. Cal. spoke on the provisions of the Breed bill which take effect tomorrow. D. H. Smith, president of the Standard Bank expects to leave Sunday for a trip to Liberty, Saskatchewan, Canada. SAM SEELIG CO.
